Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino
3950 Las Vegas Boulevard South

The giant Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino offers a ton of features for kids (wave pool, streaming lazy river pool, shark reef aquarium) and adults (lively bars, world-class restaurants, a large spa), but the constant crowds, long lines, and occasional airport noise can make it a slightly less attractive upscale option. Additionally, it’s on the far southern end of the Strip, meaning many sights require a drive. All of the hotel's 3,209 rooms underwent renovations in 2015 and 2016, resulting in some of the most visually appealing accommodations in Vegas (which is saying a lot). The spacious rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. It’s worth comparing rates with the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, which provides similar amenities, including a ton of excellent entertainment and a popular pool party.

The Cromwell Hotel Las Vegas

Situated in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, The Cromwell is a four-pearl boutique hotel with vintage-style interiors and its own casino. There are 188 rooms and suites, many with views out over The Strip, and while all have elegant decor, most lack coffeemakers. Amenities are geared toward leisure travelers and include Drai's Beachclub Nightclub, an indoor/outdoor club with long hours and multiple pools, but it's restricted to guests 21 and over and there's a fee. There are also a couple of restaurants, namely a 24-hour snack bar and an elegant Italian joint, created by celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis. Overall, it's a great place for young partygoers, but families are better off somewhere more kid-friendly, such as the much larger MGM Grand Hotel & Casino.

Wynn Las Vegas
3131 Las Vegas Boulevard South

Wynn Las Vegas is a modern luxury hotel at the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip, a bit far from the action. Its 2,716 air-conditioned rooms have posh interiors with large flat-screen TVs, marble bathrooms, and gorgeous Strip or mountain views. Upgraded Tower Suites include perks like a private pool, private check-ins, and free breakfasts. Wynn’s sprawling casino is one of The Strip’s most chic, but it can be smoky when crowded. The 13 fine-dining and casual restaurants include a steakhouse, Asian, Italian, and American cuisines, plus a raved-about buffet with often long waits. Other amenities include multiple pools, a spa and gym, nightclub, wedding spaces, and meeting rooms. Although the 18-hole golf course closed in 2017, it's set to reopen by end of 2019. Travelers seeking a sophisticated stay without a casino might consider the Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas.

Tahiti Village

The upper-middle-range Tahitian Village on S. Las Vegas Blvd is a large (876-room) time-share property that rents one- and two-bedroom suites. Rates are reasonable considering the array of features (including a spa), many of which other time-share properties off the Strip often lack. This property is very family-friendly, with a lazy river, weekly luau, and kids' activities room. In-house eateries are limited to a Denny's. The tropical decor is a little kitschy, but suites are clean and spacious; all have kitchenettes or full kitchens.

The LINQ Hotel & Casino

Right in the center of the Las Vegas Strip, The LINQ Hotel & Casino is a 2,640-room, budget-friendly option popular with travelers who just want a cheap place to stay. Formerly known as the Quad and, before that, the Imperial Palace, the property offers a casino, a pool, and numerous bars and lounges on-site for nightlife, plus Guy Fieri's only Las Vegas restaurant. Rooms were renovated as part of the rebranding now sport a clean, modern look, though they're light on amenities (there are no coffeemakers or clocks, for example). Parking and Wi-Fi are free and the central location makes it a good place for those who want to spend more time outside their rooms than in them. It's a good value for this category, and attracts a younger party crowd; families may want to compare rates at the New York New York Hotel & Casino, which has a roller coaster on-site (as opposed to the ferris wheel here).

Desert Paradise Resort

The Desert Paradise Resort is a modern, chain-style suites hotel aimed at longer-stay families and business travelers, located about 10 minutes from the McCarran airport in Las Vegas. Situated in a quieter part of town, a few minutes' drive from the Las Vegas Strip, the mid-range hotel could hardly be called a resort, but all rooms are either one- or two-bedrooms apartments with full kitchens, and the hotel has two outdoor pools, a game room, a lounge, a barbecue area, and a fitness center.

Boulder Station Hotel and Casino
4111 Boulder Hwy

This mid-range hotel and casino has 300 modern rooms and offers an all-encompassing Vegas experience. There’s enough gaming, dining options, and entertainment to keep guests satisfied, yet the off-strip location means it’s priced at a budget level compared with properties on the famed Vegas thoroughfare. The rooms have a contemporary style, and are certainly among the smartest in town at this price point. It’s worth noting that there's a resort fee to pay on top of the room rate, but the hotel still offers great value.

Palace Station Hotel and Casino

Palace Station Hotel and Casino is a mid-range property with 1,011 rooms across two buildings, located within five minutes of the strip, but a world away in terms of price. The low rates and numerous gaming and dining options make this a popular choice. There is a resort fee, however, and like many casino hotels in Vegas, the smell of cigarette smoke in the public areas can be overpowering. Rooms are spacious and smart, with flat-screen TVs, and the hotel offers extras that other off-strip hotels like Boulder Station don’t -- such as a fitness center, hair and beauty salon, and free shuttle to the strip and the airport.

Las Vegas Marriott

Right outside the Las Vegas Convention Center, this hotel offers ample business services and a well-equipped gym. Yet with a forgettable pool, no nightlife and remote location from the action on the Strip, it has little to recommend for anyone other than conventioneers. Plus, suites are on the small side.
