Grand Hyatt Tokyo

Minato, Hamamatsucho, Tokyo Prefecture, Kanto, Japan

Towering over the massive business and shopping development of Roppongi Hills, the five-pearl Grand Hyatt Tokyo features seven different restaurants, three bars, a beauty salon, an indoor pool, and a massive spa on-site. Rooms -- large by any standard -- are enormous for Tokyo. All have Frette linens on the beds, blackout blinds on the windows, tea sets in the stocked minibars, and bathrooms with open rainfall showers and ofuro-style soaking tubs.

The Tokyo Station Hotel

Chiyoda, Marunouchi, Tokyo Prefecture, Kanto, Japan

In a city that reinvented itself as a futuristic metropolis studded with skyscrapers, The Tokyo Station Hotel stands as a rare glimpse into the city's pre-war architectural past. Today, the luxury hotel combines period ambience with modern luxury, and the convenience of a busy metro station in the heart of Tokyo. There are multiple dining options, including a stunning breakfast lounge that's reserved only for hotel guests (for an extra fee), and the hotel is surprisingly insulated from the chaos surrounding it. While many of the elegant rooms look toward the Imperial Palace, though, others have windows looking into the station itself.

Hotel New Otani Tokyo The Main

Chiyoda, Tokyo Prefecture, Kanto, Japan

The Hotel New Otani Tokyo Executive House ZEN & The Main are part of the New Otani luxury hotel complex, which sits in a 400-year-old Japanese garden. There are 643 rooms between the two concepts, and while they both offer spacious and stylish accommodations -- many with great views of the surrounding garden -- the properties have very different personalities. The Executive House is premium and edgy, with an ultra-modern feel, while The Main is bright and reserved, with a more traditional vibe. The property has multiple dining options (including a rotating restaurant on the 17th floor), a business center, and free parking. Three subway stations and the Akasaka Palace and State Guest House are in walking distance of its location.

4

Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba

Minato, Tokyo Prefecture, Kanto, Japan

The largest hotel on Odaiba island, the upscale Grand Pacific Le Daiba is surrounded by shopping malls near the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center. With 30 floors, its view of the city skyline across Tokyo Bay is one of its best features. A top-floor bar and restaurant take advantage of the backdrop, with several other on-site eateries serving Asian and Western cuisines. The 884 rooms have a contemporary decor with traditional European influences and marble bathrooms.

5

Shinjuku Granbell Hotel

Shinjuku, Nishishinjuku, Tokyo Prefecture, Kanto, Japan

Shinjuku Granbell Hotel is a large upscale property in the heart of the vibrant Kabuki-cho area. The vibe is contemporary and hip, with designer interiors, murals and artwork, and a trendy rooftop bar. The 380 rooms and suites feature luxurious bathrooms, and come with espresso machines, iPod docks, kitchenettes, and outdoor showers, but lower-priced rooms can be cramped. On-site features include a restaurant, cafe, bar, art gallery, and free Wi-Fi throughout, but there's no pool, spa, or fitness center.

RIHGA Royal Hotel Tokyo

Shinjuku, Tokyo Prefecture, Kanto, Japan

The 126-room Rihga Royal Hotel Tokyo is surrounded by the green space of Okuma Garden, next to Waseda University. The rooms are large (especially for Tokyo) and, like the rest of the hotel, are decorated in a classic European style. In addition to a beautiful tea lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows and the pub-like, dimly lit Cellar Bar, the hotel also has three restaurants: one Western, one Cantonese, and one traditional Japanese.

7

Hilton Tokyo Odaiba

Minato, Tokyo Prefecture, Kanto, Japan

Located on Odaiba Island, Hilton Tokyo Odaiba is an upscale chain hotel with an abundance of on-site amenities. The 453 rooms are spacious and have seating areas and balconies, some overlooking Tokyo Bay, and suites are available with extra perks like outdoor whirlpools. The property has several restaurants offering a variety of cuisines as well as an ocean liner-themed bar. There’s a spa with an indoor pool and rooftop whirlpool, but fees here add up and include a charge for pool access.

8

Park Hotel Tokyo

Minato, Tokyo Prefecture, Kanto, Japan

Occupying the top 10 floors of the Shiodome Media Tower, the upscale Park Hotel Tokyo has a central downtown location. The surrounding futuristic neighborhood is a convenient choice near the Tsukiji Fish Market and Shiodome Station. The wide variety of rooms are a mixed bag, from small and slightly worn Standard Rooms to Artist Rooms -- part of Park Hotel Tokyo's "Artist in Hotel" project -- designed by local artists. Unlike many other upscale hotels in Tokyo skyscrapers, there's no pool or extensive fitness center, but there is a full-service spa with Swedish and Ayurvedic therapies, as well as a 25th-floor cocktail bar, a contemporary French bistro, and a Japanese Kaiseki-style restaurant with a vast sake menu.
