Bottom Line

The 79-room Baan Samui is a mid-range, colorful resort that sits in the middle of Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui's most popular party and beach town. The resort is a 15-minute drive from the airport and is convenient for shopping, dining, and the roaring nightlife that Chaweng is noted for. All rooms feature flat-screen TVs, minibars, and a charge for Wi-Fi, but no water views. There is a big pool by the beach, which is set with sun loungers and umbrellas. Though breakfast buffet is included in the rate, prices are high for a resort without a fitness center or spa.

Baan Samui Resort

Scene

Colorful, mid-range resort set in the heart of Samui's nightlife

Baan Samui is located in a busy spot, set right in the heart of party town Chaweng Beach. However, this resort is not a party animal haven, as it is a higher priced property aimed at couples and families looking for a relaxed stay. The lobby has an artistic vibe with vibrantly painted wall, mosaic tiles on the floor, and displayed pottery. The most happening spot at the resort shifts throughout the day. The beachfront and the pool get all the action from early morning through the afternoon, with guests enjoying the shady tables at the Moondance Restaurant out on the beach. In the evening, the street side of the resort is the place to be, with the Moonwalk Restaurant and Bar opening up, with live music playing and open air seating looking out at the busy Chaweng night scene. The resort is popular with couples; the small and colorful rooms lining the walkway to the beach are good spots to sit and relax.

Location

Right in the heart of Chaweng, Samui's top party town, on the beach

The Baan Samui Resort sits in the middle of Chaweng Beach, which is Koh Samui's main beach town and most popular party spot. The resort is right on the beach, entered from the beach road, with rooms set in long buildings running between the two. It's a 15-minute drive to the airport from here, and guests are just minutes walk from hundreds of restaurants, bars, and shops along the beach road through Chaweng. It can be noisy here, both from the surrounding nightlife and from the airplanes taking off, as Chaweng Beach is right on the flight path out, but it's hard to beat this location for convenience.

Rooms

Brightly painted, cozy rooms but no free Wi-Fi

Rooms are painted in bright colors at Baan Samui Resort; from green to yellow to orange. They are certainly unique to this part of Thailand, and are extremely bright and cheerful. All rooms come with safes, flat-screen TVs, robes and slippers, electric mosquito coils, electric kettles, minibars, and beach mats to take out on the sand. Other than the palatial Family Suite, which is a good bet for families and groups, the rooms are not that big, and don't have any sea or beach views to speak of. Colorful, multi-tiled bathrooms are on the small side, though the standard Deluxe rooms come with a shower/tub combo, the Superior Deluxe have a separate shower unit in addition to the large bath. Stained glass windows allow light into the bathroom from the bedroom. None of the rooms have free Wi-Fi.

Features

Swimming pool next to the beach, plus several restaurants for lunch and dinner

Baan Samui Resort has a circular swimming pool with a kids' section and waterfall jets which sits out by the beach. The beach area has colorful sun loungers and umbrellas, but can get crowded, so guests need to come early to get chairs. The resort does not have a fitness center, spa, nor kids' club, but it does have a colorful Relax Room with cool cushions, chairs, and spots to lie around, plus a small shelf of books. There are more books as well as computers and free Internet in the Library, which sits just above the lobby.

For food and drink, the resort features a breakfast only restaurant, which serves a nice, free buffet. After breakfast, the Moondance Restaurant on the beach opens for lunch, dinner, and drinks. Baan Samui also has a street-side restaurant, Moonwalk, which opens at night, serving up Thai and international food looking out at the nightlife scene of Chaweng, and the open air eatery, which is set around a large banyan tree, also features live music at night. There is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi.
