Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa

Port de Soller, Soller, Majorca (Mallorca)

Of course Majorca's most luxurious hotel is on top of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean. The setting isn't all that impresses at this 121-room hotel: it has a number of wonderful features for families (including a pool and a kids’ club), adult-only amenities, and areas for those looking to get away from it all. Rooms are sophisticated and airy, with a soft earth-tone palette and large bathrooms with soaking tubs. The fitness center, the views, and the pools are all top-notch, but it's the ultra-luxe spa -- with a large outdoor pool with underwater jetted loungers and mountain views -- that really ensures Jumeirah's best-in-class status.

2

Hospes Maricel Mallorca & Spa

Cas Catala, Majorca (Mallorca)

This is the sort of timeless place where you'd expect to see a debonair Cary Grant type lounging by the pool. The 51-room luxury boutique Hospes Maricel is marvelously classic in some parts, yet strikingly contemporary in others. Views of gardens, mountains, and the teal ocean are ubiquitous. In the summer, spa treatments are carried out in intimate arched stone alcoves overlooking the Mediterranean. The on-site Maricel Restaurant has a spectacular terrace overlooking the water, and serves traditional Majorcan cuisine with all locally sourced ingredients. The variety of rooms offered -- from opulent classics to more minimalist, eco-friendly rooms with stone walls -- is impressive. Small drawbacks: service is reportedly not always up to five-pearl standards and there have been issues with a limited hot water supply.

3

Castillo Hotel Son Vida, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca (Mallorca)

Castillo Hotel Son Vida is essentially the crown jewel of Majorca -- synonymous with luxury and elegance -- but it comes in third here since some feel that it's not up to the five-star standards that you might find elsewhere in Europe or the U.S. Nonetheless, the 164-room hotel, housed in a 13th-century castle, has a star-studded history that has helped shape Majorca's glamorous reputation, and modern-day offerings like two elegant restaurants and an extensive wine cellar, a large pool overlooking rolling countryside, impeccable gardens, and golf course surroundings. Guest rooms exhibit the same refined and palatial decor found in the hotel's common areas, and most offer views of the gardens. The remote location overlooking the Bay of Palma is only a 15-minute drive from the colorful and lively city of Palma.

4

Son Brull Hotel & Spa

Pollenca, Majorca (Mallorca)

Son Brull Hotel is one of the finest -- and inevitably priciest -- luxury retreats on the island. Housed in a beautifully preserved 18th-century monastery, the hotel has a serene and scenic rural setting, with extensive gardens on-site and rolling farmland in the distance. (The away-from-it-all location is part of the hotel's appeal, but don't expect anything within walking distance.) The impeccable interior design is incredibly stylish and modern; rooms are decked out in Scandinavian-inspired decor with midcentury-style furniture, polished gray stone floors, and original architectural features such as beam ceilings and stone doorways. Bathrooms also impress, with big jetted tubs, separate walk-in showers, and integrated speakers. Guests arrive to fresh flowers, fruit, and a chilled bottle of Cava, whose grapes are from the hotel's own vineyard. Homegrown produce is featured extensively in breakfast through lunch (all excellent). The infinity-edge pool is surrounded by loungers, daybeds, and country views, and the chic spa has an indoor/outdoor pool and spacious whirlpool tub.

Boutique Hotel Calatrava

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca (Mallorca)

This 16-room boutique hotel in central Palma is one of the city's most indulgent respites, with an enviable location near the sea, as well as restaurants, entertainment, and museums. Hotel Calatrava's rooms are spacious, airy, and tastefully decorated, with nods to the city's modernist artistic history. The spa is beautiful, complete with heated loungers, Finnish spa, and private yoga classes, and stylish gastropub and restaurant offer traditional Spanish cooking with a stylish, but unpretentious twist. There is also an on-site epicirie that sells gourmet food and wine. On top of all of this are the hotel's stunning views of the Seu Cathedral.

