Bottom Line

Situated on a back road not far from the town of Vagator, Orritel Village Square is a three-pearl boutique that attracts travelers who are in Goa to relax rather than party. The 30 rooms range in size, but all feature a similar decor scheme dominated by earthy elements such as cracked mosaic tiling and exposed brick ceilings. Features include a lovely lagoon pool that stretches across a leafy central courtyard plus a swing set, and a game room. The covered rooftop restaurant serving Indian and Chinese food along with a decent selection of cocktails. There's also a conference space for up to 50 guests. Breakfast is included in room rates, as is secure parking, and while Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, the service can be spotty and slow.

OYO Flagship 15006 Orritel Village Vagator

Scene

Leafy family-friendly boutique property is popular with Indian tourists and those visiting Goa to relax

The Village Square is a quiet and relaxing mid-range boutique resort tucked off a quiet back road near Vagator and Chapora in North Goa. Check-in takes place in a small room at the front of the resort guarded by a generally sleepy resident canine. Rooms and facilities are situated around a main pool area with a few small grassy areas and tons of foliage, including bougainvillea and birds of paradise plants. Other common areas include a lovely rooftop terrace area with a Balinese-style wooden roof strung with lanterns and flanked by tall leafy  trees. Though some international travelers stay here, most guests tend to be domestic travelers, including plenty of families with small kids. The quiet ambience and location keeps the party scene at a distance and most people staying here turn in fairly early.

Location

In between Chapora and Vagator, on a narrow back road without much in walking distance

This hotel is located on a small lane that shoots off a long, narrow road. It's sandwiched between the main Vagator Road and the main Chapora Road, a few minutes’ drive inland, and a bumpy three-minute drive from the Vagator Petrol Pump. The area is not good for walking, and although there are some restaurants and small shops within a 10-minute walk, travelers are better off with a car or motorbike. The closest beach is Chapora, a seven-minute drive or 25-minute walk away. Vagator Beach takes 10 minutes to reach by car or 40 minutes on foot. It's a 45-minute drive to Panjim. Getting to the airport can take up to 90 minutes, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Neutrally furnished rooms and suites, many with broken-tile mosaic work and some outdoor seating areas

This hotel offers 30 rooms across four categories, all with neutral, earth-toned furnishings dominated by exposed brick, off-white walls and bedspreads, and brown broken-tile mosaic work. Kettles, flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning come standard. The four entry-level Economy Rooms measure 220 to 250 square feet (18 to 23 square meters). All are simply furnished with queen beds and mosaic tiling, plus exposed brick ceilings, but they do feel a little dark. The next level up are the Terrace Garden Rooms, which add mini-fridges and lead out to small garden areas or furnished patios. However, they are small, at only 180 square feet (about 17 square meters) and some have sliding-glass doors for walls, which means guests will need to keep their curtains fully drawn if they want to maintain a sense of privacy. Superior Rooms add safes and upwards of 340 square feet (32 square meters) of floor space and big bathrooms with glassed-in walk-in showers and mosaic accents. There are also three Luxury Suites that range in size from 580 to 640 square feet (54 to 60 square meters). Each has a four-poster bed and a separate half bathroom. Note that Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, but it's slow and the reception isn't great in some of the rooms.

Features

Lovely lagoon-style pool, swing set, game room with table tennis, and open-air restaurant with free buffet breakfast

The star feature at the Village Square is its lovely outdoor lagoon pool, which winds through the leafy central courtyard. The area features a couple of bridge features and a handful of padded lounge chairs and poolside tables. There are also a few grassy areas where kids can play, plus a small swing set. Just off to one side of the courtyard is a simple banquet hall for up to 50 people on the ground floor and a covered rooftop terrace. A game room with foosball, table tennis, a projector for screening films, a pool table, and a carom board (a traditional Indian game) occupies half of the space. The restaurant with a free breakfast buffet featuring fruit, breads, eggs cooked to order, and a smattering of hot Indian items sits on the other side. Lunch, dinner, and cocktails are also available, with a mix of North Indian and Chinese items on offer. Room service is available. Both Wi-Fi and parking are free, but there are only a few parking spaces and during our visit the internet speed was frustratingly slow.
