Bottom Line

The upper-middle-range Point Pleasant Resort is a large, spacious hillside property on the East End of the island, a convenient, scenic location close to Red Hook's restaurants and shopping. Features include three pools and an on-site restaurant. The villas are privately owned and managed, with varying decor, but each unit is spacious with a large living room and fully equipped kitchen. There is a small but rocky beach in front of the property that doesn’t have much room for lounging, but guests are free to use the beach next door at Sugar Bay Resort. The kitchen-equipped condos at the mid-range Paradise Cove are cheaper, but the property has only one small pool and is not on the beach.

Scene

Large, hilly property

Point Pleasant Resort is set on a 15-acre hilltop preserve. Guests enter the property at the main road, then long, winding roads lead to different areas of the resort, which then descends to the water on the other side of the hill. The property has gorgeous mountain and sea views throughout. There are many stone walkways, steps, and hills throughout the resort, and it’s not recommended for folks with mobility issues.

Because of the size of the property, it never feels crowded. Many guests report having any of the three pools to themselves or only sharing with one or two other guests.

Point Pleasant represents a good balance of private, condo-style living and resort-style amenities, including a restaurant. The guests are mixed with couples, families, and groups. The fully-equipped kitchens and spacious living areas are good for long stays.

Location

Close to Red Hook’s restaurants, bars, and ferry

Point Pleasant Resort is located on the East End of the island, known for its beaches and snorkeling. The resort is a five-minute drive from Red Hook, a small, quaint town with great restaurants, shopping, and the ferry to St. John. The hotel is a 20-25-minute drive from the airport and Charlotte-Amalie, depending on traffic.

Like most hotels in St. Thomas, there is not much within walking distance, and the narrow, winding mountain roads are not pedestrian friendly. Taxis charge per person and can add up quick. A car rental is recommended.

  • 3-minute drive to Coki Beach
  • 5-minute drive to Red Hook
  • 20-minute drive to the airport
  • 18-minute drive to Charlotte-Amalie
  • 14-minute drive to Magens Bay
  • 17-minute drive to Paradise Point Skyride
  • 16-minute drive to Blackbeard's Castle
  • 10-minute drive to Yacht Haven Grande
  • 19-minute drive to St. Peter Great House and Botanical Gardens
  • 8-minute drive to Mahogany Run Golf Course

Rooms

Large and attractive villas

Like many properties in the area, the units at the resort are individually owned and managed through different companies; therefore the décor and maintenance of the rooms vary. All of the villas are spacious and attractive. The furniture is not exactly contemporary but beachy and colorful with bright cushions, wicker wood, and colorful accents. The kitchens are beautifully updated with marble counters and new appliances. The units have private balconies that offer terrific ocean views.

The kitchens have pots, pans, glasses, dishes, and cooking and eating utensils, as well as microwaves, toasters, and coffeemakers. Some kitchens even have thoughtful upgrades, like a Panini press or George Foreman grill. All units have a hair dryer, iron and ironing board, A/C, and a safe.

Features

Three pools and an on-site restaurant

The resort has three pools on different levels of the property. The upper pool is accessed down a steep stone walkway (the steps were cut into the natural rock) and is situated in the interior of the property. This pool offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills. There is shade from trees on two sides of the pool while the other two are open to the sun. Lounge chairs are lined up around the pool and it is quiet and relaxing. The middle pool is also quiet, and has great sea and mountain views and a decent-size deck with loungers. The lower pool is more open and not as nicely landscaped, but sits right on the water and has great bay views. The restaurant and bar is located down a short set of stairs, which makes it easy to get drinks by the pool.

The resort has a tiny beachfront that doesn’t have much sand and is rocky, but guests can use the beach at Sugar Bay Resort next door. The beach can be accessed through the road or through the water, by swimming around a rock barrier. For guests who want a resort situated on a spacious beach, nearby Sapphire Beach Hotel and Crystal Cove Beach Resort are a good bet.

Shoreline Bar & Grille is located on the lowest level of the resort, near the pool. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in an open-air, waterside environment and has a bar. There is also a restaurant by the middle pool that serves all three meals.
