At first glance, the Sheraton Samui Resort is shrouded from passersby thanks to a lean, winding driveway flanked by thick trees. Once at the hotel’s entry, it somehow feels appropriate that a space so grand is hidden from plain view. Lush greens surround the entire property, and the imposing lobby features a dramatic, cathedral-type ceiling made with slats of pale mocha wood. In the center, a lighthouse-style column lit from within casts a faint, slightly dim glow over the room’s simple tile floors and casual sofa seating. It’s cool and airy here, and the hotel’s restaurants and bars evoke that same open-air concept, even in spaces confined within four walls. Those seeking a quiet getaway or a true spa vacation can find it here -- it’s charmed and romantic, and a good alternative to the busier pace in the center of town. However, families also benefit from the hotel's kids' club and spacious multi-room units.

Along a peaceful stretch of Chaweng Noi Beach, this hillside hotel is within a five-minute drive of the much busier Chaweng Beach district. Those wanting the party scene will need to drive a bit farther north -- about 10 minutes. This spot, though, is ideal for those who prefer a little solitude yet want to be close enough to all of the action. Shops at both the stylish Wharf Samui Mall and the traditional Fisherman’s Village are both about 20 minutes away by car. Area attractions aren’t far either: the Samui Aquarium & Tiger Zoo and the Big Buddha statue are an approximately 25-minute drive. For those who don’t mind a longer trek, the stunning Namuang Waterfall is about a half-hour drive, followed by another half-hour’s walk to the falls. The Samui International Airport is a 15-minute car ride.

Rooms at the Sheraton Samui Resort are as breezy and bright, though the nautical theme isn't the most modern that we've seen. Colors are light and airy, with soft pastel and blue tones that play well with the hardwood floors. All are air-conditioned (though guests report some rooms have noisy units that don't always work well), with modern amenities like free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, minibars, and flat-screen TVs with premium cable channels. Some of the furnishings are a bit dated and worn. The rooms all have balconies with views of the property’s lush gardens, and some offer sea views. Some previous guests note that the abundant foliage on the property can obstruct ocean views from some rooms.

Standard units range from 34 to 43 square meters (366 to 463 square feet), while the 49-square-meter (527-square-foot) Deluxe Rooms and 55-square-meter (592-square-foot) Studio Rooms have sofa beds and more spacious terraces. (Beach enthusiasts, note that Deluxe Rooms offer direct access.) One- and Two-Bedroom Suites range from 77 to 102 square meters (829 to 1098 square feet). Both have roomy living areas, multiple flat-screen TVs, and beach-themed wall art. The Two-Bedroom Suite has two floors and can sleep up to six guests, and breakfast is included in its room rate. 

Unfortunately, it’s the bathrooms that cause a little jolt: the mustard-yellow tiles pair well enough with the teakwood countertops, but the look is undeniably dated. All feature deep soaking tubs and spacious glass-enclosed showers. 

There’s never a lack of activity at the Sheraton Samui Resort, and predictably, plenty of activity centers on the two outdoor pools: one nestled in the hillside gardens, and the other directly on the beachfront. Both offer limited dining menus, with casual options like Greek salads and club sandwiches. 

Meanwhile, the beachfront Long Talay restaurant features a menu of seafood, Thai, and global cuisines. It’s done in soft white wood tones, rattan ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows that provide exquisite views of the crystal blue waters just feet away. Coco Spice serves a daily breakfast buffet consisting of baked goods, plus international and Pan-Asian fare. The setting is earthy, with terra-cotta floors, oak-wood ceiling fans, and whitewashed ceilings. For a little on-site nightlife, the Blue Monkey Bar is a tranquil, wide wooden terrace that overlooks the Gulf of Siam -- it draws some serious crowds during happy hour thanks to its drink specials.

The hotel’s Balinese-influenced Glow Spa has a calming aura, what with its soft-glow lighting, textured off-white walls, and plush seating. The treatment menu includes extensive body and nail services. There’s also a tennis court, along with a fitness center with floor-to-ceiling windows that provide garden views. The hotel also has a kids’ activity zone, 24/7 cart transport to move from place to place throughout the property, and free Wi-Fi. There is a shuttle into Chaweng, but it's not free.
