A wide stone lane leads to the Pensione’s pale yellow facade and arched entrance with wooden doors. The lobby area and the breakfast room are one and the same, contributing to the cozy atmosphere. Far from stuffy, light regularly streams into the common area, highlighting the strategically placed antiques and colorful modern art. Most of the guests are older couples visiting Sicily, though children are welcome here too.

The Pensione is in Scopello, a quaint village perched on a cliff overlooking the coast, about 40 minutes from the Palermo airport. Local attractions include the Zingaro nature reserve, which is to the north of the property. The hotel’s location is also well situated for day trips to the ancient village of Erice, a 45-minute drive west, and the Islamic architecture of Monreale, which is an hour away to the east.

The property’s 10 air-conditioned rooms are large, simple, and elegantly appointed, with wrought-iron beds, beautifully painted wooden armoires, and floors with a floral border. You won't find a TV here but all rooms come with minibars and hairdryers, and bathrooms have large curtained stall showers and towel warmers. Some units have balconies with sea views. Rooms directly above the kitchen may get noise from staff cleaning and meal preparation.

As a B & B, amenities at the Pensione are limited compared to other properties, though the beauty of the locale is a feature in and of itself. Breakfast consists of fresh bread and condiments, including local honey and homemade marmalade, along with strong cappuccino. Dinner, which may include pasta with sardines and wild fennel along with local seafood, is eaten with other guests at a certain time, which is fine for travelers who don’t mind socializing. Drinks, including water and wine, are not included in the price of the meal, which is compulsory in peak summer months.
