Bottom Line

The 64-room Sultan Hotel is a lovely boutique in the historic district of Kampong Glam. Though there are few hotels in the area (most tourists choose to stay in downtown or Chinatown), the location is within walking distance of numerous sights. Constructed from 10 historic shops, the hotel has attractive period details including arched doorways, wood-beamed ceilings, and latticework screens. The rooms, however, aren't quite as charming as the lobby or the on-site restaurant. Suites have some attractive features and design touches, and standard rooms are decorated in clean, contemporary decor of whites and light woods -- but they're small, and bathrooms are cramped. Amenities are modern, however, and include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and espresso machines. Hotel highlights include the rooftop bar, and Pasha restaurant, serving Moroccan cuisine.

Location

In the Arab Street district, within easy reach of other popular areas of the city

Aptly named, the Sultan Hotel is located in the Arab Street District (also referred to as Kampong Glam), an area where Middle Eastern culture can be experienced daily. The streets are lined by historic buildings and markets selling spices, flowers, and rugs. It is also home to a historic palace (now a heritage center) and the largest mosque in Singapore.Though the Arab Street district is often not what people picture when envisioning Singapore, major attractions are not too far away. It lies right above the downtown area and Marina Bay, and east of Little India, which has a similar vibe to the Arab Street district.Singapore is known for heavy traffic so all of these travel times are estimates.- 19-minute drive to Changi International Airport, or 48 minutes via public transportation
