Cabo Azul Resort
Paseo Malecon SN, Lote 11 Fonatur

Sitting on beautiful beachfront grounds, this 326-room upscale resort offers chic and spacious suites and one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas. All units have living rooms and private terraces, plus villas add full kitchens with modern appliances. A beautiful tri-level infinity pool takes centerstage on the scenic grounds, plus there's a kids' pool and an adult-only pool. A peaceful spa offers a myriad of treatments, and there's a well-equipped fitness center. Dining options include an excellent farm-to-table restaurant serving homestyle Mexican fare, plus there's a poolside bar and shop/cafe with Starbucks coffee. A kids' club, lovely chapel, 16-seat movie theater, and a roster of activities round out the features. The main downer? The beach isn't swimmable due to dangerous currents. For something with a swimmable beach, check out the One & Only Palmilla -- but rates are pricier.

The Grand Mayan at Vidanta Los Cabos
San Jose S/N, Campo de Golf Lote 12

The atmosphere at the Grand Mayan is peaceful (aside from pushy timeshare sellers): The massive pool looks out onto a pristine beach, the Brio Spa has soothing decor, and the chic and spacious rooms feature private balconies and bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs and walk-in showers. In the quiet area of San Jose del Cabo (as opposed to party-hearty Cabo San Lucas), the hotel is within walking distance of town and caters toward couples with its sexy open bathrooms and upscale restaurants (although there are some mixed reviews on the food). Drawbacks, however, are fairly significant -- the pool temperature is often chilly, and the beach is riddled with jellyfish.

The Westin Los Cabos Resort Villas & Spa
Carretera Transpeninsular Km 22.5, Baja Sur

Situated among the long stretch of mega-resorts that line the shores between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, The upscale Westin Los Cabos Resort Villas & Spa is a mostly modern property with great ocean views from its 224 rooms. You aren't near much here, so guests tend to dine, drink, and entertain themselves within the hotel's grounds. Lovely pools have beach views and dining ranges from multi-course dinners to buffets, though all-inclusive rates aren't offered. Rooms are spacious and bright, and all feature terraces with sea views. For some (particularly couples), the seclusion, quiet, and stunning setting of this resort is the major draw. Its kids' club and large rooms make it a good choice for families as well. If you'd like something with a little more contemporary style, the JW Marriott Los Cabos has stunning grounds and a quiet vibe along with similar rates. It's worth checking out as well.

Cabo Surf Hotel
Playa Acapulquito Km 28, Bahía Palmilla

This family-owned, upscale boutique hotel in San José del Cabo enjoys gorgeous Pacific Ocean views from its two infinity pools, hot tub, and most of its 36 rooms. The somewhat hidden beach is a highlight here and continues to attract guests and locals for consistent waves; Mike Doyle Surf School (attached) offers quality instruction and rentals including paddleboards and beach chairs. Guests should expect (and will want) to spend money at the seafood restaurant and bar often, but there are more restaurants and a grocery store within a short drive. Also on-site: a spa, fitness center, and gift shop. Families willing to sacrifice the beach location may prefer the two-bedroom, kitchen-equipped suites at Alegranza.

Royal Decameron Los Cabos
Boulevard Malecon San Jose S/N zona hotelera, San Jose Del Cabo, Baja California Sur

The Royal Decameron Los Cabos is a mid-range all-inclusive beachfront resort for travelers looking to party day and night. This lively adults-only property is the most boisterous resort along this stretch of coastline, especially when compared to the calm Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos right next door. You'll find a boozy pool area with swim-up bar, theater, several bars, a nightclub, and decent rooms here, all making this a decent value. Upgrades to the all-inclusive plus plan will score you premium drinks and access to the rooftop pool. They also mean you won't have to bother with reservations at the Royal Decameron's a la carte restaurants. If you're after something a little more sedate, the Cabo Azul Resort and Reflect Krystal Grand Los Cabos are both similarly priced, more stylish alternatives with calmer vibes.

Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort
Av. De Los Pescadores S/N, Col. La Playita

The 500-suite Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort is a luxury adults-only all-inclusive located on a beautiful beach outside of San Jose del Cabo. Manicured grounds are sprawling (expect to walk often) and offer great views of the Sea of Cortez, especially from the two pools (one is exclusive for Preferred Club guests) and two adjoining nine-hole golf courses. Rates are among the highest in the area, but the Unlimited Luxury all-inclusive package covers all buffet and a la carte meals, top-shelf liquors, Wi-Fi, and even tips (though expect to tip on top of room rates). Suites have traditional Mexican decor, playful, romantic touches, and modern amenities such as jetted tubs, Nespresso machines, and terraces -- some are swim-out. The spa, complete with a lovely outdoor hydrotherapy area, is a highlight. Travelers seeking something a bit swankier and more hip should consider The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, though it’s not all-inclusive.

Royal Solaris Los Cabos
Blvd. San José, Campo de Golf

The 400-room, mid-range Royal Solaris is an affordable all-inclusive option on the beach geared toward families. This attractive time-share property (beware of sales pitches) has ample amenities, including four pools, four bars, and four restaurants, two of which are a la carte (though food, overall, is not a highlight). Rooms have traditional furnishings, mini-fridges stocked with free beer and water, and balconies -- though some are tiny. Daily activities keep the masses occupied, and while the beautiful beach is typically not swimmable, it offers tons of sandy space and loungers under thatched umbrellas. Thanks to a kids' and teens' club, nightly entertainment, dance classes, and a water park, families are the norm -- but couples can relax at the spa or adult-only pool. Compare rates with the Barcelo Grand Faros, which has slightly more modern rooms.

Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos
Carretera Transpeninsular Km. 18.4, Lomas del Tule

Like its famous sibling in Cancun, the adult-only Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos feels like a world unto itself. This all-inclusive luxury property offers literally everything you could need for a week of indulgence. The style here is chic and contemporary, and almost every space is done up in bright hues and minimalist decor. It's a contrast to the more opulent style found at Grand Velas Los Cabos, which is Le Blanc's only direct competitor in the region. Rates include gourmet a la carte dining plus premium alcohol, and the food scores high marks from previous guests. The outdoor pool complex is easily one of the region's prettiest, and the spa -- while not quite as nice as the one at Grand Velas -- offers free hydrotherapy use.

Casa del Mar Golf Resort & Spa
Carretera Transpeninsular km 19.5, Cabo Real

Casa del Mar Golf Resort & Spa is a lovely luxury option along The Tourist Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. The boutique hotel is a tranquil alternative to the surrounding mega-resorts and has most of the same great amenities -- relaxing spa, multi-level swimming pool, three a la carte dining options, a modern fitness center, and 24-hour room service. All 50 guest rooms here are suites and come with flat-screen TVs, ocean views, and balconies. Though the white-sand beach is gorgeous, the ocean isn’t always safe for swimming. There's also isn't much in the way of entertainment or kids activities. Those looking to be closer to a more swimmable beach might consider Casa Dorado for similar amenities at around the same price.

Alegranza
Calle Paseo Las Misiones 927, Colonia Club de Golf Fonatur

Far removed from the party atmosphere of Cabos San Lucas, this upscale property is comprised of 95 residences on beautifully landscaped grounds that include pools, putting greens, fire pits, a fitness center, tennis court, and restaurant. Units are spacious, with large living rooms, full kitchens, and private yards or patios. Spanish pop star Enrique Iglesias is part-owner of this quiet and well-kept property, mostly frequented by couples and families on long vacations. It is a 15-minute hike from the beach, which has rougher waves than the southern shores. Families hoping to be near calmer waters may consider Villa la Estancia, which also offers large rooms and is right on tranquil Medano Beach.
