Hotel Villa Diodoro
Bagnoli Croci 75

The 102-room, three-pearl Hotel Villa Diodoro has a prime hillside spot overlooking the Bay of Naxos and Mount Etna in Taormina. It's next to the public gardens and is a short walk from town and the ancient Greek Amphitheater. Rooms are classic and simple, and several have spectacular views of the sea. The outdoor pool with panoramic sea views is a highlight here, as are the other outdoor spaces, including the property's gardens. The spa and fitness center are nice perks, though the restaurant is mediocre and paid Wi-Fi barely works. For similar features and style with lower rates, consider the Atahotel Capotaormina, though it's not within walking distance of town.

Hotel Bel Soggiorno
Via Luigi Pirandello 60

The 33-room Bel Soggiorno Hotel is a two-and-a-half-pearl hillside option with gorgeous views of the sea and Mount Etna. It's a historic hotel that is a bit old-fashioned, but guests can walk to town and its attractions in about 15 minutes. Rooms are basic, but they have balconies or terraces with spectacular sea views. A free breakfast buffet is served daily in a lovely solarium with a terrace overlooking the sea. There's no other meal service except a weekly gala night with dinner and entertainment, but there is a bar in the lobby. Travelers who'd like an option with a pool could check out the Soleado, which also has lower rates and is a little closer to town. However, it lacks the views found here.

VOI Grand Hotel Atlantis Bay
Via Nazionale 161

The 83-room VOI Grand Hotel Atlantis Bay is a beautiful and upscale hotel on a private bay. Its lovely seaside location and quiet atmosphere is a hit with couples looking to escape Taormina’s crowded center. Every room and suite has views of the sparkling Siren Bay from a private balcony, as well as a flat-screen TV, espresso machine, minibar, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has an impressive lineup of amenities, including an all-season restaurant with views of the water (and a free breakfast buffet enthusiastically praised by past guests), a swimming pool with food and drink service, a spa, and a fitness center. All in all, Atlantis Bay, along with its sister property Mazzaro Sea Palace, is one of the best hotel picks in the area. For an even more luxurious seaside experience, check out Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea, though rates will be quite a bit higher.

NH Collection Taormina
Via Circonvallazione 11

Contemporary and luxurious, the 63-room NH Collection Taormina provides panoramic views from the rooftop terrace and its facilities, including the small pool, poolside bar, and stylish restaurant terrace. A small, pleasant spa provides free access to the hammam, sauna, and a modern gym. Meeting space fits up to 274 people and business services are available. The hotel is a five-minute walk to shops, cafes, and restaurants on Corso Umberto. Elegantly furnished rooms have modern features -- minibars and flat-screen TVs -- and suites offer terraces with beautiful views and hot tubs. The luxury rooms and views, however, come at high cost, and the pool can get quite crowded.

UNAHOTELS Capotaormina
Via Nazionale 105

Perched on a cliff above the Bay of Naxos, the 190-room Atahotel Capotaormina is a picturesque, upscale property with a cave that leads to a private beach. Lovely sea views are a highlight here, and can be seen from the striking saltwater pool, hot tub, and inviting terraces attached to bars and restaurants. There’s also a modern gym and conference space. Traditional rooms and suites have old-fashioned, pastel furnishings; the sea views from balconies and terraces plus spacious bathrooms are the best features of these accommodations. Guess have complained about the fees for Wi-Fi and wellness center access. This location, unlike the Hotel Villa Carlotta, isn’t in walking distance to Taormina’s city center, but the hotel provides a free shuttle.

Hotel Metropole Taormina Maison d'Hotes
Corso Umberto 154

The 25-room Hotel Metropole Taormina Maison d’Hotes is an upscale boutique hotel overlooking the Ionian Sea in Taormina. Rooms and suites feature flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi, and many have private balconies facing the sea. Seating for the restaurant and bar is set on a terrace with dramatic views. Free breakfast is included in all room rates. There is a small but beautiful infinity pool, as well as a lovely spa. The hotel caters primarily to couples and older guests. For a family-friendly beachfront stay in Taormina, consider VOI Grand Hotel Mazzaro Sea Palace.

Hotel Villa Angela
Via Leonardo da Vinci 71E

Sitting above Taormina, the family-run Hotel Villa Angela provides a sprawling terrace with beautiful Ionian Sea and Mount Etna views. The outdoor pool’s deck and patio in the restaurant -- which serves breakfast and lunch, but not dinner -- also overlook the bay and in the lobby there’s a bar. The 27 traditionally decorated rooms also offer sea-facing terraces and suites have whirlpool tubs. Being on a hillside means there are steep stairs to the city center, but for a fee the hotel provides shuttle service. For a hotel with more facilities, the more expensive Hotel el Jebel may be an alternative.

VOI Grand Hotel Mazzaro Sea Palace
Via Nazionale 147

One of the top hotels in Taormina, VOI Grand Hotel Mazzaro Sea Palace is an upscale beach hotel on the Bay of Mazzaro. Most of the 82 rooms have private balconies or terraces with incredible views of the sea, and all rooms have perks like flat-screen TVs and minibars. The hotel’s restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with the lavish breakfast spread included in all room rates. There is a beachfront pool but most guests go to the beach itself, where there are loungers and food/drink service. While Mazzaro Sea Palace’s large rooms, pool, and beach are great for families, couples could try VOI Grand Hotel Atlantis Bay, the romantic sister property next door. Note that both hotels are seasonal (open April through mid-November).

Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo
Via Teatro Greco 59

Occupying the most spectacular spot in Taormina, the historic Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo is arguably the top luxury hotel in Sicily (and undoubtedly its most famous and opulent). Its 71 rooms and villas are categorically upscale, with Baroque Sicilian decor, minibars, and 24-hour room service. Grand Hotel Timeo’s beautifully manicured, terraced grounds are a destination unto itself, brimming with Mediterranean plants and flowers and offering show-stopping views of Mount Etna and the Bay of Naxos. The hotel’s excellent dining options include an elegant dinner restaurant and a seasonal outdoor restaurant by the heated pool. Other features include a luxurious spa, fitness center, and free shuttles down to Timeo’s sister hotel, Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea, where guests can enjoy the private beach and free boat tours. Those looking for fabulous sea views and Taormina proximity at lower rates could look into Eurostars Monte Tauro, though the experience isn’t the same by a mile. Be aware that the hotel is seasonal; Timeo closes from January through mid-March.

Soleado
Via Dietro Cappuccini 41/A

The 33-room Soleado is a budget property situated in a quiet residential area that's a 10-minute walk from the center of Taormina. The family-run property is basic and has few frills, but the owners create a warm, welcoming environment that families and couples especially appreciate. Rooms are nothing to rave about, but they are clean and spacious and all have a balcony or terrace. Bathrooms, though, are sharp and contemporary. The pool is a nice perk, as are the free breakfast and wine bar. It's hard to find rates like these in the center of town, but the Parc Hotel Ariston is a bit closer to the action and has lovely grounds at marginally higher prices.
