This 40-room hotel housed in an 18th-century building on bustling Avenida da Liberdade mixes modern decor with restored historic touches. (Most of the ironwork is original, as is the wooden front door.) The predominant look is sleek and contemporary. While the room decor isn't quite luxurious, it's certainly attractive, with warm chocolate and beige tones, pops of pattern, wood floors, and sepia-toned photographs. The reading lights attached to the headboards are a convenient detail. Many rooms have Juliette balconies looking out onto the tree-lined street, reminding guests of the hotel's fabulous location; numerous major sights -- as well as popular neighborhoods -- are within walking distance, so families seeing the sights won't have to walk far. Other family-friendly amenities include a jet pool, 24-hour room service, a laundry, a video library, babysitting services, and cribs. Also, the entire hotel is non-smoking.

The 83-room NH Liberdade is a solid option for families with a great location right on bustling Avenida da Liberdade. Spacious rooms are a decent value, and feature attractive, modern decor with nice touches such as patterned throws, striped curtains, sleek furniture, large flat-screen TVs, and wet bars. The restaurant and bars are simple but nice, and most room rates include a cold breakfast buffet (with hot items on request). There's a seasonal pool which kids may appreciate, and babysitting services and baby cots are available. Kids two years and under stay free in a parents' room, and one child up to age .11 gets a free breakfast when sharing parents' room. Rooms have queen-size beds or two twin beds, and Suites have separate living rooms with a couch. All in all, it's a stylish, family-friendly four-pearl choice.

Hotel Britania has a loyal set of customers who return year after year. Its location on a tree-lined street just off of bustling Avenida de Liberdade is convenient, but removed from the loud noise of the city. It's a boutique, with only 32 rooms, and it lacks the amenities of a larger property -- there is no fitness center, spa, or full restaurant. However, the hotel does offer a breakfast buffet as well as 24-hour room service, and guests can grab a drink at the wood-paneled bar. Built in the 1940s, the hotel maintains the Art Deco look: The lobby is outfitted with marble columns and impressive chandeliers, and the spacious rooms have dark woods, silver accents, funky light fixtures, and marble bathrooms. Cribs, babysitting services, and connecting rooms are available -- but no rollaway beds. Families with two children must book two rooms.

The 94-room Hotel Lisboa's is an elegant hotel in a central location, just off of Avenida da Liberdade and within walking distance of numerous sights. Unlike some of the smaller Heritage hotels, Hotel Lisboa features a full restaurant and a fitness center (though it's tiny), as well as great common areas. The luxurious lounge, dubbed the "Chill Out Room," features plush furniture, paneled ceilings, and fresh flowers, while the rooftop terrace is lit up at night and has a (non-alcoholic) honesty bar. The rooms are simple but charming; half have antique-style mahogany furniture, and the other half are more modern, but all are meant to evoke the feel of a Portuguese home. Marble bathrooms have shower/tub combos and bidets. Babysitting services and cribs are available.

The Altis Belem Hotel & Spa is a 50-room boutique in Belem, a residential neighborhood on the Tagus River. Belem is slightly removed from the city center, but has several of its own attractions, as well as gorgeous marina views and lovely restaurants lining the river. The hotel's vibe is sleek and sexy, but rooms are spacious and some have balconies with private whirlpools. Features include a spa, a big indoor pool, and a Michelin-rated restaurant. Babysitting services and cribs are available upon request. Though the Altis is more luxurious than the options higher on this list, its location, lack of bathroom privacy, and adult-oriented vibe make it a slightly less appealing choice for families.
