Bottom Line

The four-pearl Quinta Mirabela is located relatively far inland, a 30-minute walk away from Funchal's center, but this means views overlooking the city and sea are breathtaking. At just 24 rooms, the hotel's small size ensures a quiet retreat for guests, who are primarily couples. The modern rooms have a sleek black-and-yellow color scheme and marble bathrooms, plus some have furnished balconies. All rooms, however, have lovely views, which can also be found at the pool and the panoramic rooftop terrace. A comprehensive spa and on-site restaurant serving local cuisine round out the features. As there's little to occupy children, families should consider the four-pearl Vidamar Resort Madeira, which has a kid's club and sports facilities.

Quinta Mirabela

Scene

Small, design-driven boutique with stunning views over Funchal and the sea

A panoramic rooftop terrace, relatively inland location, and 24 stylishly designed rooms draw guests who are looking for a secluded, upscale vacation rather than one spent hitting up the area's major tourist destinations. The modern interiors and a bit quirky. The lobby has a white, black and red color scheme with a mix of streamlined and funky furniture, a dramatic light fixture, and metal side tables in the shape of a head. The design-driven philosophy extends to the well-manicured grounds with minimalist furniture on cobblestone. More notable, however, are the widespread views over the city and sea beyond. The lack of kid-friendly features and secluded vibe make the intimate hotel best suited to couples.

Location

Inland setting with gorgeous views but far from city center

The Quinta Mirabela is located inland high on a hill, away from the tourist crowds and between two botanical gardens. This means the views are stunning, but the walk down and up the hill is at a notably steep incline and quite long (the walk up is about an hour). As such, getting to the city center and tourist attractions will likely require a car or public transport for most guests. It's on a street famous for the island tradition of wicker tobogganing, which originally took inhabitants from the hills down to Funchal, and brave guests can give it a go. Traffic tends to go at speed around the slope's blind corners (there are also no curbs), which makes it hazardous for those with children. Hotel shuttle service into Funchal is available during select times.

Rooms

Modern, attractive rooms incorporate motifs from island flora

The modern rooms are sophisticated, decorated in black wooden furniture, patterned carpet that resembles cobblestone, and gray curtains and bed throws. Some color is present in lime-green chairs and large-scale contemporary art depicting local island flora. However, rooms are a bit small, particularly the bathrooms. Guests can opt for rooms with furnished balconies or "with a view," the latter of which isn't private but grants guests access to a shared patio with tables and chairs. All have lovely views, and rooms are generally quiet -- even those overlooking the pool. Amenities include air-conditioning, TVs (which may be old tube-style, minibars, free Wi-Fi, and safes. Surprisingly, the property does not offer irons or tea- and coffee-making facilities. Marble bathrooms are tight but sleek, outfitted with shower/tub combos, quality toiletries, bidets, and hairdryers.
