Beautiful Saigon Hotel
62 Bui Vien St., Dist. 1

Located right on the busy Bui Vien street in District One, the Beautiful Saigon Hotel is in the middle of Ho Chi Minh City’s backpackers’ area. This 22-room budget hotel is a step above the neighboring hostel digs. Superior Rooms are fairly spacious with pleasant, generic decor, while Standard Rooms are tiny, windowless, and largely unadorned. And all rooms have individually controlled AC, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, even (dated) desktop computers. The location is in easy walking distance to the popular Ben Thanh Market and many restaurants and shops. As an alternative, the Beautiful Saigon 3 Hotel, a sister hotel located in a quieter alleyway, is only a minute’s walk away.

Liberty Central Saigon Riverside Hotel
17 Ton Duc Thang Street, Dist 1

This modern city hotel offers an upscale stay in a central riverside location within walking distance of major attractions and corporate offices. Rooms are stylish and bright, with floor-to-ceiling windows (some offering panoramic river views), sleek glass-enclosed bathrooms, modern amenities, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel offers several dining options, a small but modern fitness center, and extensive meeting space. But the highlights here are the luxe spa and beautiful rooftop deck, complete with an infinity pool and bar. Just note that some guests have complained of poor soundproofing, and that the main bar can get a little loud in the evening.

Liberty Central Saigon Center
179 Le Thanh Ton St., District.1

Liberty Central Saigon Centre Hotel is an upscale spa property located just steps from the famous Ben Thanh market in Ho Chi Minh City. Popular primarily with tourists, this hotel offers 140 contemporary rooms in a soothing palette, with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and tea kettles. A convenient location, coupled with ample facilities that include a rooftop pool, a gym, three dining options, and an elegant spa, make this a solid option. However, some rooms suffer from noise and have poor views of neighboring buildings. It's worth comparing rates with sister property Liberty Central Saigon Riverside Hotel, which has river views from its chic rooftop pool and some rooms.

Cat Huy Hotel
353 / 28 Pham Ngu Lao Street, District 1

Cat Huy Hotel is a solid budget option located right in the heart of the backpackers’ area, within walking distance of many major attractions. Its 10 rooms are spacious and feature great amenities for a hotel in this price range, including air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. There is little in the way of property features, but with ultra-low rates, clean rooms, and free breakfast, those looking for cheap, central accommodation in Ho Chi Minh may find this to be one of the best values around.

EdenStar Saigon Hotel & Spa
38 Bui Thi Xuan, Ben Thanh, District 1

Previously called the Eden Saigon Hotel, the 129-room EdenStar Saigon Hotel is an upper-middle-range property centrally located in District 1 and within walking distance of most everything. It's also close to a bus stop for getting to spots farther afield. Rooms are attractive and modern, and come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning. Some have jetted tubs in bathrooms and outstanding city views, but others face the building next door. The rooftop pool with panoramic city views is a highlight here, and the restaurant and bars also get good marks. Other features include a spa, fitness center, and nice event spaces. Travelers can also consider the Palace Hotel Saigon, which has similar features and lower rates, but more basic rooms with less style.

Duc Vuong Hotel
195 Bui Vien St, Pham Ngu Lao ward, Dist 1

The 50-room Duc Vuong Hotel is a budget hotel located at the end of Pham Ngu Lao, a popular backpacker street in bustling District 1. It's within walking distance of numerous cafes, bars, and shops, and many major attractions can be reached on foot or by a short taxi ride. Some of its rooms lack windows, but they are all clean and pleasant, with flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, welcome snacks, and en-suite bathrooms with separate showers. The rooftop bar and restaurant with city views is a favorite with travelers from across the city, and the hotel's expansive free breakfast buffet is a major plus. The Beautiful Saigon 3 Hotel is a similar well-located budget property, but it doesn't have a restaurant or bar and rates can be higher.

The Alcove Library Hotel
133A Nguyen Dinh Chinh Street, Phu Nhuan District

The upscale Alcove Library Hotel is a charming boutique property with a literary theme throughout. This extends from the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in the stunning lobby -- home to an extensive library -- and into its 26 elegant rooms where framed literary quotes are hung on the walls. Suites have full kitchenettes, but cheaper rooms can have small bathrooms, and some lack views. The hotel is situated on a quiet street in a non-touristy neighborhood halfway between the airport and District 1, but it's a 15-minute ride to many of the city’s popular attractions. An excellent free breakfast is served at the attractive rooftop terrace restaurant, Bookmark, which is open all day. For a more central option, the Liberty Central Saigon Centre Hotel has only marginally higher rates.

PARKROYAL Saigon
309B - 311 Nguyen Van Troi Street, Tan Binh District

The PARKROYAL is an upscale business hotel located a five-minute drive from the airport. Rooms are spacious and bright, with double-glazed windows, LCD TVs, minibars, one king or two twin beds in each, and free Wi-Fi. Decor is contemporary if a little generic, and bathrooms in Standard Rooms could use an update. With a pleasant pool, solid buffet restaurant, small spa, and well-equipped fitness center, the hotel is a good option for those doing business in the area or with a short layover in HCMC. However, those interested in exploring District 1 may want to note that, although the hotel offers free shuttle service to and from the city center, there are no tourist attractions within walking distance.

Sanouva Saigon Hotel
177 Ly Tu Trong Street, Ben Thanh Ward, District 1

Located on a busy, tree-dotted street in the center of Ho Chi Minh City, very near Ben Tranh Market, this mid-range boutique hotel has 53 rooms spread over 10 floors. Opened in 2009 and renovated in 2014, these tasteful accommodations meld modern amenities (including flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi) with traditional-looking embellishments (like bamboo blinds and fun little fruit baskets). Given the hotel's size, it has a fair number of on-site features, too: a lobby-level restaurant, small workout room, and meeting spaces among them. Depending on your priority list, though, the nearby Anpha Boutique Hotel -- another three-pearl property -- might be a better alternative. It has a rooftop terrace and on-site tour desk but no fitness or conferencing facilities.

Eastin Grand Hotel Saigon
253 Nguyen Van Troi Street

Formerly the Mövenpick Hotel Saigon, the stylish Eastin is a solid pick for luxury in Ho Chi Minh. Dark wood furniture, crisp white linens, and Chesterfield armchairs make rooms elegant and classic -- but glass-enclosed bathrooms and high-tech amenities add a modern twist. With a large outdoor pool, three tasty restaurants, a well-equipped fitness center, and upscale services, the hotel draws all kinds of travelers. However, although there is free shuttle service to the city center, the hotel’s location near the airport makes it more convenient for business travelers than those interested in seeing the sights.