6

Hotel Nixe Palace

Cala Major, Majorca (Mallorca)

Hotel Nixe Palace generally lives up to its reputation as a gem of the Mallorcan hospitality industry. The 118-room landmark luxury hotel near central Palma gets moved down a few rungs due to standard rooms that are more in line with what you’d find at an upscale business hotel, but its suites are grand, plus the hotel has a gorgeous pool and several oceanfront terraces. The hotel's restaurant, designed to resemble the stern of a boat, is a delightful place for dinner, and its spa is extensive, but use of its facilities cost a fee.

7

Boutique Hotel Can Alomar

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca (Mallorca)

Boutique Hotel Can Alomar is a luxury hotel with a prime city-center position overlooking Palma's grand Passeig de Born. Practically within eyeshot of the cathedral and surrounded by restaurants, bars, and designer shopping, the location could hardly be better for those looking to explore the city. The 16 guest rooms and suites are particularly spacious, equipped with super-comfy beds and impressive tech, though some are prone to street noise. Highlights include a high-end restaurant and buzzy bar with alfresco terraces, as well as a lovely rooftop pool. Unlike every luxury hotel we've spotlighted so far, Can Alomar doesn't have a spa.

8

Hotel Cort

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca (Mallorca)

Hotel Cort also lacks a spa, but this landmark luxury boutique hotel's immaculately stylish interiors more than make up for its few features. (Its spot in the picturesque center of Palma's Old Town doesn't hurt, either.) All 16 of its rooms and suites are an expert mix of cozy and chic, and the posh bathrooms provide Egyptian cotton towels and Molten Brown products. The top suite also features a rooftop terrace with a whirlpool tub and stunning 360-degree views. There's a real emphasis on dining, starting with an excellent a la carte breakfast (included) and continuing with refined lunch and dinner menus -- all of which can be enjoyed on the lovely, buzzy alfresco terrace.

Fontsanta Hotel Thermal Spa & Wellness

Campos, Majorca (Mallorca)

Fontsanta Hotel, Thermal Spa & Wellness is unlike any luxury hotel we've covered here so far. It doesn't provide a typical beach-centric Mallorcan vacation stay, like Hotel Nixe Palace, or a scenic cobblestone-square setting, like Hotel Cort. Instead, this historic, adult-only destination spa in Campos is built around healing thermal springs that have been in use since the Roman era. Located in the countryside surrounded by nature preserves (and near one of the world's most beautiful beaches), Fontsanta is elegant and high-end, though not to the degree of our first eight hotel picks. The 37 light and modern rooms all come with private balconies or terraces, and posh bathrooms.

The St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort

Costa d'en Blanes, Majorca (Mallorca)

St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort is unquestionably grand, but its lack of local character and somewhat isolated location are hard to ignore -- in a place like Majorca, it's unfortunate to have to drive to a good beach. Rooms are too plain to feel indulgent, but they do feature with balconies, flat-screen TVs, and dark-marble bathrooms. The lush gardens, pools, multiple alfresco dining options, and sprawling grounds do make the 130-room St. Regis Mardavall a picturesque place to relax, though the best of the island definitely lies beyond the hotel's gates.

11

Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa

Sa Coma, Majorca (Mallorca)

Protur Biomar Gran Hotel & Spa is a lower level of luxury compared to our top ten, but it is still among the best hotel options in eastern Majorca. Upscale rooms have balconies or terraces, plus wonderful bathrooms with rainfall showers and separate soaking tubs (in most). The huge spa is the highlight here, with an expansive hydrotherapy area that guests can access for free. The pools, kids’ club, and dozens of daily on-site activities are great perks for families, while the adult-only pool with swim-up bar is a relaxing spot for a lazy day. There are five dining options, and a half-board option is available, but there are extra fees for non-buffet restaurants.

12

Steigenberger Golf & Spa Resort Camp de Mar

Camp De Mar, Majorca (Mallorca)

This Steigenberger Golf & Spa Resort is a luxury golf resort built in the grand style of a Mediterranean villa with Moorish and Neoclassical touches. Its location means easy access to the Andratx Golf Course -- with golf carts on hand -- while Camp de Mar's pleasant sandy beach is 10 minutes away on foot. Most of the 164 guest rooms were updated in 2016, though those still awaiting a revamp are a little old-fashioned; all open to balconies. Breakfast is included and good quality, and a spacious outdoor pool and deluxe spa complete the picture of an elegant resort hotel.
