Bottom Line

This upscale property -- the first ever from the Sofitel chain -- sits squarely in the middle of Strasbourg, two minutes on foot from the main square and walkable to several attractions, including the city’s iconic cathedral. Despite its central location, the hotel is surprisingly quiet. The 150 renovated rooms and suites include minibars, free Wi-Fi, and Hermes bath products, but the rooms are small, and only a few have notable views. Pluses include a tasty breakfast buffet (not included with rates), Terroir & Co French restaurant, Le Link bar with outdoor seating, and a pet-friendly policy. However, the small gym could use more equipment, and guests may also find the lack of a pool or spa disappointing for an upscale hotel. Hotel Le Bouclier d'Or has larger rooms, a more charming historic vibe, and a spa, but no full restaurant.

Sofitel Strasbourg Grande Ile

Scene

Original Sofitel hotel, with renovated, contemporary interiors and a quiet atmosphere

As the world’s first Sofitel, there’s a historic air about this property, but renovated interiors keep it from looking old-fashioned. Polished wood floors, bold pink sofas and bar stools, purple carpets, and hanging metal chandeliers give the massive lobby a modern touch, which extends to contemporary furniture in the dining areas and on the outdoor terraces. The small vineyard growing in the courtyard is a charming touch. A winding staircase leads from the reception area to the mezzanine, where a grand piano is tucked in the corner. The overall quiet atmosphere draws mostly older couple and corporate travelers, and the hotel is also popular with non-guests who come for meals or meetings.

Location

Quiet and convenient city center location; most attractions are within walking distance

Facing a church in the historic hub of Strasbourg, the hotel’s location is incredibly central, but also surprisingly quiet. It’s a convenient two-minute walk from the restaurants and department stores of Place Kleber, the city’s main square. Most other attractions in the UNESCO heritage site are also within 10 minutes on foot, including the charming La Petite France area, the Strasbourg Cathedral, Palais Rohan, and the Alsatian Museum. A train station is a four-minute walk away, and it takes 20 minutes by public transport to reach Parc de l’Orangerie. Strasbourg International Airport is a 22-minute drive away.

Rooms

Small, with some dated furnishings; all have minibars, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi

Decorated in purple, red, and cream tones, and infused with a soft lemony fragrance, rooms are tasteful and a touch small. With narrow closet space and no dressers, storing clothes can be tricky, and some guests note that the spaces can look dark and air-conditioning doesn’t do an adequate cooling job.

Classic Rooms with queen beds, at 183 square feet, have small LCD TVs, Bose systems with iPod docks, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Tea-and coffee-making facilities are provided, along with pricey minibars. Superior Rooms have one queen or two single beds, while Luxury Rooms have king or twin beds and come with pleasant views of the square. Suites can have Nespresso machines, multiple bathrooms, DVD players, sofa beds, and private terraces.

Bathrooms are clean, with white tiles and granite sink tops, vanity mirrors, and Hermes bath products. All have shower/tub combos with handheld showerheads. Hairdryers are provided.

Features

Good restaurant, breakfast buffet, and business facilities

The hotel’s Terroir & Co restaurant, with its wooden floors, leather chairs, and impressive wine collection, is popular with both hotel guests and Alsace locals for its sleek aesthetics and tasty French food. The menu features classic French fare using local ingredients; vegetarian and kids’ menus are available, too. A breakfast room serves a daily breakfast (not included with rates), which serves special items like smoked salmon, sliced chicken, and ratatouille alongside staples like eggs, breads, cheeses, and fruits. 24-hour room service is available. Fuschia and orange chairs and 1940s-style decor give Le Link bar lots of character, and outdoor seating is available as well. Cocktails and light snacks are offered.

The gym is clean and provides towels and water, but it's on the small side with just a few machines. There’s a beauty salon on-site, as well, but guests may miss having a spa and pool.

Business amenities include a staffed business center and copy/printing services, along with property-wide free Wi-Fi. Eleven modern meeting and boardrooms of various sizes are available, many with lovely views of the nearby church.

Wheelchair access, visual alarms, and phone lights add useful accessibility features. Babysitting and ironing/dry cleaning services are available on request, and pets are welcome on-site. Private indoor valet parking is available.
