Ocean Maya Royale
Carretera Federal Chetumal, km. 299

The 320-room mid-range Ocean Maya Royale is an all-inclusive adults-only resort located on a private beach, 15 minutes from the center of Playa del Carmen. The resort is quiet and colorful, with plenty of sports and games, as well as ample opportunity for chilling out by the ocean or one of the two pools. The on-site restaurants offer a variety of world cuisines, and reservations are never required at the a la carte dining rooms. Rooms are clean, comfortable, and modern, but lack the rustic, Mexican character and coziness of many neighboring resorts. That said, the Ocean Maya Royale is definitely doing something right, as it gets a great deal of repeat business.

Hilton Playa del Carmen, an All-Inclusive Adult Only Resort
Avenida Constituyentes 2, Centro, Gonzalo Guerrero

This adults-only, luxury all-inclusive property with 507 rooms appeals to both 20- and 30-something couples. A particular draw of the Hilton Playa del Carmen, an All-Inclusive Adult Only Resort is its proximity to the nightlife of downtown Playa del Carmen, especially bustling Fifth Avenue, which the party-oriented appreciate. But the gorgeous stretch of beach and the sophisticated rooms with two-person jetted tubs means romantic-minded couples will be pleased here as well. The range of features is, unsurprisingly, extensive, including seven restaurants and five bars, an Olympic-sized pool, a wedding center, and a spa. The adults-only Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun has a much more secluded beach, but it's farther from downtown.

Iberostar Tucan Hotel
Avda Xaman-Ha, Lote Hotelero, Fraccionamiento Playacar Nro 2

Iberostar Tucan Hotel is a family-friendly all-inclusive in Playacar, a residential and hotel compound in Playa del Carmen. The resort is built around a large and peaceful jungle expanse full of native plants and wildlife, such as howler monkeys, iguanas, and agoutis. Bright and spacious rooms have Mexican touches like stucco walls and Mayan-inspired art, plus flat-screen TVs, minibars, and furnished terraces or balconies. Sun and water lovers will enjoy the lovely white-sand beach and the trio of great pools. By comparison, the next-door, similarly priced Sandos Playacar Beach Resort has more pools and specialty dining options, but feels more sprawling and impersonal.

Iberostar Quetzal Playacar
Av Xaman-Ha. Lote Hotelero No. 2

The 350-room Iberostar Quetzal Playacar is an all-inclusive, family-friendly beach resort located at the southern end of Playa del Carmen, and it shares facilities with the Iberostar Tucan Hotel for added restaurants and common areas. Resort life revolves around the large white-sand beach and the enormous main pool, which meanders through the center of the property with enough space for sun-worshippers and water polo players to peacefully coexist. The resort has its own rainforest, with lush trails and resident wildlife, including monkeys who visit guest room balconies. In addition, there is an adults-only pool, seven eateries, six bars, a kids' club, spa, fitness center, and plenty of water sports. Like most all-inclusive beach resorts in the area, it's a perfectly pleasant and well-equipped place to bliss out for a vacation, but little annoyances include reservation and dress code requirements at some restaurants and a lack of elevators.

Paradisus Playa Del Carmen La Esmeralda
5A Avenida, Corner Calle 112

The luxury, 501-room Paradisus Playa Del Carmen La Esmeralda is one of the best family-friendly, all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen. Its Family Concierge section includes a private pool and lounge, butler service, private beach area, and tons of in-room perks for children. Contemporary rooms have sitting areas, free minibars (restocked daily), free Wi-Fi, and furnished balconies. Many also feature outdoor hot tubs, and some offer swim-up access. Dining and drinking options include everything from a great buffet to Mexican and Asian a la carte restaurants. Couples can be happy here but may want to check rates next door at the adults-only Paradisus Playa Del Carmen La Perla.

