Bottom Line

Studio 6 Toronto is a two-pearl hotel located on the outskirts of the city’s Chinatown neighborhood. The 75 rooms at this hotel are cheerful and modern, although detail-oriented guests may notice a few flaws in the workmanship. In-room kitchens offer stovetops and full-size fridges, and there are a number of reasonably-priced dining options a 10-minute walk away. The hotel is within 600 feet of public transit, making it a convenient base for exploring the city; but guests looking for on-site amenities may be disappointed by the hotel’s limited facilities. The nearby Hilton Garden Inn Toronto has nicer rooms and facilities, but prices are higher.

Oyster Hotel Review

Studio 6 Toronto

Scene

Budget-friendly chain hotel with modern design

Tucked in a residential neighborhood and with an exterior that resembles an old-fashioned apartment building, Studio 6 isn’t immediately recognizable as a hotel. The entrance is somewhat confusing, with one set of doors labeled “Office” leading into a modern reception area; and the other leading into a dated apartment-style lobby with a white laminate front desk, gray and white walls, and two armless chairs. The decor in the reception and hallways is reminiscent of IKEA furniture -- appealing from a distance but relatively low grade upon close inspection.

Location

Central, residential location on the Dundas streetcar line

Surrounded by low-rise buildings and a preschool, the area directly around Studio 6 is quite bland and past guests have reported that the neighborhood can feel seedy at night.

It’s a two-minute walk to Dundas Street, where the 505 Dundas streetcar passes every five- to-10 minutes. The streetcar reaches St. Patrick subway station in less than 10 minutes; or guests can also ride the streetcar directly to busy Yonge-Dundas Square in under 15 minutes. The hotel is less than a 10-minute walk away from Kensington Market and Chinatown, both of which offer eclectic shopping and dining options.

Rooms

Cheerful rooms feature modern decor and kitchens with stovetops

Guest rooms are decorated mainly in sleek gray and black tones, with some light-colored woods and pops of lime green keeping the appearance bright. Compact kitchens with granite countertops are set alongside the beds, with full-size fridges found around the corner at a separate coffee-and-tea-making station. Kitchens include stovetops, microwaves, and toasters, as well as cutlery, plates, and cookware. Tiny dining tables are set underneath flat-screen TVs. Windows offer views of the nondescript residential buildings that neighbor the hotel.

Average-size bathrooms feature shower/tub combos, and cute yellow cabinets. Off-brand soaps and travel-sized bottles of Pantene shampoo are provided. Overall, rooms are pleasant and tidy, but the furniture looks low-quality and bits of peeling paint, scuff marks, and spots of grout can be found here and there. Pets are welcome for an added fee and with restrictions.

Features

Coin-operated laundry and free Wi-Fi

Don't expect to find a restaurant, bar, or breakfast service at the hotel.
