Articles Mentioning Mid-Range

Best Western Pioneer Inn

Built in 1901, the Best Western Pioneer Inn is the oldest continually operating hotel in Hawaii. The mid-range hotel’s greatest asset is its harbor-front location in downtown Lahaina — though there aren’t any beaches within walking distance. The historic property looks much like it did at the turn of the century, with its colonial exterior, charming front porch, and gingerbread trim. The hotel’s 34 rooms are classic spaces with wood furniture and white linens, but the decor is more generic than historic. On-site amenities include a small outdoor pool, popular full restaurant (with happy hour and live music), and small event space. Travelers looking for a beachfront property may prefer the Kaanapali Ocean Inn, though it isn’t historic and tends to be pricier.

Coconut Waikiki Hotel

This three-pearl, 81-room boutique hotel is located in Waikiki, about a 10-minute walk from the beach. It’s a funky little property with retro-inspired decor and a relaxed atmosphere that’s different from the massive resorts nearby. Air-conditioned rooms are modern and colorful, and all include efficiency kitchenettes and furnished lanais or terraces with either city or mountain views. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant or bar, but a free breakfast buffet with eggs and a waffle station is served daily. The outdoor heated pool has a wrap-around pool deck, barbecue area, and play area for kids. There’s also a small fitness center with modern cardio equipment. Extra perks include free afternoon snacks and beach towels. Park Shore Waikiki is another good value option, adding a beach front location and on-site restaurants.

The Grandview at Las Vegas

The Grandview at Las Vegas is a mid-range time-share property whose suites have full kitchens and comfortable bedrooms. Each of the 1,516 apartment-style suites has a washer/dryer and whirlpool tub, but there’s a lot of variety in quality and decor. The family-friendly hotel has five outdoor pools, including a kids’ pool with water features, as well as mini-golf and a large indoor game room. The only dining option is a small take-out deli, however, and it’s at least a 10-minute drive from attractions on the Strip. It’s right next door to the South Point Hotel and Casino, which is both a draw and a natural competitor, as it has its own movie complex, 64-lane bowling alley, and an array of restaurants, though rooms lack kitchens.

Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki Beach

Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki Beach is a three-pearl hotel in central Waikiki. It’s a five-minute walk from the beach. The hotel’s 623 rooms are fresh and modern, with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and balconies (some featuring partial ocean views). Overall, rooms are tad compact and sometimes noisy. The small pool is framed by tightly arranged loungers and overlooks traffic-filled Kuhio Avenue. TR Fire Grill serves American cuisine and has a reasonably-priced breakfast buffet. Its happy hour specials are a nice plus. There are no resort fees and amenities include a fitness center, business center, mini-mart, and free Wi-Fi. For something closer to the beach with bright and modern rooms, it’s worth checking out the Park Shore Waikiki as well. Rates there can often be lower.

Kiahuna Plantation Resort

A 333-unit, south shore condo fronting Poipu Beach, with limited service and varying decor, though plenty of open space, the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation offers an experience similar to the Castle Kiahuna, with which it shares the Kiahuna Plantation; both have access to the pool, golf, and tennis across the street, but there’s slightly better service here.

Maui Coast Hotel

One of the only hotel-style properties in Kihei, the three-pearl Maui Coast Hotel offers some of the best amenities in the area. The 265-room hotel has a beautiful pool, an on-site restaurant and pool bar, a modern fitness center, and a nicely maintained tennis court. Plus, it offers freebies like parking, Wi-Fi, and borrowable beach bikes. Rooms are traditional hotel-style spaces (not condo units) with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and outdoor spaces, but decor is generic. Maui Coast is a three-minute walk from Kamaole Beach Park I, and within walking distance of local shops and restaurants. The nearby Aston at the Maui Banyan might appeal to travelers looking for condominium-style units, but the property lacks Maui Coast’s on-site amenities.

South Seas Hotel

With basic but clean rooms, direct beach access, a nice pool, and an address on swank Collins Avenue, the low-key South Seas is one of the best values in SoBe — if you can tolerate small bathrooms and a tiny gym with no air-conditioning.

Hilton Grand Vacations on the Las Vegas Strip

This large Hilton hotel is a three-pearl timeshare property that offers 1,239 spacious studios and multi-bedroom suites. Suites are spacious and well equipped, with full kitchens, living rooms with dining areas, and even washers/dryers; studios have kitchenettes. Though there’s no casino here, it has a solid set of features, including two attractive outdoor pools and three hot tubs, modern fitness facilities, and a large spa with six treatment rooms. The biggest downer here is the location and some guests cite it as a big inconvenience — it’s a bit far from the Strip and about a 20-minute walk from most of the main hotel-casinos. Those wanting to be closer to the action might want to opt for Elara by Hilton Grand Vacations, also a timeshare property, located right by Miracle Mile Mall and Planet Hollywood.

Richmond Hotel

The three-pearl, 92-room Richmond Hotel is in the heart of South Beach, walking distance to all the dining, shopping, and nightlife on Lincoln road. It’s in an ideal location for tourists, providing direct access to a reserved beach area with loungers and umbrellas (fee). Its rooms are on the small side, with minimal amenities and some have a ton of visible wear, but they also have a charming Art Deco style. The courtyard is one of the best in the area for a mid-range property, complete with a sizable outdoor pool, hot tub, and cushioned loungers, but the gym is small. A poolside cafe is open for breakfast and lunch. The hotel definitely looks and feel old, so for a more modern hotel along the beach in this range, check out the nearby Marseilles Hotel.
