Lassi Hotel
Kefalonia Lassis

This 89-room hotel has a friendly atmosphere and simple amenities for travelers seeking a quiet setting within reach of Cephalonia’s capital city and the coast. The budget-friendly rates here are a draw, as are the relaxing pool and proximity to several pretty beaches. A good free breakfast and snacks at the bar round out offerings. Rooms are clean and cozy, albeit bland, with flat-screen TVs and kettles, plus some have kitchenettes. Separate charges for air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and safes add up, but guests who can do without these amenities appreciate the savings. San Lorenzo Village has a contemporary vibe and more amenities -- particularly for kids -- with an easier walk into Lassi, but the price reflects the difference.

Dionysos Village Resort
Haravontas

The 56-room, mid-range Dionysos Village Resort is a laid-back hotel with breathtaking views that lures leisure travelers -- mostly couples -- who don’t mind the steep uphill walk to reach the property (or have transportation). The big pool is a highlight, but other amenities are undersized -- the advertised spa is just a massage room and a sauna, and the gym is tiny. Although the breakfast buffet is lackluster and generally only appreciated by guests who get it for free, dinner is excellent. Rooms vary from dated and bland to fresh and relaxing, but all are modest and have mini-fridges and kettles. All rooms are sea-facing and have furnished outdoor spaces that capitalize on the view. It's worth comparing rates with the modern San Lorenzo Village, which has in-room kitchenettes.

Alti Santorini Suites
Caldera Megalohori

With just six suites, the adult-only, 2014-opened Alti Santorini Suites is a quiet, upper-middle-range property, calmly set between the villages of Pyrgos and Megalochori (both about a 15-minute walk). Caldera and Aegean Sea views are spectacular from private plunge pools and terraces, which all suites afford. Understated rooms also have elegant decor, rainfall showers, Nespresso machines, minibars, and bathrobes. There's no restaurant here, but free, room-delivered breakfasts come standard and other snacks and meals can be arranged, as can massages. There's little else to this small establishment, and note that pool privacy is often compromised (common for Santorini). For a family-friendly option that's less pricey, consider the Grand View Hotel

Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort, Santorini
Megalohori

Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort, Santorini is one of the only traditional five-pearl hotels on the island -- and it once hosted Angelina Jolie. The fact that it has space for three high end restaurants, a chic outdoor pool, Asian Spa, fitness center, 400-year-old wine cellar, helipad, and boutique shop is due to its unusual location in the ancient village of Megalochori. Guests trade caldera views for vineyard and distant Aegean Sea views, but the village is much more intimate than the tourist trappings of Oia and Fira. The resort offers a free shuttle to its private beach club. Though the main buildings are done in Cycladic style, the 46 villas and suites interiors are modern and many include private pools or whirlpools. For travelers who want luxury on the caldera in Oia, check rates at Mystique Luxury Collection Hotel but expect higher prices and you'll lose the beach club access.

Porto Skala Hotel & Village
Atsoupadon Skalas

The mid-range, 80-room Porto Skala Hotel & Village Resort is located across the street from a pebbly beach, and a seven-minute drive (or free shuttle ride) from Skala proper. Lovely grounds have lush greenery and beautiful flowers, but interiors fall short, featuring basic and dated decor throughout. Underwhelming guest rooms have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and furnished balconies with lovely views. Buffet meals receive positive reviews, and half-board and all-inclusive options are available. The sea-view pool area is spacious and has a poolside snack bar, plus there are a game room and playground for kids. Free Wi-Fi is limited to public areas, and it can be spotty. Aside from the beach, there isn't much within walking distance of the property. Sami Beach Hotel's location is more convenient for visitors who would like to explore the area on foot.

Apostolata Island Resort & Spa
Porou Skalas, Kafalonica

The upper-middle-range Apostolata Island Resort & Spa has a secluded position with gorgeous views of the sea, removed from Skala proper. Although the property falls below its advertised five-star rating, the hotel offers a good range of amenities. The 166 rooms have generic, underwhelming decor, but they come with sitting areas, bathrooms with showers and separate tubs, and furnished outdoor spaces -- some with sea views. A large ocean-view pool is lovely, plus there are expansive spa facilities, a buffet restaurant, Mediterranean a la carte eatery, and poolside snack bar. All-inclusive packages are available, but they don't include top-shelf liquor. Free shuttle to Poros and Skala are convenient, and a kiddy pool and playground are available for children. Families may prefer Apollonion Resort & Spa, which has a kids' club, game room, and bigger playground.

Kos Aktis Art Hotel
7 Leoforos Vasileos Georgiou

This stylish, mid-range seafront hotel is a 10-minute walk from the heart of Kos Town's harbor, tavernas, and dining, making it a great choice for couples looking for a three-pearl property near the center of the action or want somewhere close to onward travel to other islands. Design throughout is decidedly modern and minimalist, with lots of sea-inspired accents. All of the 42 rooms come with balconies that offer stunning views of the sea, as well as flat-screen TVs, free (albeit spotty) Wi-Fi, and kettles. The ocean access will be enough for most, but those who want a pool (and spa) will need to go to the sister hotel a 10-minute walk away. Guests who prefer everything in one spot can check out the stylish, four-pearl Pelagos Suites, though it's a 10-minute drive to Kos Town.

Diamond Deluxe Hotel
Lambi Beach

Across the street from the beach and a quick drive to Kos, the 110-room Diamond Deluxe Hotel is a romantic, four-pearl choice geared towards couples (there are activities for kids, too). Features include a stylish lagoon pool area, an upscale spa, a chic indoor pool, two elegant restaurants, three bars, and sports facilities. Luxe decor fills the rooms, all of which have balconies or terraces (some with sea views). However, there is a fee to use the gym, which is not the case at the nearby Aqua Blu Boutique Hotel and Spa, where guests can exercise as much as they want without worrying about extra fees.

Pelagos Suites Hotel & Spa
Lambi Beach

The four-pearl Pelagos Suites is one of those rare gems of a hotel that looks designed for discerning adults but unabashedly caters toward the whole family. Within the chic, minimalist resort complex are several Family Suites and a host of activities for children and teens, from waterslides to sports and playgrounds. Grown-ups are also kept in mind, with gorgeous pools, bars, great restaurant menu (if lacking in variety), and an excellent spa. Note that it's a 10-minute drive into town and the property's beach isn't the nicest to swim at. All of the 175 rooms are well-equipped and have outdoor space, though some are more modern than others. Couples who want an adult-only getaway should consider Aqua Blue Boutique Hotel + Spa, located across the road from a private sandy beach.

Aqua Blu Boutique Hotel Spa
Lambi Beach

The Aqua Blu Boutique Hotel + Spa is a romantic, adult-only spot on the northern tip of the island, right across the road from a gorgeous white-sand beach. It's one of the most highly rated hotels, not just on Kos, but in all of Greece, for its modern architecture, excellent restaurant, and luxurious suites with private balconies. Amenities are unsurprisingly high-end, especially in suites outfitted with gas fireplaces or private plunge pools. Not all the 53 rooms have great sea views though. There are a full spa, an outdoor pool and bar, and guests can get picnic baskets to take to the beach. It's worth comparing rates at the nearby Diamond Deluxe Hotel, another adult-only property with almost twice as many rooms.
