Monte Mar Palace Hotel
Sitio Do Montado

This three-pearl 111-room hotel sits on a picturesque clifftop in Ponta Delgada, a quiet village located in the north of the island. The hotel has away-from-it-all atmosphere that attracts families and mature travelers, with simply decorated rooms and furnished balconies -- many have unforgettable ocean views. All are equipped with air-conditioning and TVs, but Wi-Fi is only available in the lobby and decor is a bit tired. Facilities are family-friendly and include two swimming pools, a spa, fitness center, game room, playground, daily activities, and nightly entertainment. All-inclusive rates are available, and there's a buffet restaurant serving international cuisine, plus a seasonal poolside bar and room service. Travelers preferring a less isolated location might like Hotel Baia Azul, which is within walking distance to a beach and local amenities.

Hotel Talisman
Rua Marques Praia e Monforte 40

The three-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Talisman is a dated, 57-room property in the center of Ponta Delgada. Occupying a historic 17th-century building, there are some lovely traditional elements such as stained glass, ornamental ceilings, and a spiral staircase. Old-fashioned rooms are well-maintained, and outfitted with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and kettles. On-site features include a small, mostly shaded rooftop pool, all-day restaurant serving free breakfasts, plus seafood and Portuguese cuisine, and a small gym and kids' club. Views from the rooftop terrace are lovely. Note that there's no proper spa and some past guests have complained of noise issues. Travelers wanting something more modern might prefer the nearby Hotel Marina Atlantico, which is also closer to the ocean and has a small spa.

Vila Nova Hotel
Rua Joao Francisco Cabral 1 3

Vila Nova Hotel is a three-pearl property, conveniently located near the beach and golfing in the center of Ponta Delgada. Its 102 clean, though simple and dated, rooms feature AC, free Wi-Fi, shower/tub combos, and TVs with cable channels -- most TVs are old tube-style and only some units have mini-fridges and balconies. Drawing mostly couples and some families, guests can expect a good range of basic features like a buffet restaurant, free breakfast, room service, small game room and gym area, heated outdoor pool with drink service, lobby bar with snacks, and free overnight shoeshines. For a better bang-for-your-buck, check out the nearby Caloura Hotel Resort, where you'll also get a sauna, clifftop sea views, and tennis courts.

São Miguel Park Hotel
Rua Manuel Augusto Amaral

The Sao Miguel Park Hotel is a three-pearl hilltop property that's a 10-minute walk from the historic center of Ponta Delgada. The 163 rooms are clean, and many have views of the ocean from furnished balconies. Features include indoor and outdoor pools, plus a health club with a fitness center, a hot tub, and a sauna. A kids' club is handy for families, and the bar hosts karaoke for adult entertainment. A free buffet breakfast is served in the restaurant, which also offers lunch and dinner. The decor and features here are simple and a little bland, and Wi-Fi can be weak in some areas of the hotel. Travelers may want to compare rates at the Hotel Talisman, which has more charm and is located within the city center.

Savoy Calheta Beach
Av. D. Manuel I 3

The Savoy Calheta Beach isn't the only hotel in town on the oceanfront, but it's the only one that's right on Calheta Beach. It also has an outdoor pool, a spa with a small indoor pool, and an outdoor playground. Its upper-middle-range rooms have a contemporary beach decor and there's an annex with family-friendly apartments equipped with kitchenettes. All-inclusive rates cover food and limited beverages at two restaurants and three bars. Note that parking, premium beverages, and use of in-room safes cost extra. For couples without kids, it's worth comparing to the more upscale Saccharum Hotel Resort & Spa, which can have even cheaper rates, though it's not an all-inclusive hotel.

Savoy Saccharum Resort & Spa
Rua da Serra de Agua, 1

The ocean-facing Savoy Saccharum is an excellent four-pearl resort, and a good choice for travelers who prefer to be in a secluded location about a 10-minute walk from Calheta Beach. Housed in a former sugar mill, the hotel features dark, moody, and stylish interiors and 243 exceedingly spacious guest rooms with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Most of the furnished balconies have ocean views. A big draw here is facilities: three outdoor pools (unheated and occasionally cold), a spa with indoor pool and hot tub, several bars, and a la carte and buffet restaurants. Note that it's a 30-minute drive from Funchal. Iti Pestana Grand down the coast is comparable in facilities and is closer to Funchal, but rooms aren't as upscale.

Estalagem Ponta do Sol
Quinta da Rochinha

Estalagem Ponta do Sol is a four-pearl property dramatically perched on top of a cliff overlooking the southern coast of Madeira Island and across from the beach. The 54 rooms are minimally decorated with black and white and come with air-conditioning, mini-fridges, outdoor space, and picture windows with fantastic views. The outdoor infinity pool, stylish restaurant, lobby and pool bars, and panoramic whirlpools are all designed to give guests spectacular views. Other features include a library lounge and game room, bike rental, free shuttle bus, yoga and Qi Gong classes, diving instruction, and wellness spa with hydrotherapy, sauna, and steam room -- all great distractions from the non-activity in the village. Free breakfast and free Wi-Fi are added perks. If this spot is booked, it's worth checking out the comparable Saccharum Hotel Resort & Spa up the coast.

Enotel Baia
Avenida 1º de Maio

This three-and-a-half-pearl, 69-room hotel is located in the peaceful village of Ponta Del Sol on Madeira. It's an ideal base for exploring the island, with a picturesque beachfront location and a quiet atmosphere. Rooms are modern, with a classic twist, and some have private balconies with superb ocean views. However, they lack both Wi-Fi and electric kettles. The hotel has a sleek indoor pool that's great in the winter months, and a fitness center that's free for all guests. A restaurant serves traditional Madeiran cuisine and a generous free breakfast buffet, and all-inclusive rates are available (though food can get repetitive and drink options are limited). Travelers preferring more amenities might like Quinta de Casa Branca instead. It's a quiet boutique hotel that adds an outdoor pool and full-service spa.

Quinta do Furao
Estrada da Quinta do Furao 6

This four-pearl, 45-room upscale hotel has a quiet clifftop location in Santana, a small village on Madeira's northeast coast. It's great for walkers, as it's close to levadas and trails like Pico Ruivo, and it has a relaxed, away-from-it-all atmosphere. Attractive rooms and suites are set within five acres of organic gardens, and the hotel is traditionally decorated with rustic furnishings. There's an indoor/outdoor pool and full-service spa for relaxing, plus a fitness center and games room. The hotel's acclaimed restaurant has a unique cliffside setting with dramatic views of the coastline, and serves gourmet cuisine with garden-sourced ingredients. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are both free. For an alternative that's closer to civilization, Quinta da Casa Branca has a more central location within walking distance to Funchal's bars and restaurant.

Dom Pedro Madeira
Estrada De Sao Roque

Dom Pedro Madeira is a three-pearl, beachfront property on the eastern side of Madeira Island in Machico Bay. Two beaches are within walking distance and the airport is just five minutes away by car. If you don't mind dated features, faint musty smells, and an overall old-fashioned appearance, on-site features like a delicious buffet restaurant (all-inclusive option), two bars, tennis courts, a dive center, game room, and sports excursions make this spot a good value. The 218 room are clean, however, they're outfitted with plain furniture and stark decor. All-inclusive packages are available, and Wi-Fi is free, but only available in the lobby. Couples may prefer the smaller and far more modern Hotel Madeira in Funchal.
