Bottom Line

The 200-room Avlida Hotel is a reasonably priced, two-and-a-half-pearl property situated across from the Tomb of the Kings. Rooms are quite dated, but equipped with flat-screen TVs, plus some have balconies facing the sea. The hotel has a large pool and there are plenty of loungers to soak up the sun. Casual buffet fare is served in the restaurant, while four bars offer cocktails. Family-friendly activities include a kids’ club, a play area, and a game terrace. The hotel also has an indoor pool and a spacious gym. Travelers might want to compare with the Queen's Bay Hotel, which has similar style, but is right by the beach and has comparable rates.

Avlida Hotel

Scene

Family-friendly hotel with dated interiors and budget resort amenities

The Avlida Hotel offers reasonably priced rooms and a location that’s a good starting point for exploring the Tombs of Kings and other sights. Bougainvillea, Greek sculptures, and fountains at the front of the hotel remind guests that they're in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, but landscaping is a bit overgrown. This sort of forgotten-about vibe continues inside, where interiors are classic -- if a bit dated -- but clean. Green and pink upholstered sofas provide comfy seating in the lobby, which features Greek sculptures and paintings. Corridors are dimly lit. According to the hotel, the last renovation was completed in 2013, but it doesn’t feel modern at all. In fact, despite its upscale aspirations, the look and atmosphere are distinctly budget. With that in mind, it's a pleasant enough place to crash, though expectations should be managed. The property mostly attracts budget-minded families with kids as well as couples, though with its optional all-inclusive rates it can get a little lively from time to time. There also tend to be lots of cats about, which can be a nuisance to some guests.

Location

Across from the Tombs of Kings, a 15-minute walk to center of town

The hotel is situated on Tombs of the Kings Road, a four-lane street that isn't the most scenic, although there is a bike path. The Tombs of Kings that dates back to 300 B.C. is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, though reaching it will require walking across the busy highway. The property is a decent jumping-off point for exploring Paphos, though it's a 15-minute walk to the center of town. Expect a five-minute drive to the beach, while the port is about a 10-minute drive away. Guests can use the free outdoor parking, while those without cars can take the bus, which passes by the hotel. It’s a 15-minute bus trip to Coral Bay. The Paphos Archaeological Park, the Kings Avenue Mall, the House of Dionysos, and the Medieval Castle of Paphos are all within a 10- to 15-minute drive. It’s a 25-minute drive to the Paphos International Airport.

Rooms

Classic rooms with basic conveniences and balconies -- but in need of a refresh

The hotel’s 200 rooms are classically designed and generally well-kept, though they're a bit dated and could use a refresh. Rooms feature old-school details like wallpaper trim, industrial carpeting, seaside paintings, bland mid-tone wooden furniture and headboards, wall sconces, and patterned sofas. There's an abundance of peach or salmon tones and blue in lower-category rooms, further exacerbating the dated effect. Higher-category rooms -- like the Suite that we visited -- have tile floors and white walls that make them look marginally more fresh, though they're still fairly outdated. All rooms have balconies; some overlook the sea, while others overlook the grounds, pool, or have partial sea views. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi, though safes incur an additional fee. Expect to pay a refundable deposit for mini-fridges. Rooms range in size from Single Rooms to Doubles, Family Rooms, and Family Studios, which can sleep up to six people. Suites offer separate living rooms. Simple, white- or gray-tiled bathrooms have shower/tub combos, plus towels and some toiletries are provided. Some guests have noted ants in their rooms

Features

Outdoor pools and a sundeck, live entertainment, and buffet dining and bars

The Avlida Hotel’s best feature is its lagoon pool with waterfalls, a splash area, and a hot tub. Blue lounge chairs line the surrounding deck, and there's an elevated area lined with more sunbeds. The indoor pool isn’t as popular and many complain that it looks neglected. Those looking to relax can hang out in the sauna or get a massage. The fitness center is spacious and includes weight equipment, free weights, and limited cardio options.

The live fire show at George Bar is a particular hit among guests. Other activities include bingo and karaoke. There are three other bars -- including a pool snack bar -- at the hotel as well. Angelo Bar in the lobby has a relaxed ambience with a TV lounge, a billiard table, darts, and a pinball machine. Adonis Restaurant is casual, with large windows that face the gardens. All-inclusive rates are available, and the quality of food on offer is average. Room service is available.

Travelers with kids often stay here since there’s a small kids’ club, a play area with astroturf, and a game terrace. Other on-site activities include everything from tennis to water aerobics. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi throughout. Three meeting spaces are available for gatherings of up to 150 people.
