Liberta' Bed And Breakfast
Via Filippo Turati 5

The three-room La Libert' Bed and Breakfast is a humble, but comfortable choice for a budget stay in Palermo. Located next to Piazza Ruggero Settimo, the tiny property is central to many of city’s major sites, as well as numerous shopping, dining, and drinking options. Set inside a typical apartment building, the dreary entrance fails to hint at the light-filled penthouse that awaits on the top floor. Though simple in decor, La Libertà has been well updated and maintained, and offers rooms with modest but modern features. Two of the three rooms have private bathrooms, and all have access to the quiet rooftop terrace. A simple daily breakfast can be served in rooms or up on the roof. As an alternative, Palazzo Pantaleo B&B has larger rooms and is within walking distance to Teatro Massimo.

Charming House IQs

The IQs Charming House is an enchanting guesthouse with a private jetty in the pretty, quiet neighborhood of Dorsoduro, within walking distance of Saint Mark’s Square. The hotel features modern and luxurious decor, a Gothic-style brick courtyard, a small library with canal views, and concierge services. Four suites and one apartment feature stylish furnishings, kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and charming canal views, although they are dimly lit. The rooms at the guesthouse's sister hotel, DD724, are more brightly lit.

Hotel Giudecca Venezia
Corte Ferrando Giudecca 409/C

The 30-room, mid-range Domina Home Giudecca is a charming, quiet hotel with a sunlit atrium that could be out of a Henry James novella. The hotel is located on the residential island of Giudecca, overlooking a peaceful backwater canal. The area is a 15-minute water taxi ride from the city center, but is relaxing and good value for guests who don’t mind traveling the canals like natives. Rooms are clean, spacious, and individually decorated with nondescript furniture but lots of architectural interest. Rates are far cheaper than at more centrally located mid-range hotels.

Hotel Hesperia
57 Paseo de la Castellana Chamberí Madrid

On a quiet, canal-facing street, a short walk from Venice’s Santa Lucia railway station and the Grand Canal, the Hotel Hesperia is an affordable alternative to the larger properties found in the oftentimes crowded San Marco area. This small hotel has 16 rooms spread over two floors; some face the canal and have original features such as exposed wood-beam ceilings. A free continental breakfast is included, but Wi-Fi is not -- although past guests have reported getting a free five-hour pass upon check-in.

Hotel Campiello
Castello 4647 Campiello del Vin

The 15-room, mid-range Hotel Campiello is a boutique property in a 16th-century convent. It is close to all the major tourist sights (St. Mark’s Square is just a four-minute walk away). The atmosphere and decor is a blend of classic Venetian and Art Deco. The tiny guest rooms are individually decorated -- some have elaborate Venetian fabrics and antique furniture. Studios and Two-Bedroom Apartments with kitchenettes are available. Bathrooms are modern but vary greatly in size, depending on the room.

Baglioni Hotel Luna

The Luna Hotel Baglioni is a luxury chain hotel with 104 rooms located less than a two-minute walk from the shops, restaurants, and architecture of Saint Mark’s Square. The classic hotel delivers a high level of service in a beautiful setting. Canova, an award-winning restaurant serving Italian and international cuisine, is on-site along with a café and full bar. Prices are a lower at the Bauer Hotel, but it’s farther from Saint Mark’s and less luxurious.

Ca' Pisani Hotel
Rio Tera Foscarini 979A Dorsoduro

This 29-room upscale design hotel is located in the arty Dorsoduro area, within walking distance of all the city's major sights. Its common areas and rooms are characterized by quirky Art Deco decorative touches, including flamboyant orange armchairs, polished tile floors, and patterned rugs. It has a cute roof terrace overlooking the rooftops of Venice, a Turkish steam bath, and a charming restaurant. Those who prefer a more central location, however, may want to compare rates with Hotel Saturnia & International.
