La Posada Hotel

Scene

A historic hotel with modern Southwest character

Built in 1930 and designed by famed Southwest architect Mary Colter, this former Fred Harvey hotel was the last built by the Santa Fe Railroad. Restored in the 1990s, it is now a historic landmark with local art and bright colors throughout. Beams are painted a pale turquoise and ceilings range from lovely wood to red, orange, yellow, and blue paint. Rounded archways, wood cabinets, and stained glass add to the antique yet modern look, and unique feeling. Photographs of famous visitors line the hallways and there are local art exhibits within the hotel; there are no elevators, though. Free coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are available in the gift shop in the morning and free ice water and apples are offered in the afternoon. The Arizona Daily Sun newspaper is free at the front desk, but other papers cost a fee. Outside, there is a lovely green terrace with seating and a few fountains in addition to a large backyard where guests can bring pets. The artistic and architectural features here draw guests who are interested in design as well as Southwestern history.

Rooms

Large yet cozy and warm, with distinctively Southwest features

Rooms at La Posada Hotel are big yet cozy with clay-colored tile or wood floors, gorgeous wood or metal bed frames, brightly colored or metallic art, and warm terra cotta-shaded paint. Some include cozy seating areas with leather couches, balconies overlooking the lawns, or fireplaces. All have TVs -- many are flat-screen. Bathrooms stand out with beautiful colored tiles, reflecting the hotel's Southwestern crafts-oriented aesthetic; however some are showing wear and tear, and the raised jetted tubs in some bathrooms can be difficult to get into and out of. Mini-fridges are available upon request and guests can use the hotel kitchen refrigerator if needed. There are no phones in the rooms and even though there is free Wi-Fi, the signal may be weak or non-existent depending on a room's distance from the lobby. Some guests have been disturbed by loud train noise.
