The apartment-style Macaris Suites and Spa is a pleasant property with contemporary, albeit generic and a bit bland decor. Marble floors, earth tones, and art installations on every floor, including replicas of historic relics. Antique pieces in the reading lounge, collected by the owner himself, add further historical flavor. The hotel’s multi-tiered structure is set into a hill above Rethymnon’s main road, allowing for panoramic views along the northern coastline in many areas of the hotel, including from all apartments. An absence of evening entertainment and daily activities, and setting away from the road, leads to a tranquil atmosphere. Travelers are a mix of couple and families. 

The hotel is situated on a hillside above Rethymnon’s busy main road, allowing for a quiet setting. While there aren’t many shops or restaurants in the immediate area, it’s a quick two-minute walk down to the main street, and 12 minutes to the vibrant, charming old town, filled with countless restaurants, cafes, and nightlife. It’s a short, six-minute walk to the nearest beach, but travelers have warned that it's dirty. Prettier, swimmable beaches can be reached in seven to 10 minutes by car. The historic Venetian fortress is about a 20-minute walk, while the lively city of Chania is roughly an hour drive west. Heraklion and its airport are a 75-minute drive east.

Apartments at this hotel are clean, contemporary, and spacious, though a bit bland in terms of decor. Nevertheless, excellent amenities include comfortable beds, separate living spaces with sofa beds and flat-screen TVs, dining tables, and well-equipped kitchens with ovens, stovetops, full-size fridges, coffeemakers, and cookware. All units have large, sea-facing balconies furnished with additional dining tables and cushy chairs. Modern bathrooms have jetted tubs with integrated showers, hairdryers, and toiletries. Upgraded rooms have hot tubs on the balconies and higher-floor rooms have better vistas.

A good array of features here includes an outdoor pool with a separate kiddy pool, adjacent bar serving drinks and snacks, and cushioned loungers under umbrellas. For additional relaxation, an adults-only spa has a free-to-use indoor pool and hot tub, plus a steam room and treatments for additional charges. A small gym has strength-training and cardio machines. 

All rates include free, outstanding buffet breakfasts with a variety of fare that includes homemade cakes and pastries, plus Greek yogurt and locally produced honey. The a la carte restaurant has alfresco seating with sea views, and it serves local and international cuisine (half-board plans are available). During summer, the rooftop terrace opens with a large space for lounging and dining, where drinks and light bites are served. 

A mini-market sells sundries and snacks. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and parking on the street outside is free.
