Bottom Line

This large, grand hotel is located just outside Sorrento’s city center on a medium-size road that leads out of town. The property was built in the late 20th century, but has adopted the decor of earlier eras, which makes for a look of classic opulence from a bygone time. The lobby is outfitted in chandeliers and decorative tiles characteristic of late 19th-century Italian decor. The restaurants and bars take full advantage of a fantastic view offered by the hotel’s location perched on a cliff above the Bay of Naples. A network of five cascading pools (with sea views) completes the grandeur. The design aesthetic carries over to the guest rooms; some guests have noted that rooms are pleasant, though not quite as fantastic as the common areas.

Oyster Hotel Review

Grand Hotel Capodimonte

Scene

A large hotel with old-world charm that attracts English-speaking tourists

Older guests (retirees from England in particular) seem to favor the 188 rooms of this large, late 20th-century resort, which is a frequent feature of British tourist packages. The aesthetic here is a contemporary take on historical style: a bit showy, but beautiful all the same. Pastel hallways lead to grandiose common areas adorned with wall-mounted ceramics, ornate floor tiles in traditional patterns, and glass chandelier sconces. The sizable lobby is a definite standout, with its ample number of cream-colored love seats and a large terrace overlooking the Bay of Naples.

Location

Less than a 15-minute walk from the Piazza Tasso on a medium-size road leading out of the city

The hotel is less than a 15-minute walk to Piazza Tasso, considered the center of the old section of Sorrento and replete with restaurants, shops, and pleasant places to stroll. The train station is a 20-minute walk from the property; the Naples airport is an hour away by car. Grand Hotel Capodimonte is perched on a hill and set on a medium-size road that does get some traffic -- guests have reported the occasional noise disturbance, though not in excess.

Rooms

Furnished in a classic style that reflects the hotel's overall design aesthetic

The guest rooms are airy and light-colored, with accents such as cheery tiles and sconce lighting that reflect the hotel's classic Italian design aesthetic. Various rooms have balconies that offer garden or ocean vistas. Be sure to check which type you are getting before booking, as some guests are unsatisfied with the partial sea views. All have AC, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and Wi-Fi. Most have shower/tub combos, marble sinks, and light inlaid wood furniture. The bedding here is slightly dated, and some have noted that pillows are on the hard side.

Features

Two restaurants, two bars, and a network of outdoor pools overlooking the bay

The fantastic views of Sorrento and the Bay of Naples can be enjoyed from multiple vantage points on the property, including from the two restaurants and two bars. One dining option is large and ornate, with gold accents and columns. It opens onto a terrace with additional seating. The other is a smaller outdoor space adorned with a tile floor, stone statues, and lush vegetation. Menus are comprised of regional cuisine, international fare, and grilled specialties. Hot and cold breakfast buffets are included in the room price. Some guests have noted that the food is not as good as what can be had in town for the same price. A network of outdoor cascading pools built into the cliffside is a definite highlight, particularly given the stunning views they offer. The property also has a business center, a car rental outpost, and parking for a fee.
