The Emerald Cove Koh Chang

This upscale beachfront hotel has been open since 2014 and has a more modern feel than some of its nearby competitors. Even so, elements of classic Thai style can still be seen throughout the property. Details like hardwood floors and exposed beams in the lobby mix with cool, soothing tones. The large outdoor swimming pool -- a highlight here -- is surrounded by a spacious deck with shaded loungers. It looks out to sea, which helps to set a relaxed, romantic tone. In fact, those sea views are a major draw at this property, where old-growth palms tower high above. There are numerous nooks to relax in the lobby or bars, and the beach stays blissfully calm on most days. Given the romantic vibe of the hotel, it’s no surprise that couples are the main guests here, but the large pool, children’s playground, and kids' activity program mean that it’s also a popular choice for vacationing families.   

Located on South Klong Prao Beach, the hotel is within a five-minute walk from a host of simple bars and restaurants. Travelers interested in visiting other parts of the island can rent a scooter, or flag down a songtaew -- a local pickup truck taxi. The resort also offers a shuttle service to transport guests around the local area, though it costs extra. Khlong Phlu Waterfall is 10 minutes away by car, and more adventurous visitors looking to trek in the mountains can rent ATVs to zip around the jungle. Getting to Koh Chang isn't exactly easy. There are daily flights to Trat from Bangkok -- taking around one hour -- and from there travelers can catch a pickup truck taxi to the Koh Chang ferries. Driving from Bangkok directly to the ferry terminal will take up to four hours depending on traffic, which can be horrible.

The Emerald Cove’s 165 rooms and suites all have a fresh and bright look with a modern edge, especially when compared to some of the bland hotels found elsewhere on Koh Chang. They're decorated in subtle a Thai style, with polished hardwood floors, teak furniture, and neutral hues. There's just a splash of bold color seen in soft furnishings, over-headboard accents, and a few pieces of wall art. You will likely spot a bit of wear, but it's nothing too disruptive. Rooms are spacious, and some offer pool or mountain views (certain units even overlook the sea). All have furnished terraces or balconies. Standard features include air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, mini-fridges, safes, desks, and seating areas. Suites add stereo systems and separate bedrooms. The location of the hotel means that there's little noise traveling to rooms, which allows them to remain largely peaceful -- particularly those with mountain facing views. Bathrooms range in size, and feature a mix of marble, granite, and slate in walls, floors, and surrounds. All have showers and separate tubs, modern fixtures and fittings, and come with hairdryers, robes, and toiletries.

While it's one of the nicer properties in this part of town, the Emerald also manages to pack in some great features; one of these being a stretch of beach with day beds and warm water that's suitable for swimming at most times of the year. The large outdoor swimming pool has poolside bar service and a deck with shaded and sunny loungers. Massages, facials, or other treatments are available at the Breeze Spa, which features several treatment rooms, changing rooms, and showers. The resort also has a beauty salon. A fitness center offers a range of modern cardio equipment, weights, benches, and exercise balls, and provides a water cooler and towels. The Cove Terrace serves a mix of Italian and international cuisine, while Just Thai specializes in local fare. Guests also have the option of beachfront dining. A breakfast buffet is included in rates. There's a playground for travelers who are traveling with kids and scheduled activities take place on occasion for the little ones. Staff can arrange tours and tickets, and the hotel offers airport transfers (for a fee). A currency exchange, luggage storage, room service, and a local shuttle bus service (fee) are all available. Wi-Fi is free.
