Simpson Bay Resort & Marina
Billy Folly Road #37

Simpson Bay Resort & Marina was impacted by Hurricane Irma **in September 2017. The hotel is currently closed for repairs and hopes to reopen in Spring 2018. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. **This upper-middle-range resort in popular and beautiful Simpson Bay on the Dutch side is one of the best values on the island. It's enormous, especially for St. Maarten, with 342 rooms, six pools, four restaurants, and a long beach. The rooms are stylish and modern and have full kitchens, king beds, flat-screen TVs, and memory foam mattresses. Although the resort is huge, it doesn’t have a big-box, cheesy feel. There are a few small annoyances, including a fee to use the fitness center, a long check-in time, and lukewarm showers at certain times of the day. Those willing to trade in-room kitchens for the option of an all-inclusive package should consider the Divi Little Bay Beach Resort.

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa
1 Rhine Road

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino is an upper-middle-range hotel located in St. Maarten’s Maho Village. With 395 guest rooms, it’s the biggest all-inclusive property on the island and features the extensive array of dining and activity options travelers would expect from a resort this size. The resort offers easy access to the island’s largest casino and one of its trendiest night clubs, along with a touristy beach where visitors often clamor to get a glimpse of jumbo jets landing at the nearby airport. This resort is big on entertainment, but offers little in the way of local charm. Guests looking for a tranquil vacation might consider the more secluded Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa instead.

Oyster Bay Beach Resort
Emerald Merit Rd 10

**Oyster Bay Beach Resort was impacted by *Hurricane Irma* in September 2017 and is currently closed for repairs. We will update our review as soon as we know more. **The upper-middle-range Oyster Bay Beach Resort has an optimal spot perched on a hill overlooking the Caribbean Ocean, and within easy walking distance of the white sands of Dawn Beach. With a beautiful infinity pool, a host of dining and drinking options, and stunning bay views, it provides nearly every amenity travelers expect in a three-and-a-half-pearl hotel. The 180-rooms are all spacious and contemporary with modern features -- flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and coffeemakers -- and many have balconies with spectacular ocean views. With rooms ranging in size from studios to two-bedroom suites, expect to see plenty of families and couples. Those looking for a quieter and more tranquil option could consider Bleu Emeraude, though it has less amenities and a higher price.

Horizon View Beach Hotel
Front Street 49

Horizon View Beach Hotel was impacted by Hurricane Irma in September 2017. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. One of the cheapest options in St. Maarten, this 30-room hotel on Philipsburg’s Great Bay Beach certainly doesn’t roll out the red carpet. The entry through a dark corridor is unnerving, the rooms are old and musty, and an almost complete lack of amenities provide little enticement beyond budget-friendly prices. If money is less an issue, try the much nicer Holland House Beach Hotel next door -- the slightly higher rates are well worth it.

Pasanggrahan Royal Guesthouse
Front Street # 19

Pasanggrahan Royal Guesthouse was impacted by Hurricane Irma in September 2017. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. Pasanggrahan Royal Guesthouse is a three-pearl hotel located in Philipsburg, the Dutch capital of St. Martin. The hotel’s 35 guest rooms range from quaint to grand, though all feature delightful vintage decor that pays homage to the building’s long history that dates back to 1904. All rooms have balconies, most of which overlook the ocean, and some also include kitchens and multiple bedrooms. The hotel offers direct access to Great Bay Beach, as well as the bustling shops of Front Street. Moana Steak & Sea Food Restaurant focuses on freshly caught seafood. Notable downsides are the lack of a pool and the fee for breakfast. Guests interested in a less touristy beachfront location might consider LOVE Hotel in Grand Case.

Belmond La Samanna
Baie Longue, PO Box 4077

Easily the most luxurious resort in St. Martin, the 55-acre La Samanna resort brings tranquility to an otherwise tourist-filled island. Featuring two beautiful pools, an extensive wine cellar, a yoga and Pilates studio, a European-style spa, and the island's most pristine beach, this 81-room, eight-villa retreat is hard to beat. The vibe is about as fancy as it gets for St. Martin, so of course everything -- from the nightly rates to the dinners and spa treatments -- comes at a sky-high cost.

Hotel La Plantation
C5 Parc de La Baie Orientale

Hotel La Plantation was impacted by Hurricane Irma in September 2017. The hotel is currently closed and plans on reopening in early 2018. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. Perched on a hillside overlooking the Caribbean Ocean, the mid-range Hotel La Plantation has a privileged location. It's within easy walking distance of Orient Bay Beach and Orient Village, but away from the lively beachfront bars and clubs, so it stays quiet. All 53 rooms are spacious and bright, and include kitchenettes, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi (though it can be spotty). French doors open to wraparound terraces in each room and are a major bonus. Other features include a pool with a snack bar, a casual open-air restaurant, free continental breakfast, and the ability to charge some local restaurant bills back to your room. For something closer to the beach, it's worth considering La Playa Orient Bay instead, which has similar amenities at sometimes comparable rates.

Esmeralda Resort
Baie Orientale, Bp 5141

**This resort sustained significant damage from *Hurricane Irma* in September 2017 and is currently completely closed. We will update our review as soon as we have more information.**The mid-range Esmeralda Resort is a low-key beachfront hotel with a colonial-inspired Caribbean vibe in Orient Bar. All 65 rooms are spacious and bright, with modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, kitchenettes, free Wi-Fi, and iPod speakers. The highlight of the rooms are the private terraces around shared swimming pools. Most rooms feature only one king-size bed, so expect to see mostly couples here. There's an attractive restaurant for continental breakfast and French food. The restaurant sits next to the small communal pool, though most guests ignore it in favor of the stunning beach and beachside service. The nearby Hotel La Plantation offers similar amenities and a free breakfast in a more affordable package.

The Summit Hotel
Jordan Road # 42, The Lowlands

**This hotel was tragically destroyed during *Hurricane Irma* in September 2017.The hotel is currently completely closed for the foreseeable future.** The Summit Hotel is a three-pearl hotel located on the Dutch side of St. Martin, overlooking Simpson Bay Lagoon. The hotel’s 50 guest rooms are clean and pleasant, featuring queen-size sofa beds and kitchens with stove tops. The pool, open-air restaurant, and many guest room balconies are positioned to highlight the property’s striking bay views. Tang's Hideaway serves Asian fare, but breakfast isn't offered. Two nice beaches and a large casino are within a 15-minute walk, to prevent it from feeling overly isolated. But it’s worth comparing rates with the Azure Hotel on Simpson Bay, which lacks the Summit House’s pool but offers direct beach access.I think the restaurant photo album is incorrectly named. According to their website, the restaurant is called Tang's Hideaway, not Fat Tony's. MW
