Chen Sea Resort is a luxurious, intimate property located on a sandy beach a 20-minute drive from central Duong Dong. Guests here spend the day sunbathing by the pool or on the beach, where waiters come around with cold towels and fresh fruit. Even at sunset, when the popular beach lounge fills up, the vibe is friendly and casual, with bean bags and hammocks spread over the spacious lawn overlooking the sea. All 36 villas are intimate and stylish, and Jacuzzi Villas are the most special: they're housed in gorgeous original houses brought from Quang Nam Province and reassembled on-site. The only other property that has this type of architecture is the Long Beach Resort Phu Quoc, but Chen Sea Villas is much more luxurious. Chen Sea's beautiful infinity pool, outdoor spa, and excellent Italian/Vietnamese restaurant all offer sea views, and the overall vibe is quiet and relaxing.

In an area packed with hotels, the elegant Salinda Resort stands out for its impeccable interior design, beautiful lush grounds, and high-end services (daily turndown service, personalized check-in with cold towels, and pool/beach waiter service). The 121 large rooms all have upscale amenities, great bathrooms, and balconies. There are two excellent restaurants, including one with panoramic sunset views, and a luxe spa offering an array of signature treatments. Salinda is Phu Quoc's best luxury pick, but travelers in search of intimacy above all else will prefer Chen Sea Villas.

The 45-room Daisy Resort is a charming upper-middle-range boutique perched on the side of a hill a five-minute drive from the city center. All of its rooms are housed in lovely thatched bungalows with patios, great outdoor bathrooms with rain showers, and excellent amenities, including free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, and air-conditioning. With sweeping views of the sea and the sunset, the pool is a major highlight at the Daisy Resort. A wonderful breakfast is served daily free of charge at the cute open restaurant, which also offers tasty Vietnamese and international cuisine for lunch and dinner. Daisy Resort doesn't have its own beach, like Chen Sea and Salinda, but it does offer free shuttle service to the beach, night market, and airport (Chen Sea's airport transfer costs a fee). Free yoga and cooking classes during high season add even more appeal.

The sprawling Mango Bay Resort is an excellent option for those in need of some serious R&R. The 44-room boutique property is tucked away in a somewhat remote part of western Phu Quoc, and its ample grounds offer plenty of nooks to unwind, with hammocks tied between trees, loungers scattered throughout, and two beachfront bars with panoramic sunset views. The style is simple yet smart, with a polished rustic-chic design. As gorgeous as it may be, there is more than meets the eye at Mango Bay. The property was built with a strong commitment to sustainability and the environment, and features a comprehensive eco-friendly program that includes practices such as waste and water management and the use of solar energy and the alternative cooling systems. The outcome is a stylish property with a conscience and lots of charm, making it a favorite among young and middle-aged couples and families, mostly from Australia. Like at Daisy Resort, the bathrooms here are a highlight: all but five rooms have beautiful outdoor bathrooms with rain showers, lots of stone and wood accents, and natural toiletries in large ceramic containers.

Built on the side of a hill next to lovely palm-fringed beach, the 28-room Sea Sense Resort feels remote and serene. A mile-long private driveway winding through lush gardens leads to the lobby, which is housed in an open pavilion with soaring wooden ceilings and elegant wooden furniture decorated with carvings. Guests are welcomed with fruit-infused ice water before being whisked in a golf cart to one of the hotel’s bungalow-style rooms, many of which have direct access to the beach. Tropical plants and trees cover every inch of the 10-acre grounds, tumbling down all the way to the beach, which is one of the most intimate and romantic in the area. Pairs of loungers are spread out over a long stretch of sand, offering a level of privacy rarely seen in Phu Quoc. Note that swimming is not allowed here in the summer due to the strong undertow. Daisy Resort and Sea Sense are in the same price range, and while Sea Sense is right on the beach, Daisy Resort still gets the edge due to its many boutiquey touches, like free yoga and cooking classes (both Daisy and Sea Sense offer free bikes).

Tucked away at the end of a back alley running parallel to the beach, Thanh Kieu Beach Resort is quiet and intimate. The focus here is on relaxation, with a semi-unplugged philosophy (rooms lack TVs and phones, but there is free Wi-Fi throughout), and no music anywhere. The hotel is simple but charming, with a lovely open lobby decorated with stylish wooden furniture and brick and wood accents, and beautiful, serene grounds full of plants, flowers, and corn stalks. There isn’t much on-site besides a restaurant, a beach bar, and a couple dozen loungers on the sand (no pool, like the infinity-edge one at Sea Sense), but when we visited guests seemed to find the beach enjoyable enough to spend a few hours per day sunbathing, swimming, and unwinding with a drink at the bar. Most of the guests we saw were middle-aged German and Australian couples, but the hotel is also popular among young Vietnamese travelers in the summer.