Sandos Playacar Beach Resort
Paseo Xaman-Ha, Manzana 1, Lote 1

The Sandos Playacar Beach Resort & Spa is an all-inclusive resort encompassing four separate resort areas, one of which is adults-only. There are 819 rooms in total, all of which are actually suites with furnished balconies or patios. Haciendas have small semi-private pools and whirlpool hot tubs, while most other rooms have jetted bathtubs. The massive resort is located in the gated community of Playacar near the center of Playa del Carmen. It's right on the largest private white-sand beach in the area, making it a good choice for guests who want to a vacation that combines beach time and sightseeing. Because of its large size and four-resorts-in-one set-up, Sandos offers more activity and dining options than most other properties in the area.

Hotel Riu Lupita
Avda. Xaman-Ha, Manzana 20, Lote 1, Condominio Playacar

Hotel Riu Lupita is a mid-range, all-inclusive hotel that's far from the beach and could use a major re-haul in terms of maintenance and policies. Guests have complained about everything from coatis climbing up the balconies and stealing food, to low-quality restaurant food, to paying extra for unreliable Wi-Fi and brand name booze. For vacationers who want to keep costs relatively low and don't mind riding a shuttle 15 minutes to the beach club, this is a solid enough option. Rooms can sleep up to three (with bunk beds) and have liquor dispensers and minibars. Two outdoor swimming pools (plus another one at the beach club), a kids' club, and free bikes keep guests entertained. But it may be worth paying a little more to stay at Riu Playacar All Inclusive, which is right on the beach.

Ocean Riviera Paradise
Carretera Federal Cancun Chetumal, Km 296, Manzana 020, Lote 007-1, Playa Xcalacoco

The four-pearl Ocean Riviera Paradise is massive with 974 rooms, five pools, a water park, 13 meeting rooms, 10 restaurants, 11 bars, rocky beach access, and a bowling alley. The rooms are spacious and done in a sophisticated design with balconies, free minibars, coffeemakers, and trendy bathrooms. Some have swim-up access or terraces with hot tubs. Guests have noted issues with the air-conditioning in rooms and mildew smells. There are separate areas in the hotel for adults and families, but the massive size isn’t for everyone and occasional drawbacks include crowds, bland food, overbooking issues, and time-share pitches. Rates are all-inclusive, but Privilege guests get higher quality booze and food. For something more intimate and service-focused, consider the Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa, a boutique property that has a smooth sandy beach and free breakfast.

Platinum Yucatan Princess All Suites & Spa Resort
Prolongacion 5a Avenida, Mz 20 Lote 006

The Platinum Yucatan Princess is a solid adult-only all-inclusive luxury resort on the Riviera Maya, and stands out for its extensive facilities and activities program. Other features include six restaurants (where reservations are generally not required) and eight bars -- including swim-up bars at two of the 13 pools -- entertainment programs, a fully equipped fitness center, and the Princess Spa. The 472 rooms have balconies or terraces, and multiple swim-out rooms are available. Just know that the food quality and the beach are not the highlights, and some features are found at the neighboring sister resorts, which are a decent walk away. The nearby Valentin Imperial Maya has similar rates and a better beach.

Grand Riviera Princess All Suites Resort & Spa
Prolongacion 5ta Avenida, Mza 2 Lote 6

The 672-room Grand Riviera Princess All Suites Resort and Spa is a large hacienda-inspired resort outside of Playa del Carmen. There are a plethora of amenities shared between the hotel and its sister property Grand Sunset Princess: nine bars, seven restaurants, 12 pools, and a variety of sports  including tennis, scuba lessons, and a fitness center. The resort is meticulously manicured and laid out around a network of pools and outdoor lounge areas. Multiple guests have noted that upgrading to platinum status can significantly cut check-in time and provide access to more desirable rooms. Rooms are modern, and the best have beach views or swim-out pool access. The spa and fitness center are nice, but there's a fee for internet and the buffet restaurants receive mixed reviews. There is no significant difference between the Grand Sunset and Grand Riviera as all features are shared, so book at whichever side has cheaper rates.
