Articles Mentioning Mid-Range

Hanalei Colony Resort

The three-pearl Hanalei Colony Resort embodies what many travelers to Kauai seek — a rustic, relaxed place to experience peace and quiet while immersed in some of the most spectacular scenery on the island. In keeping with the back-to-breathing theme here, there are no televisions or telephones in the rooms. Instead, the 48 spacious two-bedroom units all have full kitchens, island-style furniture, and generous lanais with views of the ocean, which laps at the property. Features include a small spa, pool, hot tub, and a Mediterranean restaurant, though housekeeping only takes place every three days and breakfast is a minimal affair. Those wanting a full menu of resort services will do better at the similarly priced Marriott in Lihue.

Citadines Connect Fifth Avenue New York

Located just minutes from some of Midtown’s best attractions — Times Square, Fifth Avenue’s shopping stretch, and Rockefeller Center, among them — the 124-room Holiday Inn Express Fifth Avenue is a comfortable option with free Wi-Fi and continental breakfast. The standard rooms, though cramped, have either a king-size bed or two doubles — a rare thing, in New York. Distrikt Hotel, another value spot in Midtown, charges for its continental breakfast, but could be an excellent alternative for travelers hoping for a bit more style.

Holiday Inn Express New York City – Chelsea

Located on an unpopular side street, a bit cut off from most major attractions (though they are all accessible by subway), this 228-room Holiday Inn Express is significantly cheaper than its sisters, and just about every other hotel in New York. Given its free Wi-Fi, breakfast, and 24 hour gym, plus a cute outdoor courtyard, it’s an incredible value.

Hampton Inn Manhattan Madison Square Garden Area

While the Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden has all the chain-hotel essentials — free Wi-Fi; free breakfast; 24-hour fitness center; big, clean, comfortable beds — being next to the Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, and Lincoln Tunnel traffic isn’t ideal. Still, it’s a well-priced home base for exploring the city’s major attractions — not its trendy bars and restaurants.

Marriott’s Grand Chateau

The 643-suite Marriott’s Grand Chateau is a mid-range time-share property located right across from Planet Hollywood and a five-minute walk from the Strip. Spacious Guest Rooms or Villas have pleasantly homey decor and come equipped with full kitchens, living rooms, and dining areas, plus they have washers/dryers. Two outdoor pools include a small rooftop option, plus both pools have bars — one of which serves food like cheeseburgers. There’s no full restaurant on-site, but there is a 24/7 marketplace. Fitness facilities are modern and impressive, but there’s no spa or casino. The hotel is one of few properties that doesn’t tack on a resort fee, plus it offers free Wi-Fi and free valet parking. As an alternative, the Hilton Grand Vacations on the Boulevard has a spa and bigger pools.

The Hotel @ New York City

The Hotel @ New York City sits on a street corner in low-key Murray Hill, with some great restaurants and shops as its neighbors. The free continental breakfast is a perk for this mid-range hotel, but the renovated breakfast room didn’t update the spare food options or solve all the housekeeping issues where food service and NY pests are concerned. The rooms are adequate with flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers, but the dated decor is hard on the eyes. Budget travelers should compare with the nearby Hotel 31, which has views of the Empire State Building from some rooms. For those more comfortable with brand names, the Hilton Garden Inn New York/Midtown Park Ave is just a few blocks away.

Off Soho Suites

Near bars and music venues in the Lower East Side (not SoHo), the 38 clean, stylish guest rooms at the Off-SoHo Suites have either shared or private access to a fully equipped kitchen. It’s a fair pick, for the price, but it’s rates often near those of fancier hotels on hipper blocks.

Four Points by Sheraton Manhattan SoHo Village

A reliable chain that offers free wireless and access to a 24-hour fitness center, the Four Points SoHo Village provides in-room comforts and features that best other hotels in its price range. Though it is situated on a drab, industrial-style street, SoHo’s famous boutiques, bars, and restaurants are just around the corner.

California Hotel and Casino

California Hotel and Casino is a three-pearl, Hawaiian-themed property in downtown Las Vegas, a five-minute walk from the bustling Fremont Street Experience. Its 779 modern rooms were renovated in 2017 and have gray-toned contemporary interiors. The hotel’s casino has been renovated to include table games, a sports book, and coin-operated slot machines (a rarity in Vegas these days). There are also two bars and four restaurants, including a Hawaiian restaurant that serves ox tail and spam dishes — but overall, they get mixed reviews. Other amenities include a small pool, gym, and free shuttles to The Strip. There’s no resort fee, but Wi-Fi and parking cost extra. For a cheaper downtown stay with a huge pool and casino, it’s worth trying your luck at Downtown Grand, an Ascend Collection Hotel.

Gold Coast Hotel & Casino

A modest property just off the Strip, the Gold Coast caters to locals with free parking and a 70-lane bowling alley. Rooms are bare bones, but the hotel itself offers some pleasant surprises: a small but nicely landscaped pool, authentic dim sum, and a staff that’s easy to find.
