This tiny family-run bed-and-breakfast is nestled amid gardens, citrus groves, and vineyards high in the mountains above Positano, and a short walk from quaint Montepertuso and the Path of the Gods. Mamma Rosa only has two rooms, both with breathtaking sea views, simple yet elegant decor, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and private bathrooms in the hallway. There are 220 steps to climb from the road to the property, but most guests find that the views, the warm hosts, and the delicious homemade breakfast make it worth the effort.

Casa Cuccaro B&B is a small family-run property in Nocelle, a quiet hamlet on the terraced hillside offering sweeping views over Positano. This value property is a bit difficult to reach and potential guests should be comfortable climbing steep inclines on narrow staircases and ancient streets. These same attributes makes it popular with hikers, and dozens of trails throughout the Lattari Mountains start right here. Its five simple rooms have en-suite bathrooms and balconies with sea views that are rivaled only by the views from the lovely rooftop terrace. It's worth comparing with the nearby B&B Mamma Rosa Positano, which lacks the en-suite bathrooms, but offers homemade breakfast and dinner. 

The 10-room Hotel Reginella is a boutique value property located in the center of Positano close to shops, restaurants, and the beach. Rooms are simple, clean, and spacious, and some have incredible views of the town and sea from furnished balconies. Some rooms are Old-World elegant, while others look a little more basic. As a budget hotel, there are no extras aside from a free continental breakfast and a bar, but the views and location -- as well as the rates -- are hard to beat for this expensive town. Hotel Villa Bellavista, another value property, has a small pool and a restaurant, but its location is less convenient.

The three-pearl Hotel - Albergo California Positano is light on features, but it offers magnificent views over the pastel-dotted hillsides and Mediterranean Sea throughout. Though the 15 rooms are basic to the point that they might seem bare, all have gorgeous vistas from private balconies or terraces. They also come with small flat-screen TVs, minibars, hairdryers, and air-conditioning. There are no pool or gym facilities, and the only meal served is a free continental breakfast. Still, a five-minute walk from the center, it provides an ideal base to explore the town and Amalfi coast. Guests looking for a pool and spa might want to check out the nearby Hotel Marincanto.

Perched above the charming town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast, B&B Casa Nilde is known for the hospitality of the family that runs it: they go above and beyond to make stays special. With only six rooms, the three-pearl property is small, but each room is cheerful and contemporary, and has a balcony with a gorgeous view out to the ocean. Rooms have flat-screen TVs, kettles, and mini-fridges stocked with free water -- which might be needed at the end of the day, as the stairs going to and from the property number in the 600s. That being said, it's possible to walk the road back up or take a bus stopping outside the property. Travelers wanting something on the water and quiet should consider Hotel Puppetto, set on a quiet pebble beach about a 15-minute walk from Positano's center. 

Hotel Savoia is a mid-range property that has been managed by the same family for the past three generations. The hotel is conveniently located on a central main road, making it reachable by car -- rare for Positano. The 39 elegant guest rooms are tastefully decorated, and many of them have balconies or terraces with scenic views of the sea and mountains -- though they lack in-room Wi-Fi. (Wi-Fi is available in the lounge and reception area.) There is no on-site restaurant, but a free breakfast is served, and drinks and light snacks are available from the bar. Room rates are competitive for the location, and the hotel offers excellent value, but travelers could compare prices with the Best Western-affiliated Positano Art Hotel Pasitea.

Located in the popular Amalfi town of Positano, Hotel La Bougainville is a 16-room property close to the town center and within walking distance to the beach. Low on features, but a good base to explore the region from, the hotel is a decent mid-range place to rest your head at night. Rooms are cute and colorful, though the lower-tier units are tiny and have small windows. Each comes with a flat-screen TV, minibar, safe, and hairdryer. Having a car is recommended here, though parking is only available off-site for a hefty fee. Guests wanting somewhere with a little more to offer might look into the Hotel Eden Roc, a three-and-a-half-pearl property in Positano that has a spa and wine-tasting evenings. 

Perched on Positano's highest point, the mid-range Conca d'Oro offers spectacular views of the Amalfi Coast below. Most of its 42 spacious guest rooms have balconies or terraces that overlook the sea. But there's a price to pay for these exceptional vistas: Guests must climb 100-odd steps to reach the hotel from the town, a climb some may find challenging. The hotel's restaurant provides a fantastic setting for romantic candlelit dinners on its terrace, and the outdoor hot tub offers panoramic views. A cold breakfast buffet and Wi-Fi are included in rates. The beach is about a 10-minute descent down the steps, while the town center is about a 15-minute walk from the property. Travelers looking for a hotel that doesn't require as much of a climb could consider the Hotel Villa Gabrisa located on one of Positano's main roads.

The main draws of the upper-middle-range Hotel Posa Posa is its impressive outdoor spaces and lovely views of the ocean from its rooms and restaurant patio. While its 24 rooms are classic, they're not necessarily posh, and can be a disappointment for travelers expecting four-pearl accommodations, as advertised. Still, all come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. A restaurant, a rooftop deck with a hydromassage pool and lounge chairs, and a breakfast buffet that's included in the rates round out the features. Most hotels here are similar to one another, but travelers could consider the Hotel Palazzo Murat as an alternative -- it throws in a free boat tour, too.

Completely renovated in 2014, this historic, 19th-century hotel is a well-decorated, three-pearl property with seven apartment-style units. Room are beautiful and equipped with kitchens, but the best part are the views from furnished terraces of the sea and colorful buildings of Positano. Unfortunately, there are no restaurant, pool, or wellness facilities on-site. Overall, it's a great base for exploring Positano and the Amalfi Coast, though the number of stairs, or, alternatively, long walks, involved might be challenging for those with mobility issues and without cars. Those who are looking to spend most of their time on the beach might find a waterfront property more convenient -- the Covo Dei Saraceni is along the beach and has more amenities. 

Perched on the side of a vertical cliff high above the Mediterranean, this 20-room no-frills boutique draws couples and families with stunning sea views from rooms and common spaces. The property is bare bones in terms of amenities, but it does have a cute rooftop restaurant that serves traditional regional cuisine, and a tiny pool that is mostly in the shade. Additionally, Villa Bellavista in near two small rocky beaches, but note that they can only be accessed via hundreds of steep steps. Clean, airy rooms have basic decor and amenities, but most feature balconies with expansive vistas.  

One of the cheapest hotels in Positano, at Hotel Royal Positano, what you pay for is what you get. The mid-range, 77-room property is crying out for a renovation, and the on-site restaurant varies in quality, but if you can look past threadbare carpets and dated rooms, then it's worth it to put the money elsewhere (like restaurants in town). However, it's well suited for families, and a bus to and from town lets guests easily escape the 400-step stair to and from the town. Those looking for a bit more elegance (and fewer stairs) should consider the four-pearl Hotel Buca di Bacco, which is close to the town's shopping and dining.
