The Driskill

The 189-room Driskill Hotel sets a new standard for historic hotels. The hotel was built in 1886 and beautifully restored, and the gleaming marble floors, towering columns, and stained-glass ceilings evoke a bygone era. Tasteful, elegant rooms follow suit with designer furnishings, towering ceilings with crown moldings, brocade carpeting, and pretty bathrooms with black marble floors and counters (but shower/tub combos). They're a bit small, though -- but that's to be expected in a historic downtown hotel. There's no pool or other on-site amenities besides a nice fitness center and small massage room, but the location in the heart of Austin's famous Sixth Street entertainment district is prime.

AT&T Hotel and Conference Center
1900 University Ave University of Texas at Austin

The 276-room AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center is an upscale hotel geared toward business travelers who come for the extensive meeting spaces and convenient location on the University of Texas campus. Features include a small pool, two on-site restaurants, a 24-hour fitness center, and a business center, but there’s no spa. Renovated in 2016, comfortable rooms have an elegant design with Texas flair, as well as large flat-screen Ts with DVD players, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Unfortunately, some visitors have reported noise issues. Guests are just a five-minute drive to downtown sights and bars. Those wanting to be nearer the action may prefer the contemporary Hilton Garden Inn Austin Downtown/Convention Center.
