Bottom Line

The Be Live Adults Only La Cala is an upper-middle-range hotel set in a traditional Mediterranean-style building overlooking Cala Mayor beach. Thanks to its interiors combining a stylish mix of classic and contemporary, as well as its child-free policy, the hotel has a relaxed vibe that compliments the plentiful sea views. Modern, black-and-white rooms have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and tea- and coffee-making facilities, plus balconies -- most overlooking the water -- though not everyone enjoys the open-plan bathrooms. Breakfast is included and of good quality, and there are a spacious alfresco terrace and an Africa-themed a la carte restaurant. At just 67 rooms, it fills up fast, but travelers can check availability at nearby sister hotels Marivent and Costa Palma, as there's not much difference between them and they share some facilities.

Be Live Adults Only La Cala Boutique

Scene

Relaxed adult-only hotel combining traditional Mediterranean and modern decor

At odds with the surrounding '70s-era apartment blocks, the Be Live Adults Only La Cala occupies a handsome, Mediterranean country-style building complete with natural-stone facade, wooden eaves, and elegant arches. Built in 1958, the traditional styling continues inside with checkered marble flooring, colored stained glass windows, and gilt-framed mirrors, though with the addition of smart furnishings that range in style from mid-century Scandinavian to contemporary minimalist. The effect is a laid-back though grown-up vibe, added to by the child-free environment (kids under 16 are not permitted). To the rear is a small but peaceful terrace that extends the length of the hotel, and directly overlooks the picturesque sandy beach and turquoise sea.

Location

Overlooking Cala Major beach a short drive from the Majorcan capital

The hotel has a prime position set right on the pretty sandy beach of Cala Major, a small resort neighborhood located just 10 to 15 minutes' drive from the Majorcan capital of Palma. The resort has its fair share of restaurants, bars, and mini-markets within strolling distance that largely cater to the mostly tourist and ex-pat population. The beach is in two parts, with the other half dominated by the Hotel Nix Palace next door, and both can get very busy over summer. Art-buffs can find the Pilar and Joan Miro Foundation (his old studio and art museum) just 10 minutes' walk away, while a 10-minute drive along the coast are the pretty coves of Illetas and Comtesa. Palma de Mallorca Airport is 15 to 20 minutes away by taxi, or an hour by public transport.

Rooms

Updated rooms with spacious balconies, most with sea views

The hotel's 67 rooms feel bright and modern, with a black-and-white color palette, wood-effect flooring, and unadorned contemporary furniture. Rooms have spacious, furnished balconies -- many with lovely sea views, but some overlook the street or are obscured by trees. Amenities include 32-inch flat-screen TVs (with limited English-speaking channels), mini-fridges, and coffee- and tea-making facilities; in-room Wi-Fi is available though mostly at a charge. Bathrooms are semi-open-plan and some guests dislike the lack of privacy; walk-in showers are roomy with clear-glass partitions, plus there are a large selection of toiletries and wall-mounted hairdryers. Bathrobes and slippers are also provided.

Features

Outdoor pool with daybeds, plus a spacious sea-view alfresco terrace

The hotel's dining room is a pleasant mix of traditional architectural touches lit by blown-glass chandeliers and given an updated contemporary finish. A decent buffet breakfast is served each morning, which includes cooked-to-order omelets and chilled cava. Breakfast is always included and an optional half-board covers buffet dinner (served in neighboring sister hotel). The African-infused Masai restaurant also offers an a la carte menu, and there's plenty of sea-view terrace for alfresco dining. The P-shaped pool isn't huge, but it's lined with ample loungers and reservable daybeds overlooking the beach. While there's little in the way of spa or gym facilities on-site, guests have access to those at the sister hotel Be Live Marivent, including a sauna, steam room, and hydrotherapy pool.
