Riva Yacht Harbour Hotel
Obala Riva 27

There are 54 stylish guest rooms at this upper-middle-range property set right on Hvar’s harbor. It’s an excellent location for those wanting to be in the heart of Hvar's old town -- the area is busy day and night with tourists and boats coming into the port. The hotel is a popular spot for evening drinks and dinner on the outdoor terrace. It's a trendy place to watch the sun set and free breakfast is served there in the mornings too, with everything from fresh fruit to cooked options available. Rooms can be a little tight, but but they are chic and modern and have free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs.

Hotel Podstine
Put Podstina 11

Hotel Podstine is a three-and-a-half pearl charmer with direct ocean access near the town of Hvar. The 50 rooms are contemporary and feature flat-screen TVs and minibars; some have balconies and wonderful ocean views. However, tiny stall showers and twin beds pushed together make them less romantic than the rest of the hotel. Guests can enjoy the chic pool, relaxing spa, small gym, outdoor restaurant with ocean views, and three bars -- one of which offers smoothies. Travelers should check Hvar Spa Hotel for similar amenities and a location closer to the city center.

Admiral Grand Hotel
Rudera Boskovica, 13

Completely rebuilt in 2008, the upscale Admiral Grand Hotel has a sleek and modern look plus a prime beachside location. Its 241 contemporary rooms are rather bland, but they're equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, free Wi-Fi, and sleek marble bathrooms; many also have balconies overlooking the sea or the mountains. The hotel offers a host of features: Indoor and outdoor swimming pools and spa with a sauna, Turkish bath, and whirlpool, as well as a fitness center, sports facilities, and even an nightclub. A breakfast buffet is included in most rates, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, even on the beach. Rates here are cheaper than in Dubrovnik, but travelers looking to stay somewhere closer can consider Hotel Kazbek, which is located in a beautifully renovated 16th-century aristocratic villa, but it doesn't offer as many amenities.

Hotel Osmine
Grgurici 100

The Osmine is a budget all-inclusive-only hotel alongside the beach by the same name, a five-minute drive from Slano village. There are beautiful sea views, a seasonal outdoor pool, and beach sunbeds -- but decor is dated, rooms are basic (though they have air-conditioning, TVs, and safes), and entertainment is underwhelming. The buffets are decent enough, but drinks are of poor quality, and guests describe the advertised all-inclusive as more like full-board. There’s free use of bicycles, kayaks, and paddle boats. Travelers with mobility difficulties may struggle with steps here. In Slano proper, the similarly priced Admiral Grand Hotel has up-to-date rooms and comprehensive facilities.

The Westin Zagreb
Ulica Isidora Krshnjavoga 1

The Westin Zagreb is a 349-room, three-and-a-half-pearl hotel in the center of Zagreb near the Mimara Museum. Interiors throughout are well kept, but dated, and rooms lack any wow factor. Those on higher floors offer great city views, and some include amenities like Samsung tablets. The hotel has a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, a bar, and a cafe off the lobby, and is geared toward business travelers, the hotel has 13 multifunctional meeting rooms and a ballroom. The health facilities, which include a huge gym, an indoor pool, sauna, and steam rooms, do add a bit of value here, though the hotel is underwhelming for the brand. Travelers seeking to stay a bit closer to Old Town might want to check out the jazzier Hotel Dubrovnik.

Hotel Croatia
Vinogradska Cesta 20

Hotel Croatia is a family-run, budget option in downtown Zagreb, with 18 bright rooms that feature air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges. Room decor is a tad generic, the lobby is on the dated side, and there are limited public spaces. There's a good free continental breakfast buffet, and the lobby bar and terrace is open all day, but there’s no other meal service. Located a four-minute walk from the Dr. F. Tudmana tram stop, and just out of walking distance from a number of attractions, the hotel offers good value compared to other nearby properties -- there's also reliable free Wi-Fi, and free secure parking. As an alternative, Hotel Dubrovnik is within easy walking distance of top attractions, and has an in-house American restaurant plus a cafe, but rates are a fair bit higher.

Esplanade Zagreb Hotel
Mihanoviceva 1

Dating back to 1925, the Esplanade Zagreb Hotel is a historic Zagreb landmark and the best-known hotel in the city. Located within walking distance of the train station, this independent luxury hotel with 208 rooms and suites is the capital’s most opulent place to stay. Rooms, with elegant, classical decor and marble bathrooms, reflect the tony atmosphere found elsewhere, but a few rooms are in need of renovation and show signs of wear. With all its glitz, it actually offers good value for a five-star category hotel with very reasonable room rates. However, it doesn't have a swimming pool, something other nearby five-pearl properties like The Westin Zagreb and Sheraton Zagreb Hotel have, at very similar rates.

Hotel 9
Avenija Marina Drzhica 9

Hotel 9, a small upscale boutique property spread over three floors, is located on a busy road across from the main bus station, about a mile from the city center. Built in 2013, the hotel is an architectural and decorative work of art, with lots of glass and shiny surfaces. The 20 stylish rooms, which include smart TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi, follow either a white, silver, or gold color scheme (some might find the decor too blingy). Grand Luxury King rooms are spacious with big bathrooms, while Luxury King rooms are much smaller. Hotel 9, with its high-end boutique cachet and free breakfast, delivers good value when compared with other hotels of the same category in the area, but for travelers seeking a more central location, the Arcotel Allegra may be a better choice -- not only for its location but for its extra amenities, such as a restaurant, spa, and wellness center.

Hotel Dubrovnik
Ulica Ljudevita Gaja 1

Situated right on Zagreb's main square, the historic Hotel Dubrovnik is within walking distance of all the top area attractions, like St. Mark's Church. The three-pearl property has a restaurant that serves American fare, along with a lobby bar and cafe. Other features include a fitness room, 10 meeting rooms, and a business center. Its 222 guest rooms vary; some are located in a newer wing of the hotel and have been more recently renovated, while others are a bit dated, though decor is pleasant and amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. For something more stylish, travelers might want to check out the boutique Hotel 9, though it's outside of the city center.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Zagreb
Ulica Grada Vukovara 269a

The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Zagreb is a four-pearl property located in the business district of Zagreb. Opened in 2012, the property has a modern feel and more stylish decor than some other hotels in the chain. The 152 rooms and suites are attractive and functional and feature minibars, flat-screen TVs, and floor-to-ceiling windows. There's a trendy restaurant and bar serving buffet breakfast (for a fee) and international dishes for lunch and dinner. Other features include an indoor pool and a hot tub in a glassy room overlooking the city. Rates also include access to the gym and wellness center. This property is located about 15 minutes by tram from the historic center. The Palace Hotel has a more dated look, but is within a five-minute walk of Upper Town.
