Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort

The dramatic entrance to Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort manages to satiate Caribbean expectations right from the start. A rare view of the sea from the elegant lobby makes an impression during check-in, and guests can enjoy inventive cocktails in the comfortable lounge area. A set of wide stairs leads down to luxury shops, the courtyard, restaurants, an open pool complex, and a stunning beach (where there will most likely be parasailers floating in the sky). As big as the property sounds, the grounds are not overwhelming, and a shuttle is not needed to get around.

The classy setting is relaxed and meant for all ages, though the vibe may appeal more to adults and honeymooners, while The Reserve next door is more family-friendly. A stellar spa, fitness facilities, and evening shows keep guests busy, but the atmosphere is largely laid-back. Multiple restaurants and bars are largely well-reviewed, though some past guests have complained of mediocre buffets. Travelers that upgrade to Royal Service receive butler service – helpful for making dinner reservations – and access to a peaceful pool and beach area, as well as a sophisticated lounge.

Paradisus Palma Real is in an area of Bavaro that is closer to the village of Punta Cana, and therefore closer to the airport –- about a 20-minute taxi drive. There isn’t much to do outside of the resort, so most guests feel content to just stay back and enjoy the amazing beach (which can occasionally be plagued by seaweed) and amenities next door at The Reserve. For excursions, golfers have access to Cocotal Golf Course & Country Club, and shoppers can head to nearby Punta Cana Village.

Paradisus Palma Real’s 554 suites are located in three-story buildings with staircases and elevators. Most guests will find it an easy walk to get to the main areas of the resort; a shuttle is not needed, unlike at other resorts in Punta Cana. They’re all done in a classically elegant style that varies by category, but expect warm neutral tones, wooden furniture, and light walls. The entry-level Paradisus Junior Suites start at 49 square meters (527 square feet) and have furnished outdoor spaces, whirlpool tubs, and separate showers.

Suites have furnished terraces or balconies, CD/DVD players, coffeemakers, free minibars with snacks, sodas, and beer (stocked daily), and lounge areas. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort. Most suites come with mahogany furniture, marble tile floors, and sofa beds; some have spacious kitchenettes, though these are not meant for serious cooking. Bathrooms have both showers and whirlpool tubs, hairdryers, and toiletries.

Royal Service suites, which are adults-only, offer whirlpools and either ocean or garden views. These come with higher-end amenities and access to special areas of the resort, such as a private pool and beach area, and a spacious lounge with some of the best views of the resort.

Other than the breathtaking setting, the Paradisus Palma Real may be best known for its generally charismatic service and quality food and beverage program, particularly for an all-inclusive property. International buffet spreads are offered for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Naos, while a la carte restaurants serve a variety of cuisines for dinner. A la carte eateries have dress codes and include the romantic Passion by Martín Berasategu restaurant, which has a menu designed by a celebrity Michelin-starred chef from Spain. Dinner-only a la carte restaurants include Mediterranean eateries Aqua and Vento; Bana for Japanese fare; Rare for steakhouse eats; and Mizu for teppanyaki-style dishes. Royal Service guests will have access to another option called Palazzo, which has a sunny terrace for lunch. Room service is available 24/7 for a fee.

Pre- and post-dinner cocktails can be enjoyed at bars sprinkled around the resort, including a bar in the courtyard where guests can sit back, listen to the fountain, and look at the stars. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are covered by the all-inclusive rate.

The beautiful white-sand beach is a highlight here, lined with cushioned loungers and daybeds. However, the beach can sometimes have seaweed issues. More sunbeds can be found at the outdoor pools. The main outdoor pool is large and overlooks the ocean, plus is has submerged loungers and a swim-up bar. A private pool is available for Royal Service guests.

Entertainment in the form of music and dance occurs nightly, but it's of a grown-up variety (this is not a spring break crowd). Workshops, sports, and leisure activities for both adults and children are available, including an adventure park with climbing wall and trampolines (located next door at The Reserve), arts and crafts, cooking classes, golf, tennis, and parasailing. A kids’ club is available as well. Guests receive free green fees at Cocotal Golf Course.

Yhi Spa has a number of body and facial treatments in a tranquil open-air garden environment that feels right out of Southeast Asia. The thermal circuit is a favorite. A fitness center is also on-site.

Weddings are often held here, and there are venues for meetings and other events.
