Kadoya Hotel occupies a narrow 10-story building on a pleasant tree-lined street in the heart of Shinjuku. Sliding glass entrance doors reveal a small but elegant lobby area of wood paneled walls, a marble-topped reception counter, and a fancy chandelier. The space doubles as a shop selling an eclectic mix of products, like orthopedic pillows, umbrellas, wallets, Shiseido products, souvenirs, and T-shirts. A few tables and chairs in a corner make up a casual seating area. A door connects to Cafe La Voie, a small, charming cafe run by the same management. This is a popular place to stay with leisure travelers, especially couples and families.

Shinjuku is one of Tokyo's most vibrant neighborhoods, known as an important business, shopping, and entertainment area. Shinjuku station -- a major railway station (which connects to the subway) -- is just a six-minute walk away. The guest rooms at Kadoya Hotel are basic but clean, with the best rooms being the Comfort Rooms, which were refurbished in 2014. These have been repainted and feature an olive green accent wall as well as dark green carpeting. The pale wood furniture looks new and consists of a combination desk and shelving unit. The older Standard Rooms are fitted with dark furniture, many revealing scratches and other signs of wear and tear, as well as brown carpeting. Several of the Single and Double Rooms are cramped, with the bed taking up most of the floor space. All rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and electric kettles. The bathrooms in many of the rooms are tiny but clean, outfitted with functional Japanese-style fittings consisting of small bathtubs and plastic sinks squeezed in between the tub and the toilet. Other handy amenities include Japanese robes, slippers, free toiletries, and a hairdryer.

Like many local mid-range hotels, Kadoya Hotel offers a limited set of features. Breakfast is served at the adjacent Café La Voie for an extra fee, with both Japanese and Western breakfasts available. The on-site Japanese restaurant, Hatago, is an “izakaya” where drinks, snacks, and other simple dishes are served, in a charming setting with Japanese-style decor. The hotel also has a laundry room with coin-operated machines and a few drink vending machines. An on-site meeting room can seat 18 to 30 people, and a computer and printer are available for guest use in the lobby. Guests can rent laptops from the front desk for an extra fee, as well as other handy gadgets and appliances like a trouser press, humidifier, iron, adapter, or LAN cable.
