1

Grand Hyatt Melbourne

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

This opulent, centrally located hotel caters to the needs -- and deep wallets -- of business travelers. With big, comfortable rooms and plenty of on-site amenities, including a pool and rooftop tennis court, meeting facilities, and a spa, the luxurious Grand Hyatt is a solid pick for those who want to combine work and pleasure. It is, however, missing the small touches that set other luxury hotels apart, such as automatic turndown service or refreshments upon arrival.

Sofitel Melbourne on Collins

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Arguably one of the swankiest properties in Melbourne's Central Business District, the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins features 363 elegant rooms and suites, many with views of Phillip Bay. The Club Sofitel Lounge is a gorgeous, high-ceilinged business lounge with free buffet breakfast service and evening cocktails and canapes. The property also has multiple business suites and event rooms, including a massive ballroom that can seat 828. There are excellent spots to eat and drink on-site, from the organic fine-dining No 35 restaurant to the casual Sofi's Lounge where English-style afternoon tea is served. The hotel also has a great fitness center with gym-grade equipment and massage chairs, but it lacks a swimming pool, a slight shocker for such an upscale place with so many features. Rooms are luxurious and bright with floor-to-ceiling windows and beautiful gray marble bathrooms, but there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi.

The Como Melbourne – MGallery by Sofitel

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Long a destination for visiting celebrities, The Como Melbourne features upscale rooms and garden suites that continue to shine thanks to a 2012 renovation. The indoor atrium pool area and outdoor courtyard make the hotel a beautiful retreat in the city, isolated from the traffic on Chapel Street. It's in a neighborhood famous for its shopping, art galleries, and restaurants, but the South Yarra location isn't ideal for tourists planning to explore the heart of the city. The bar and breakfast venue covers the basics, and most won't miss a full restaurant with so many eating options nearby.

4

Art Series – The Olsen

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

This upscale boutique hotel is located in the heart of Australia’s trendy South Yarra neighborhood, which is filled with shops, restaurants and bars. As part of the Art Series Hotel Group, it’s dedicated to showcasing art from an individual artist—the acclaimed Dr. John Olsen. Guests are greeted by gorgeous artwork and sculptures throughout the hotel. There are over 200 elegant suites with modern technology and two on-site restaurants. There are also a spa and a fitness center, but the equipment is very minimal, and there’s a charge for in-room Wi-Fi.

5

Hotel Lindrum Melbourne – MGallery by Sofitel

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

The 59-room Hotel Lindrum Melbourne is an upscale boutique hotel near the Central Business District with a balance of history and modern flair. The hotel features the sleek Felt restaurant, a popular choice among locals, and a cozy bar with a fireplace. Modern rooms are spacious, with stylish bedding and chic furniture, but shower/tub combos are narrow. The hotel's barn also has a pool table, adding to the hotel's relaxed vibe, but there's no pool or fitness center.

Art Series – The Blackman

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

With striking prints by Australian artist Charles Blackman and minimalist decor throughout, the sleekly upscale 209-room Blackman feels more like a downtown art gallery than a high-end hotel. The spacious, up-to-date rooms, all with balconies and designer furnishings, are comfortable and include inspired artwork, but the bathrooms are small. About a 40-minute walk from the Central Business District, or CBD, the hotel has two restaurants -- Depot de Pain, a French-style cafe, and Classico, an Italian style restaurant that also serves as a bar.

7

The Westin Melbourne

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Right in the heart of Melbourne's Central Business District, The Westin Melbourne is a favorite among international business travelers and affluent couples looking for a stay on coveted Collins Street. Its big, comfortable interiors are packed with work by Australian artists, though the furnishings are showing wear. Guest units check a lot of five-star boxes with their bathrooms and multimedia amenities, but the corporate chain's decor lacks inspiration. Many rooms have city views, but noise from Collins Street may diminish the experience. The hotel's restaurant is pricey, while a fireside high tea in the lobby lounge is worth serious consideration.

8

Quay West Suites Melbourne

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Quay West Suites Melbourne combines apartment-style living with the conveniences of a fully-serviced upscale hotel. Its picturesque location right on the river, surrounded by shopping and top-notch restaurants, makes it one of the best options in the downtown area. The all-suite rooms range from big to palatial, and even the smallest has a kitchenette with modern amenities. An indoor pool is big enough for laps and the restaurant has an inviting outdoor terrace. Still, added fees -- even for Wi-Fi -- can get pricey, but those willing to pay usually find themselves returning here for longer stay

9

Melbourne Parkview Hotel

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

The 206-room Melbourne Parkview Hotel is a solid upper-middle-range option south of Melbourne's city center. The hotel overlooks Albert Park, but reaching most sights will require a drive. Room decor is contemporary if chain-like: It's a step above what one might find at a Holiday Inn, and includes with red striped bedding accents, IKEA-esque furniture, and work desks. Modern bathrooms have big walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads. All rooms have swivel flat-screen TVs with laptop hookups that are inset in the entertainment units, as well as free Wi-Fi. Hotel features include a small fitness center with floor-to-ceiling windows and city views; a jetted rooftop plunge pool and Jacuzzi under a domed glass ceiling, a sauna, and laundry facilities -- all adding to its value.

10

Art Series – The Cullen

Prahran, Victoria, Australia

Located in the fashionable Melbourne neighborhood of Prahran, Art Series - The Cullen is a luxury boutique hotel designed and inspired by the art of Australian contemporary grunge painter, Adam Cullen, run by local chain of similarly art-inspired hotels. The bright and airy rooms are all open-plan suites with full kitchenettes, and, like everywhere else in the hotel, are decorated with modern and abstract designs and artwork. A distinct sense of humor runs through the place; for example, the Do Not Disturb signs read, "Back off or I'll Bite," while the reverse proclaims, "Please Clean up my Mess." Modern perks include Smart Cars and playlist-stocked iPods to rent, as well as a well-equipped fitness center, but Wi-Fi and breakfast both come at a fee. Note that some guests complain that the common areas feel more like a trendy gallery than a hotel, which isn't always a good thing.
