Bottom Line

The mid-range, 95-room Aqua Soleil Hotel & Mineral Water Spa is basically a renovated motel made more upscale. It has limited curb appeal, but once inside the property guests will find that the grounds are attractively landscaped, featuring desert flora, a pool and spa filled with mineral water, and fire pit seating areas. The pricing of the hotel is reasonable, but the spa is a bit pricey. The rooms are clean and have colorful decor accents; some are even a bit stylish. The Desert Hot Springs location has nice views of the San Bernadino foothills, but the town itself doesn't have much to offer beyond a few chain restaurants; travelers come here primarily for the mineral waters. Overall, the property has a slight edge over the competing Miracle Springs Hotel and Spa.

Oyster Hotel Review

Aqua Soleil Hotel & Mineral Water Spa

Scene

Relaxing mountain spa retreat

The front of the hotel is not very appealing, though the backdrop of the San Bernadino foothills is scenic. Those keeping an eye out for a spa retreat might not think to stop here, as it looks more like the motel it used to be than a hotel. But once guests get inside, it's inviting. The grounds around the pool are attractive, with a mineral water pool, palm trees, and fire pit with a seating area. The lobby is modern and colorful, with orange, green, and purple seating, a red shag rug, and yellow and periwinkle accent walls. The clientele is primarily couples, though there is a smaller contingent of families.

Location

Close to Palm Springs and parks

The hotel and spa is located just a 10-minute drive off the 10 freeway. The small town location in Desert Hot Spring, CA, makes for a quiet environment. The hotel is located at the base of the San Bernadino mountains, and the area right around the hotel is a rather barren-looking desert area, but that's typical for the geography of the region. It's right one one of the town's main roads, and there are a few fast food options and a gas station right nearby (it's possible to walk). For sightseeing, it is about a 45-minute drive to Joshua Tree National Park, 20 minutes to Palm Springs, and for those who like hiking, 15 minutes to Coachella Nature Preserve.

Rooms

Clean, with colorful (and even stylish) accents

The rooms are decorated with a colorful and stylish modern look. Decor varies from room to room -- it's a bit bolder in some rooms, such as the Double Queen Room we saw with gray and green striped wallpaper accents -- but all are clean, with fresh carpeting and carefully selected artwork. There are roomier suites available, including the Soleil Suite with a private indoor mineral water pool. All rooms have either a couch or large chair, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Amenities can improve with room category; for example, the Deluxe Queen Room had a single-cup coffeemaker and alarm clock, while the Soleil Suite has a larger coffeemaker and HoMedics Soundspa (with eight peaceful relaxation sounds). The bathrooms have an attractive tile shower but no tub. There is also no iron or ironing board, and the wall air-conditioners and external hallways with cheap stucco point to the property's more modest roots. Some rooms have balconies which overlook the desert and mountains.

Features

The mineral pools are the big draw.

The mineral water pools (indoor and out) and whirlpool are the biggest draw at this hotel, and the outdoor pool with 88-degree water is open all year, as is the smaller jetted whirlpool with 104-degree water. Movies are screened by the pool on Fridays and Saturdays, weather permitting. The spa offers massages and other treatments, but is on the pricey side. There is a spacious sun deck to relax on, a pool table, and a dartboard. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner, and has an extensive menu of hamburger and hot dog dishes. There are daily happy hour specials at the bar. A DVD library is available, and guests are allowed to bring a pet for a small fee.
