Bottom Line

Only four blocks from the U.S. Capitol, the Phoenix Park Hotel is an ideal property for travelers meeting with members of Congress or simply wishing to be near the city's historic Capitol Hill neighborhood. It's an upper-middle-range boutique property with 149 rooms and suites (generally spacious, but a few are tiny). It completed a major renovation in late 2016 and offers polished accommodations along with a nice selection of features including a small fitness center, basic business services, extensive meeting space, and free Wi-Fi. The renowned Dubliner Irish Pub is also attached to the hotel. Union Station is nearby for easy access to Amtrak and the Metrorail's Red Line. For travelers wanting a more traditional hotel with added services -- such as 24-hour room service and a pool -- the Hyatt Regency is a nearby option..

Phoenix Park Hotel

Scene

Historic boutique property that's ideal for being close to politicos and Capitol Hill sights

A member of the Historic Hotels of America, the nine-story, Georgian Revival-style Phoenix Park Hotel was originally built in 1922. It underwent an extensive renovation in late 2016 that updated all of the hotel's public spaces and rooms. The hotel's design blends elements of its old-world roots such as the beautiful architectural molding found throughout the entire property with contemporary styling and amenities. Royal blue carpeting, wall coverings, furniture and accent pieces provide visually stunning and inviting decor. The hotel's location draws many guests doing business with Congressional offices as well as those wishing to be near the city's historic Capitol Hill neighborhood. The attached Dubliner Irish Pub and Restaurant has live music nightly and is always buzzing with hotel guests and other patrons, which has led many previous guests to recommend requesting a higher floor when booking to avoid possible noise issues.

Location

Just blocks from the U.S. Capitol, Union Station, and the National Mall

Location is one the Phoenix Park Hotel's biggest draws. It sits on the northwest edge of Washington D.C.'s historic Capitol Hill neighborhood -- just four blocks from the U.S. Capitol and the adjacent Supreme Court and Library of Congress buildings. It is also an easy 10- to 15-minute walk from the east end of the National Mall, which is where you'll find the National Gallery of Art, U.S. Botanic Garden, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and National Archives Union Station is located just across the street from the hotel. Travel to or from Reagan National Airport takes 15 to 20 minutes without traffic, while it takes anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour or more to reach BWI or Dulles.

Rooms

Stylish, with generously sized bathrooms, plus amenities like free Wi-Fi and robes

The 149 rooms and suites at the Phoenix Park Hotel were completely renovated in late 2016. All of the standard rooms were given a contemporary style with new hard-surface flooring, open closets, and platform beds with plush pillow-top mattresses. Bathrooms include spacious vanities, lighted mirrors, and marble tiling, as well as walk-in showers (some units have bathtubs). Soothing royal blue, white, and silver palettes add to the overall sharp look. Amenities include 43-inch HDTVs, alarm clock radios with Bluetooth-enabled speakers, laptop-size safes, mini-fridges, compact movable work tables, lounge chairs, robes, and free Wi-Fi. However, coffeemakers are noticeably absent. The majority of rooms are moderately sized (270 to 350 square feet); however, there are a few Queen Superior Rooms that are tiny, coming in at only 175 to 195 square feet. The hotel's three sophisticated Penthouse Suites and three bi-level suites are each individually designed with custom-made furniture and a variety of additional amenities such as separate dining rooms, studies, gas fireplaces, and/or terraces.

Features

A renowned Irish pub and restaurant, fitness center, and basic business services

More than 40 years old, the Dubliner Irish Pub and Restaurant is a Capitol Hill institution that has seen many U.S. presidents visit for a pint or two. It's attached to the Phoenix Park Hotel, with direct access for guests. In addition, it provides room service during its normal business hours, which unfortunately does not include overnight service. The hotel's other significant features include a small fitness center with modern cardio equipment, strength-training machines, and free weights; basic business services including free printing; and daily coffee and tea service in the lobby lounge. There's also 5,000 square feet of available meeting space that's commonly used for political events. The hotel's only parking option is valet service at the typical high price common among D.C. hotels.
