Bottom Line

This mid-range hotel is located on a winding road high above the Mediterranean. The 146 guest rooms are simple and clean, but the decor is slightly dated. Spectacular gardens cover the grounds, with lush plants, flowers, and trees at every turn. The hotel has a large outdoor pool, complete with a whirlpool and bar. There is also a large indoor bar with generous seating. The hotel also has three restaurants -- one is indoors and the two others are on outdoor patios. Downsides include lack of a fitness center and fees for Wi-Fi and parking. Though there is an elevator, some guests may have trouble with the many stairs found throughout the property.

Scene

Bright, welcoming decor with gorgeous gardens and several outdoor terraces

The lobby is elegant with tasteful, bright decor. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in a ton of natural light, and the yellow and green loveseats and blue rugs provide a cheerful, welcoming atmosphere. Orchids cover the various coffee tables, and intricately patterned cafe-style tables and vases have been placed around the room. Terra-cotta flooring changes to glossy marble with a red and green pattern near the entrance, and a dramatic chandelier hangs overhead. The lobby leads to a small outdoor terrace that offers a fantastic view of the Mediterranean. There's a gorgeous garden filled with lush trees and flowers, beautiful stone walls, and patios, which make for a private, secluded setting.

Location

Elevated above Taormina on a winding road that's close to the main town

Located on a steep, winding street, the hotel is elevated and surrounded by lush gardens, with a stunning view of the Mediteranean and mountains. It's in a quiet area with many hotels nearby, and not far from the town center. Here are some approximate distances to popular sights:

  • 25-minute drive to Taormina Archaeological Museum
  • 10-minute drive to Badia Vecchia
  • 15-minute drive to Saraceno Castle
  • Five-minute drive to Cathedral of Taormina
  • 15-minute walk to Church of San Domenico
  • An hour's drive to Taormina Roman Odeon
  • Five-minute walk to the Museum of Art and Popular Traditions
  • Eight-minute walk to Greek Theater
  • 30-minute drive to Giardini Naxos Beach
  • An hour's drive to Catania Fontanarossa Airport

Rooms

Clean, simple rooms with dated decor

Guests enter the hotel from the fifth or sixth floor and use the elevator to reach the simple, small rooms that are less upscale than the rest of the hotel. They are bit dated, with an '80s flair -- white tiled floors, dark wood and turquoise accents, mirrored closets, and white leather armchairs and stools. Some have balconies and sea views. The beds are two twin-size beds pushed together, with a large wood headboard with two built-in shelves on either side. All the rooms have small flat screen TVs, coffee- and tea-making facilities, mini-fridges, and safes. Guests are given a free bowl of fruit and a bottle of sparkling wine when they check in. The bathrooms are bland and functional, with light-blue tiled floors and walls, small sinks with soap dispensers, glass enclosed showers, bidets, and basic toiletries. A towel warmer is a nice touch. Note that there is a charge for Wi-Fi.

Features

Beautiful gardens, large pool, three restaurants, two bars, and parking

The beautiful, lush greenery that covers the grounds gives a feeling of privacy and a touch of romance. There are many outdoor terraces where guests can relax while taking in the views of the bay and the surrounding area. The large, curved swimming pool is surrounded by tons of lounge chairs, a covered whirlpool, and a small bar. There are three restaurants at the hotel, and a large indoor bar. Le Terrazze Restaurant exudes elegance, and has a large terrace with a view of the sea. Palazzo Santa Caterina is also outside on a covered patio. Sala Pirandello is the indoor restaurant, and has a more casual atmosphere. The hotel also has a small meeting room, a computer, a small library in the lobby, and it's own parking lot, which is rare in Taormina. Wi-Fi comes at a cost.
