Bottom Line

The Alla Corte Rossa is a simple, no-frills hotel suited to budget travelers planning on spending most of their time out and about exploring Venice. The highlight here is its location in the Dorsoduro District, a relaxed neighborhood that's a bit away from the overwhelming hustle of the touristy areas, but still close to the train station and within a 15-minute walk to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. The two-pearl property itself is worn and tired, and it lacks any common spaces or features -- including Wi-Fi. The six guest rooms, however, are homey and pleasant, some with lovely canal views, and equipped with en-suite bathrooms, mini-fridges, and air-conditioning. A simple breakfast can be delivered to rooms for an added fee. For alternative budget options that offer Wi-Fi, check out Hotel Iris or the Hotel Guerrini.

Oyster Hotel Review

Alla Corte Rossa

Scene

Simple, no-frills hotel for budget travelers

This small value hotel caters to budget travelers who don't mind simple, no-frills lodging. There are no common spaces for guests to gather in, and thus not much of an atmosphere -- but the owner is friendly and helpful. The hotel is a bit tired and worn around the edges inside and out; occupying an 18th-century building, its facade is shabby and weathered. It's a good choice for those planning on being out and about for most of the day -- and the central location makes it easy to explore the city on foot. Backpackers looking for something a step up from a hostel are the most frequent guests. Travelers with higher expectations might be disappointed as there are no features to speak of. Note that staircases are steep and there are no elevators in this building.

Location

Convenient location in the Dorsoduro District, within a 10-minute walk to the train

The hotel occupies a convenient location that's within walking distance of several top tourist sites and the train station, which is 10 minutes away. It's situated in the Dorsoduro District, the southwestern part of the city that's a bit quieter than the main attractions, yet home to many great art museums, like the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, both about a 15-minute walk away. The lively Campo Santa Margherita is a five-minute walk away, where guests can find several dining options and bars. There are several historic sites nearby, like the Ca' Rezzonico museum (eight-minute walk) and the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (20-minute walk). The nearest vaporetto stop along the Grand Canal is about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Top tourist attractions like Piazza San Marco, Doge's Palace, and the Rialto Bridge are about a 20- to 25-minute walk away (or about the same time via public transportation). Marco Polo Airport is about a 20-minute drive, or around 40 to 50 minutes via public transit.

Rooms

Simple rooms -- some with lovely canal views -- have tiny tube-style TVs and mini-fridges

Rooms are decent in size, and though a bit worn and tired, they're homey and feature a pleasant simple Venetian style. White walls and dark carpets are the backdrop to beds covered in custard and cream striped bedspreads, while sunny curtains frame the windows. Canary-colored wall accents are a cheerful touch that pair well with the white walls and exposed wooden ceiling beams. All rooms have either desks or tables with chairs. Superior Rooms are a bit larger and offer views over the canal; some have separate sitting rooms. Standard amenities include individually controlled air-conditioning and heating, mini-fridges, and safes, but TVs are tiny and of the older tube-style, plus the hotel lacks Wi-Fi.

Bathrooms in Standard Rooms are quite cramped and have tiny step-in showers. Superior Rooms offer more space and have shower/tub combos (but lack shower curtains). Bidets come standard, as do heated towel racks, wall-mounted hairdryers, and sparse sets of toiletries.
