Bottom Line

Set just off of central Siem Reap, this a small, 45-room hotel offers easy access to the area's restaurants, bars, and shops. It's a quick 10-minute walk from the Old Market and happening Pub Street and a 10- to 15-minute drive to both the temples at Angkor Wat and the airport. Mid-range rooms have a few decorative flourishes (carved wooden doors, attractive photographs), but they're nothing fancy. Old phones and tube TVs are showing their age, but free breakfast and free Wi-Fi are welcome touches. Facilities are sparse here aside from the hotel restaurant, but that does feature a pleasant terrace to eat alfresco. While the hotel certainly isn't upscale, it's a decent value compared to its neighbors. (The mid-range Golden Temple Villa can be significantly more expensive.)

Angkor Pearl Hotel

Scene

Artistic Angkor Wat photos and carved wooden doors give decorative touches to an otherwise bland space

On approach, the Angkor Pearl doesn't make a strong impression: Square columns support a plain beige and tan facade that could pass for an office building. An elaborately carved front door is the one decorative statement. The dimly lit lobby uses wood liberally in the ceilings, the gleaming columns, and the front desk. Unfortunately the linoleum floors and a beige sectional sofa don't add any elegance to the room. The owner, a professional photographer, uses the hotel as his default gallery, and his excellent Angkor Wat shots are displayed in the lobby, hallways, and rooms of the Angkor Pearl. The other exceptional decorative detail are the carved wooden doors, used in all the rooms in addition to the entrance. The restaurant's outdoor terrace provides a restful space, but aside from breakfast, most guest don't linger. The hotel is simply their budget home base so they can explore the area.

Location

Centrally located on a quieter side street, a 10-minute walk to Pub Street and Old Market

Located in central Siem Reap, the Angkor Pearl Hotel is only a 10-minute walk to the happening Pub Street and the Old Market. Restaurants, bars, and shops line the neighboring streets. While the hotel is close to all the central attractions, it's on a quieter side street, minimizing the area's noise. It's a 15-minute drive to both the international airport and the temples of Angkor Wat, and plenty of tuk-tuk taxis can be found outside the hotel at all times of day, ready to zip guests to other areas.

Rooms

Basic rooms offset by Angkor Wat photos and decorative wood throughout

Carved wooden doors adorn the entry of every guest room, and polished wood is generously used throughout the decor in the room's trim, headboards, and slatted benches and chairs. Khmer bedding in navy or burgundy and more Angkor Wat photos add more tasteful touches. But aside from those decorations, rooms can feel basic with beige walls and worn furnishings. Old phones and tube TVs don't help. Still, rooms are sizable and all come equipped with electric kettles, safes, empty mini-fridges, a small desk, and free Wi-Fi. The Superior Twin Rooms and the Deluxe Double Rooms have the same price and features, the only difference being twin or double beds. Plain bathrooms outfitted in white or off-white tile are rather unremarkable, but note that some only have showers. The Apsara Suites, the highest room category, does offer more space, with a separate sitting area and a small vanity. But none of the rooms have balconies or any views to speak of.

Features

Few features aside from a small restaurant serving free breakfast and authentic Khmer food

As a mid-range property, the Angkor Pearl is light on features. A small restaurant and bar adjacent to the lobby serves a free buffet breakfasts. Authentic Khmer cuisine and Western dishes are also available for lunch and dinner. Decorated in the same fashion as the lobby with wood trim and glass lotus-shaped lights, the restaurant does have a pleasant outdoor terrace with seating. A small workstation with a guest computer is also available in the lobby. The hotel has plans to add a spa in coming years; in the meantime, in-room massages can be arranged.
