Bottom Line

Apex Waterloo Place Hotel is an upscale hotel located in Edinburgh's Old Town -- on the east end of Princes Street. The 148 spacious rooms, suites, and family suites feature stylish decor, with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi, though noise in the area can be an issue on weekends. Elliot's Bar and Restaurant serves traditional Scottish cuisine, including a popular traditional Scottish breakfast (for an additional fee). Guests have free use of the indoor swimming pool, sauna, and gym, and treatments are available at PURE Spa and Beauty. It's worth comparing rates at Apex Grassmarket Hotel (within the same hotel chain) for many of the same features and similarly contemporary feel, at a slightly lower price point.

Apex Waterloo Place Hotel

Scene

Stylish and contemporary, with loads of features, draws all types of travelers

While Apex Waterloo Place Hotel looks like any other traditional Edinburgh hotel from the outside, the inside features a modern, contemporary design, with an urban edge. The decor is stylish, with eye-catching accents -- colorful carpets, red feature chairs, simple chandeliers, and classic artwork. The hotel's restaurant has a slightly more traditional feel, with cornices on the ceilings, along with Georgian windows and fireplace. Elliot's Bar and Restaurant serves traditional Scottish cuisine, and has a wide selection of wines, cocktails, and spirits -- including hand-picked Scottish whiskies. It's a fine place to relax with a drink, and draws a mix of hotel guests and other tourists. Due to its central location -- East of Princes Street, and within walking distance to Waverley Train Staion -- Apex Waterloo Place Hotel is ideal for both leisure and business travelers.

Location

Central Old Town location -- a six-minute walk to Waverley Station

While nothing in Edinburgh is ever too far away, Apex Waterloo Place Hotel has a particularly central location. Located East of Princes Street, guests have direct access to popular Edinburgh Street, which is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, and vibrant nightlife. Waverley Station -- the city's main train station -- is a quick six-minute walk from the hotel. The famous Royal Mile is an eight-minute walk, along with Old Town, Edinburgh Playhouse, and Carlton Hill. The Edinburgh Castle is eight minutes away by cab. There's bus stop right outside the hotel, as well as the St. Andrew Square Tram Stop a five-minute walk away. It's a 25-minute drive to Edinburgh's airport.

Rooms

Stylish and contemporary, with air-conditioning, mini-fridge, and flat-screen TVs

Guest rooms at Apex Waterloo Place Hotel are decorated in simple, contemporary furniture with an upscale homey vibe. All rooms feature striped carpeted flooring, feature walls, patterned curtains, classic artwork, a brightly colored chair, and fun patterned bedspreads and pillows -- all leaving the room with a slightly mismatched feel. The hotel offers a mix of rooms and suites, some of which can fit small families, and standard amenities include air-conditioning, minibars (with free still and sparkling water), 42-inch flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, electric kettles, and work desks. The Suites have extra amenities such as DVD players, iPod docks, Nespresso coffee machines, free snacks, and additional space in separate living areas. Unfortunately, due to its central location, noise from nearby nightlife is often until late, particularly on weekends. Bathrooms are adequately sized and modern, and include stall showers and/or bathtubs as well as premiumElemis toiletries.
