Maya Sanur Resort and Spa
Jl. Danau Tamblingan

The Maya Sanur Resort & Spa is a 103-room boutique hotel that's one of the most chic options in town. From its environmentally friendly ethos to its eye-catching art and contemporary style, this luxury hotel is refined but light-hearted. Rooms are tricked out with everything from free Wi-Fi and luxe soaking tubs to private infinity pools and espresso machines in the suites. There are three dining options, including an excellent Japanese restaurant, and the gorgeous spa makes unwinding a delight. Happy hours at Tree Bar, overlooking the beach, are a popular go-to spot for travelers from across Sanur, and there are multiple pools. If you prefer a more traditional take on luxury, it's worth considering the Fairmont Sanur down the coast instead, though rates there will be higher.

Emerald Villas
Jalan Karangsari no 5, Sanur,Bali, Indonesia

The three-pearl Emerald Villas -- at the southern end of Sanur -- is a fine option for guests wanting a private tropical getaway without the luxury price tag. There are 31 units here, though common amenities are kept to a bare minimum. That's because each of the villas, which range from one- to four-bedroom configurations, include private pools, full kitchens, and other homey comforts. Despite the hotel's luxury claims, the atmosphere is casual and the Balinese-influenced style is showing some wear. There is a restaurant and bar on-site, but that's about it for features. Travelers who'd like a more refined take on Balinese style, but are willing to sacrifice private pools, might consider Klumpu Bali Resort instead. But keep in mind that rates there will be higher.

Besakih Beach Hotel
Jln. Danau Tamblingan No 45, Po Box 3306

This quiet, garden-filled property is a decent two-pearl option for travelers who only need the basics for a beachfront stay. It's not exactly a new hotel, though the 79 rooms feature air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and basic minibars. However, they are tired and worn, and some features are outdated. The hotel has two dining areas and bars, and the two pools are definitely a highlight. They're immaculately kept and the one by the beach has great views out to sea. It was filled with relaxing guests during our visit. There's low-key entertainment on select nights of the week, plus seating exclusively for hotel guests on the beach. If you don't mind losing direct beach access, you'll get far more style and substance for your money at Oasis Lagoon Sanur.

Prama Sanur Beach Bali
Jl Cemara Sanur

The 428-room Prama Sanur Beach Bali is a family-friendly, upper-middle-range resort located on one of the best beaches in Bali and within walking distance of dozens of restaurants and shops. Rooms are spacious and feature balconies, minibars, and electric kettles, but range from stylish and contemporary to dated and worn. High-end villas have full kitchens and big gardens with private pools. Although the on-site beach is the definite highlight here, the hotel also features two large pools -- including one with slides for children -- an excellent spa, and four restaurants, two of which have panoramic beach views. The Prama Sanur offers a relaxing beachfront vacation without the luxury price tag, but couples seeking a more intimate property may prefer the Kamuela Sanur.

Prime Plaza Hotel Sanur - Bali
Jl. Hang Tuah 46

Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel is a three-and-a-half-pearl property that's less than a 10-minute walk from the beach. This modern hotel has a lot to like, including a lovely pool, a fantastic gym, and a spa. With 329 rooms, it's one of the largest properties in Sanur, and the look throughout is pleasantly modern. Standard in-room features include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi, though the latter can be spotty. There are restaurants serving Indonesian and Western fare, plus a cafe, and the breakfast buffet is extensive (for a fee). While free shuttles run into town, the hotel isn't within walking distance of Sanur's touristy restaurants and shops. For something in the heart of the action, check out The Oasis Lagoon Sanur instead, though it lacks the wealth of on-site features.

Respati Beach Hotel
Jl. Danau Tamblingan No.33

Sanur has its share of simple beachfront hotels, but Respati Beach is one of its nicer mid-range options. Its 44 fresh, impeccably clean rooms -- with flat-screen TVs and powerful air-conditioning -- are set on tranquil, manicured grounds right next to the beach. There's a small pool, a breezy spa cabana, and plenty of chairs on the sand. The hotel's location, right in the middle of laid-back Sanur's restaurant-and-cafe scene, is also a bonus. Still, there are a few flaws to keep in mind: The Wi-Fi wasn't great during our visit, and beds are rock hard. Rates can be a steal here, though Besakih Beach Hotel three lots down is similarly priced and has a better beachfront pool. The tradeoff? Rooms there are tired.

Gazebo Beach Hotel
JI. Danau Tamblingan 35, PO Box 3134

This 60-room budget option has a prime location, wedged between northern Jalan Danau Tamblingan and the beach, though the star of the show is undoubtedly the hotel's gardens. These literally burst with a riot of plants, trees, and flowers that make the grounds feel like a tropical escape. That helps features like the hotel's two pools look especially appealing, and adds to the hotel's quiet, private vibe. However, the rooms -- while air-conditioned and featuring free Wi-Fi -- have a classic Balinese style that's quite dated. During our 2017 visit, some were being renovated and looked more cheerful. There are two restaurants serving basic local and international fare, and drinks are available. For something that's a little more fresh, try Respati Beach Hotel, which is right next door.

Puri Mesari Hotel & Suites
Jalan Mertasari 66, Sanur Kauh

If clean digs and a quiet, family-run environment are what you're seeking, then budget-friendly Puri Mesari could be for you. This two-and-a-half-pearl property has just 26 units, and is removed from the buzz of central Sanur's more touristy areas. However, the beach is less than a 10-minute walk from the property. The rooms and villas have a basic look, though some are more modern than others, and all include air-conditioning, minibars, and en-suite bathrooms (some of which are outdoors). There's a free on-call shuttle to the beach and central Sanur, and the hotel has a nice pool and a simple poolside restaurant serving all meals. An a la carte breakfast is included in rates. For something just a bit more central and modern, it's worth considering the Taksu Sanur instead.

Parigata Villas Resort
Jl. Duyung No. 99, Semawang, Semawang

For an all-villa property with a decidedly more humble bent, Parigata Villas is a solid option that's just up the road from the beach. This mid-range property is simple and straightforward, with classic Balinese style that can look a bit faded in spots. Each of the 18 villas is privately walled and includes its own pool and outdoor space, but the one-bedroom configurations mean that they're not suited for families. For many guests here, that's a perk. Otherwise, features are limited, as they are at most villa properties in Sanur. There is a lovely communal pool for those who want to socialize, and a simple restaurant serving food all day. Looking for villas with more premium appeal? Check out Mahagiri Villas, though that property is farther from the beach.

Kejora Suites
Jln. Danau Tamblingan No 25

An intimate boutique property with style to spare, Kejora Suites is one of Sanur's most attractive four-pearl hotels. The 26 rooms are spacious and quiet, and each comes with its own Wi-Fi router, excellent pillow-top beds, gorgeous bathrooms, and private terraces. There's a stunning courtyard pool that's ringed by sun-seeking guests all day long, and dining takes place at The Glass Door, one of Sanur's most popular restaurants. It's less than a five-minute walk to the hotel's private beach, and facilities like a spa and full-service beach club are available at Segara Village, the sister property that's a 10-minute walk away. Travelers wanting their resort amenities on site might prefer that property, though it's slightly less chic.
