Bottom Line

This lovely property, a city escape just outside of town, is set on landscaped grounds and gardens that include hundred-year-old trees. While the upscale hotel is located in a rather unappealing industrial-like area off the ring road and not within walking distance of central Chiang Mai, it is quiet, and once inside the gates, a world of its own. The spacious rooms are decked out in northern Thai Lanna style, have plenty of amenities, and have private balconies and terraces. The elongated pool here runs through the entire grounds, and the good restaurant and several atmospheric bars, along with a pampering spa, help make up for the lack of places to go in the neighborhood. The hotel also runs a free shuttle to the Night Bazaar and downtown.

Oyster Hotel Review

Khum Phaya Resort & Spa, Centara Boutique Collection

Scene

Relaxed, serene, very casual, and a great spot for a city escape while in town

The scene at the Khum Phaya Resort & Spa is chilled out and private. People come here seeking an escape from the city, and this is one of those rare city resorts in which one doesn't really need to ever leave the property. It's a lovely spot for strolling around in the peaceful surroundings, with lush, shady gardens. The elongated pool is a major feature here, and offers plenty of private space to relax and take things slow. Though the hotel draws mostly couples, families may appreciate the safe, enclosed environs where kids can run around. Despite the elegant northern Thai Lanna designs and architecture, the emphasis is on casual here, as most folks at the hotel are either lounging by the pool, relaxing in the garden, getting spa treatments, or strolling around the green surroundings. Party animals and night owls probably won't enjoy this spot, but those seeking a peaceful escape will be very much at home.

Location

Outside of town in a rather unappealing area, yet extremely quiet and a real escape while on the premises

The hotel is located well out of the city center, across the river and off the major Ring Road in what feels like an industrial estate. The neighborhood doesn't really have restaurants, bars, or other activities to enjoy. Yet this shouldn't damper anyone's visit, as inside the property, things are serene and attractive, and the resort runs a free shuttle to the Night Bazaar, downtown, and tourist attractions if anyone feels the urge to leave.

Features

Fabulous elongated swimming pool with plenty of private space, a well-equipped fitness center, pampering spa, and some relaxed bars

The swimming pool is one of the resort's prime features; it's elongated and runs the length of the rooms and gardens, with plenty of space for privacy. There is also a big fitness center with a wide variety of machines, and mounted flat-screen TVs. The extremely elegant Cenvaree Spa does signature programs and treatments. The resort only has one restaurant, a lovely space where Thai and international cuisine is served, and there is also a northern "kantoke" banquet dinner restaurant that adjoins the property. There are also some very atmospheric bars: a swim-up bar in the pool, and another that sits next to a waterfall in the garden.
