Best Kid-Friendly Hotels in France’s Basque Country

Hotels in the French Basque Country are famously elegant. These seven hotels have style to spare, don’t get us wrong — but they have kid-centric qualities, as well, like babysitting services, seasonal children’s pools, game rooms, kids’ menus, available cribs, and rooms designed for families.

1

Grand Hôtel Thalasso & Spa

Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

The luxurious Grand Hotel Thalasso & Spa designed for leisure travelers, and while it attracts its share of couples, families are welcomed with a seasonal kids' club (extra fee), kids' menus, kids' spa treatments, babysitting, and other extras. Nearby beach clubs are also available for kids in the summer. All of the hotel's 56 rooms have individual AC, comfy pillow-top mattresses, electronic safes, and 46-inch flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. Pets are allowed for an extra fee. Wi-Fi throughout is free.

2

Hotel du Palais

Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

This oceanfront luxury hotel with a rich history attracts well-heeled couples to its elegant Second Empire interiors, spa, and Michelin-starred restaurant, but families with children can benefit from the pool and seasonal children's pool, playground, putting green, and abundance of large rooms. Rooms start at 269 square feet, while suites offer at least 538 square feet of floor space. All 153 rooms come with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with satellite and premium channels and pay-per-view movies. Minibars are filled with high-end drinks and snacks. Only higher-category rooms have separate tubs and showers. Rooms and public spaces at the hotel are entirely non-smoking.

3

Hotel Parc Victoria

Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

The upscale Hotel Parc Victoria, within walking distance of the beach, appeals to couples and families alike. Built at the end of the 19th century, the property is mostly Art Deco in style. Its 20 rooms vary in size and decor, but all are spacious and refined, with modern comforts that include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and minibars. A large Family Suite comes with two bathrooms (one with a shower/tub combo) and ample outdoor space. Guests can start their day with a buffet breakfast (for a fee) at the garden-themed restaurant with views of the outdoor heated pool. Family-friendly features include game room with foosball, pool, and chess, and there's even a playroom for infants and young children. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and there’s on-site parking for a fee.

4

Hotel Villa Koegui Biarritz

Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Belle Epoque style abounds all over the Biarritz area, so the upper-middle-range Villa Koegui stands out as a contemporary alternative. Situated in a quiet residential neighborhood close to area attractions and the beach, the hotel offers 15 modern, minimalist rooms, which range from stylish Classics (some with skylights) to a ground-floor suite with a separate bedroom, a pullout couch in the living room, and a large private patio. Safes, minibars, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and free Wi-Fi are standard issue in every category; ditto for the up-to-date tiled bathrooms, which have tubs or rainfall showers (the suite has both). Villa Koegui caters to families by offering kid-centric equipment (think cribs, cots, high chairs, and bottle warmers) in upper-category rooms; childcare from a certified nanny can be arranged as well. Guests can linger in the comfortable library-lounge or go alfresco on the pretty patio, but other facilities are noticeably missing, such as a pool, restaurant, and fitness center. Room and laundry service are available.

5

Hotel Saint-Julien

Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

An intimate atmosphere, tasteful decor, and tranquil setting make the 20-room Hotel Saint-Julien popular with couples, but families can appreciate the boutique hotel's Family Rooms, which have an additional single bed. (For families of more than three, there are interconnecting rooms.) All rooms have double beds, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs. Room sizes are fair for Biarritz, ranging from 180 square feet in Standard Rooms to 290 square feet in all other room categories. The hotel doesn't have many features, but it does offer secure parking on-site (at a fee), which is a big deal. Parking is a problem in Biarritz, particularly in peak summer season, and it’s rare to find a hotel with secure private parking spaces. Advance booking is recommended due to the high demand. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.

Hotel de l’Ocean – Biarritz

Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

This quaint and homey hotel sits on Place Sainte Eugenie, a picturesque seafront square. The sweeping La Grande Plage is a five-minute walk in one direction, with the tiny cove of Plage du Port Vieux in the other. The beach-chic hotel draws plenty of couples and a few families, most looking to avoid larger chain hotels and take advantage of the lovely location. The 26 cozy, beach-themed rooms are all individually designed, but air-conditioning and Wi-Fi are not consistent between rooms. Family Courtyard Rooms have mini-fridges and two separate rooms -- each with a flat-screen TV -- separated by a sliding door.

7

Hotel Cafe de Paris

Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

The Hotel Cafe de Paris Biarritz is an upscale boutique property with 19 rooms overlooking the gorgeous Grand Plage. Inspired by the SS Normandie (an iconic French luxury liner from the 1930s), the hotel has a vintage nautical look that is in keeping with its waterfront location. As its name suggests, food and beverages matter at Hotel Cafe de Paris Biarritz -- and the on-site restaurant and bar are major draws. The former uses premium ingredients to prepare refined French bistro fare and favorite Basque dishes. As you’d expect, fresh seafood factors prominently on the menu; for guests traveling en famille, there is a kid-friendly menu designed specifically for petits gourmands, too. In-room dining is available. Other hotel features include a 24-hour reception desk with helpful multilingual staff, concierge service, laundry/dry-cleaning service, and free Wi-Fi throughout.
