Built in 1990, the Haas Haus building was designed by architect Hans Hollein as a retail center, curiously (and controversially) reflecting St. Stephen's Cathedral in its mirrored facade. Now the top four floors are home to the DO & CO Hotel, with the lower levels still playing host to retail enterprises. As a result, hotel guests must ascend somewhat awkwardly to the sixth-floor reception area -- a moody space of curving gray walls and opaque black glass. The small front desk sits in front of a wall of light-suede panels. The dark space is shared with the Onyx bar, a popular local hot spot, and a bank of wood-paneled elevators. A winding staircase leads to the restaurant. 

Located inside the Haas Haus building within Vienna's first district in the center of the capital, DO & CO Hotel is right across the square from St. Stephen's Cathedral. Nearly all the city center's attractions, including museums, designer shopping, and fine dining are within walking distance, and a U-Bahn station (Stephansplatz) is right down the street, allowing for easy access to other parts of the city. The elegant shopping on Kohlmarkt Street, home to brands like Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel, is a five-minute stroll. Vienna International Airport is about 13 miles away -- about a 25-minute cab ride. 

The DO & CO Hotel's 43 rooms take up four floors of the Haas Haus building. Though modest in number, the decor is anything but, with rich hard-wood floors, and walls covered in suede inset with private wine bars. Furnishings are sleek and modern, with glass desks, designer chairs, and silver Turkish end tables. Bang & Olufsen multimedia systems and flat-screens provide high quality in-room entertainment. The rooms are big enough to have plush sitting areas by the windows, which can be tilted open if city noise is not a problem. Bathrooms have an exposed layout, with a large glass walk-in shower (with rainfall showerheads) on one side in plain view of the rest of the room, and although shutters can be closed around it, privacy is still a bit limited. The toilets are hidden behind frosted glass doors in an enclosed stall. Upgrading to a suite will get you a separate jetted tub as well. Some rooms have views of the interior courtyard, but most have great city views, many of St. Stephen's Square. Between the minibar, stocked mini-fridge, and wine and liquor bar, there's plenty to drink, but, alas, there are no coffeemakers.

Known for its impeccable catering, DO & CO opened a restaurant that showcases the company's original mission. The top-floor restaurant's global cuisine is popular with visitors and local residents alike, and it serves a great breakfast with a variety of eggs, smoked fish, and baked goods. There's also  breakfast to go for early risers. The sixth-floor Onyx Bar is also a popular spot, cozy and elegant with a great views and good cocktails. Guests pay a premium for the view and the central location at both. A glass-enclosed rooftop event space, called  the Temple, can be rented out for private dinners, with stunning views of Vienna included.
