Bottom Line

Sole on the Ocean is an excellent alternative to the chain hotel scene of North Miami Beach. This condo-style hotel offers attractive and convenient condos or smallish guest rooms, some with gorgeous ocean views. The hotel does all of the decorating so there's no worry of some units looking better than others. It's a solid pick for those looking to hang at the beach and by the pool, with the occasional foray into South Beach for shopping or nightlife. Fresh American Bistro and the on-site spa are luxe touches. Watch out for seemingly endless extra charges for everything from valet parking to pots and pans.

Sole Miami A Noble House Resort

Scene

Multistory condo tower on the beach

Sole on the Ocean caters to families and couples, with a slightly sophisticated vibe -- but definitely not an over-the-top "Miami" scene. In the lobby, low, brown suede sofas center around lit tables decorated with elaborate floral arrangements. A glass staircase and marble reception desk look modern. A white planter pot holds tall bamboo. The front drive is decorated with artificial grass and wooden planters. Aside from the condo sales desk in the lobby, it's difficult to tell this property is made up of condo-style units.

Location

Between Collins Avenue and the beach

Sole on the Ocean is located on a quieter stretch of Collins Avenue, though there's still plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. Aventura Mall is about a 10-minute drive from the hotel. The beach here is busy, but not with the party scene found at South Beach. There's a charge for valet parking at the hotel.

Rooms

Condo units and small guest rooms; some have kitchens and/or ocean views

There are 215 rooms and suites at Sole on the Ocean and though each of them is privately owned as a condo unit, the hotel is in charge of decorating so each is well-maintained and looks uniform. Sand colored walls and gray carpets are accented with orange molded chairs and dark wood furniture. Sliding wooden doors cover the long closets. Keurig machines, flat-screen TVs, and iHome docks are nice touches. Some of the units have kitchens, though there's an obnoxious fee to rent pots and pans. Bathrooms with glass partitions separating the toilet and open floor shower, directly next to the bathtub, are a little awkward. Units with small balconies overlooking the beach have the best views.

Features

Fresh American Bistro, beach access, a chic swimming pool -- and lots of fees

The rectangular and shallow outdoor swimming pool at Sole on the Ocean isn't the biggest pool in Miami, but it does have ocean views, ample sun loungers and circular day beds, and an adjacent bar. A planted gravel path leads down to patio tables with umbrellas, then the beach. The restaurant, Fresh American Bistro, serves American classics with a French twist and has panoramic sea views. There's an events room with more ocean views that's often used for meetings or small parties. A fitness center, spa, and gift shop round out the features here. Expect seemingly endless fees. On top of the mandatory daily resort fee there are extra charges for parking.
