Chaulty Towers isn't going to win any style awards, but that's not why it draws so many guests (many of whom wind up extending their stay due to the hotel's simple and inviting atmosphere). While there are plenty of larger properties right on the beach in Lamai, this tiny family-run guest house has the charming look of any other residential house in the neighborhood, which makes sense as this was once just the home of the English owner and his Thai wife. As such, the vibe is refreshingly intimate and welcoming, and more akin to a home stay.

A sign on the narrow street alerts guests that they've arrived. Once inside the gate, guests will find a peaceful haven, with rooms clustered around the small swimming pool, plus a casual restaurant and bar taking up the rest of the space. The restaurant functions as the lobby and the bar as the front desk. The majority of those who find their way to Chaulty Towers are couples and solo travelers, though a few families stay here as well. 

Chaulty Towers is located up a small hill from Lamai Beach. While it can feel like the residential area is in the middle of nowhere -- there's lots of green in every direction -- it's only a 10-minute walk to Lamai's main town and 15 minutes to the beach. Lamai -- Koh Samui's second most popular beachside destination -- has a more laid-back vibe than Chaweng up the coast, but there's still a good deal of nightlife, bars, dining, and tourist shops lining every street in the center of town. There are a few services closer to the hotel, including a 7-11 just five minutes away on foot. It's about a 30-minute drive to the Samui Airport, and the hotel can arrange airport transfers for a fee.

On the whole -- and not surprising given the home-like vibe of the hotel -- the rooms here have a simple, homey aesthetic. They are bright and pleasant, especially when compared to some of the other value options in the area, but humble. For the most part, decor includes slightly mismatched wicker, rattan, and solid wood furniture that shows a bit of wear, heavy curtains, white walls, and bedding with a little local flavor (like the elephant-print bedspreads in the Standard Room that we visited). Upgraded rooms have a bit more polish, and the Deluxe and Family Rooms that we saw have wood laminate floors as well as additional artful touches.

All rooms have DVD players, mini-fridges, stereo systems, air-conditioning, safes, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi. Many rooms have flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, though some televisions rooms have older tube TVs. All rooms also have some sort of small seating area, which are of course larger in higher-category rooms. Family rooms have a separate area with bunk beds for the kids and have microwaves as well. Deluxe Rooms open onto the swimming pool and have small patios, while the patio in the Standard Room looks onto the parking area. Bathrooms, for the most part, are modern, with tile floors and walls. They are relatively spacious and have a walk-in shower, which is separated from the rest of the bathroom by glass in higher-category bookings. Deluxe and Family Rooms provide a decent amount of counter space around sinks, and basic toiletries plus towels are provided.

Chaulty Towers is a tiny family-run guest house, and as such it doesn't come with too many extras. There's a decent-size courtyard swimming poolthat's surrounded by a small deck with cabanas and other places to sit. The lanterns are a nice touch. Next to this is the hotel's lobby/restaurant/bar, which is a relaxed, open-air space that has a large flat-screen TV showing movies plus a cushioned sofa to chill out on in addition to restaurant seating. The guest house serves a full English breakfast, though it's not included in room rates, along with plenty of Thai favorites throughout the day. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and the hotel can arrange services like airport transfers, moped, and car rentals. They can also arrange island tours. A free shuttle into town and to the beach is also available.
