Bottom Line

The three-and-a-half-pearl Trident Udaipur sits amid sprawling gardens looking out over Lake Pichola and the Aravalli Mountains. It's a peaceful Udaipur retreat that's far removed from the city’s buzzing market areas. This property’s 141 traditional rooms have views of the gardens, pool, or lake, and include amenities like air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi. However, they're small and some decor is dated. The best features here are the large pool (heated in winter), poolside terrace, and authentic all-day restaurant. There’s also a small spa and fitness room. With its relaxed atmosphere and lovely setting, the hotel draws tourist couples and families, as well as business travelers. It’s also a popular wedding venue. For a touch more luxury in the same setting, travelers should check out the Oberoi Udaivilas.

Trident Udaipur

Scene

Relaxation is the order of the day at this serene lakefront hotel with large landscaped gardens

The Trident’s location on the tranquil shores of Lake Pichola sets the tone for a stay here. The atmosphere is soothing and serene; peacocks roam the floral gardens, while relaxing music plays in the light-filled public areas. Inside, the architecture is traditional, with modern touches; pendant lights dangle from the ceiling against ornate elliptical archways and stained glass windows, and various sculptures -- including large painted wooden figurines -- are dotted around the lobby. The extensive grounds, wicker seating, and the bar’s wooden wainscoting gives the hotel a colonial country club vibe. With its relaxed atmosphere and acres of private space, the hotel is geared toward tourist couples and families, as well as business travelers. It’s also a popular wedding venue and during our visit was preparing for a large wedding party. Downsides are limited to long waits for check-in, check-out, and meals (likely due to the hotel often being at capacity). It also can be a bit more lively when weddings are happening.

The area outside the complex is largely residential, and there are only a handful of businesses, dining options, and local shops within walking distance. Most of the top tourist sights are on the other side of the lake. City Palace is about a 10-minute drive away, as are other destinations like Jagdish Temple and the Bagore Ki Haveli Museum. The city center can also be reached within a 10-minute drive. The train station is about 20 minutes away by car, while Udaipur's airport can be reached in around 45 minutes.

Rooms

Traditional rooms look out over the gardens, pool, or lake, but are on the small side

Rooms at the Trident strike a balance between traditional and modern. Local touches are include decor inspired by Rajasthani jharokas (overhanging enclosed balconies) and ornate picture-frame windows, plus Jaipuri kalam prints and local artwork. Green marble -- a signature of the region -- features heavily, used for the floor and the bathrooms. It’s worth noting that though there is a small seating area, rooms here are a smaller than other higher-category hotels in Udaipur. Additionally, some of the furniture is looking a little dated and tired. Amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi for up to four devices. Coffee- and tea-making facilities are provided, and minibars are available as well. The rooms are identical, save for their views. Most are Deluxe Gardenview Rooms, with the option to upgrade to a pool or lake view. Four Suites have living areas separated by a sliding door. Bathrooms are dated and compact across the board, with shower/tub combos, towels, and toiletries -- they can seem a little dark and claustrophobic.
