The 30-room, mid-range Domina Home Giudecca
is a charming, quiet hotel with a sunlit atrium that could be out of a
Henry James novella. The hotel is located on the residential island of
Giudecca, overlooking a peaceful backwater canal. The area is a 15-minute water taxi ride from the city center, but is relaxing and good value for guests who don’t mind traveling
the canals like natives. Rooms are clean, spacious, and individually decorated
with nondescript furniture but lots of architectural interest. Rates are far cheaper than at more centrally located mid-range hotels.
Scene
A quiet, off-the-beaten track boutique hotel
The Domina Home Giudecca is a charming, out
of the way, Venice boutique hotel. Like many smaller Venetian inns, the Domina
has little common space for socializing or people watching. The breakfast room,
however, looks like a conservatory out of a Henry James novella, with streaming
sunlight and lovely views of the Palada Canal. Inside and out, the hotel is
quiet and peaceful, far away from the crazy tourist crowds of the more central city
area. There is a clean but slightly shabby-chic air about the place, a feeling
of being in an historic palazzo. The architecture features raw wood beams,
stone columns, and pink-and-white checkerboard marble floors. Travelers who
want to be in the center of everything will not be happy here, but guests who prefer a hideaway from the tourist mayhem may find the Domina Home
Giudecca a welcome (and repeat) destination.
Location
On a tree-lined residential island, 15 minutes from the city center
The Domina Home Giudecca is one of the few
hotels located on the tree-lined residential
island of Giudecca, which is actually eight small, interconnected islands connected by picturesque footbridges. There are few shops and restaurants in
the immediate area, but the hotel has a private dock, and the Piazza San Marco
and Venice city center are 15 minutes away by public transportation. Venice Marco Polo Airport is within a 20-minute drive of the hotel.
Rooms
Clean and architecturally charming, with canal views
Rooms at the Domina Home Giudecca are clean
and average-size, with lots of period architectural charm, including rustic
wood-beamed ceilings. Furniture is slightly dated and nondescript, but the
overall atmosphere is warm and comfortable. Bathrooms are
modern but small, with showers only, sparse counter space, and old-fashioned
hairdryers. One guest room has a balcony, but many have views of the
Palada Canal. Amenities include air-conditioning, minibars, safes, and flat-screen
TVs with satellite channels and pay-to-view movies. Walls are thin, and neighbors can be
clearly heard. Higher-floor rooms catch the cross breezes, but beware of mosquitoes.
Features
Private boat dock, breakfast buffet, low-key bar, and Wi-Fi in the breakfast room
The Domina Home Giudecca has a private dock
for water taxis. The breakfast buffet is served in an atmospheric
glass-enclosed breakfast room that gets the morning sun. There is a small
canal-side bar reminiscent of an historic Venetian palazzo for sipping Bellinis
and watching the boats go by. Wi-Fi is free, but slow, in the breakfast room.
